“Of course who doesn’t,” she said cockily hugging him tighter. Looking up Kalani smiled. “I mean I am…the…bomb…Jarred,” she said slowly looking past him suddenly at the wall of the tent, “you did tell the shuttle pilot we didn’t need a pick up for two more days right?” Kalani had no idea what was going on but felt her heart rate increase. The light from the fire outside the tent clearly showed at least one large figure moving around them. The following thumps and crashes indicated things in the camp were being turned over and that there were more than one of mysterious figures. Strange laughing grunts began to echo in the night.

“What is that…” he said looking out as he heard the sound. It wasn’t from anything he could identify. He looked over at Lani and felt a desire to shield her begin to sink in, he didn’t know if they were at risk but he knew he couldn’t let anything hurt her.

“Jarred,” she repeated his name with a hint of nervous fear or maybe anger laced it. The planet was listed as uninhabited. The only people on the surface was supposed to be her and Jarred. “What the hell is going,” she started to say as she sat up but instantly was silenced as the fabric smothered them as the tent collapsed. Kalani rarely panicked but right now her fight or flight sense kicked into gear. Not caring that he was under her, Kalani began to claw at the material trying to find a way out. This caused the material to begin to wad up around them like a vice.

“Jarred. Jarred I can’t get out,” she said struggling as hard as she could not carrying who might hear her but only wanting to be free from the nylon fabric engulfing her.

“Stop love… stop.” he said softly as he got her to calm her down, he wasn’t sure what the nose was either but this was starting to feel like a Chinese finger trap. “We can get out if you just…” he said pausing as he put his arm over her, letting him find the best way to let her out without the fabric squeezing.

“Me,” she sqwaked with pure indignation. “Effa you…hey watch your hands,” Kalani said still struggling as she felt Jarred’s arm encircle her waist. “You are just…making this…more…don’t move. I have an idea,” she grunted throwing herself to the side. The end result was not as she planned. The tightening fabric, due to her struggling, caused her to pull Jarred over on top of her when she flung her body to the right. It did not allow her to move side by side to his body.

“Great. Great,” she huffed looking up at Jarred finding his nose almost touching hers. “You know you are making his exponentially more difficult don’t you?” Kalani tone indicated she was not finding this funny.

Jarred couldn’t help but smirk while on top, looking down at her, pressed hard he smirked. “Isn’t this how we started the night?” he said.

“Didn’t you promise me the night would get better,” she said dryly. Looking at Jarred, however, Kalani could not help but start to laugh. The romantic cuddling they were in moments ago had resulted in a straight jacket sleeping bag situation. If he wasn’t there Kalani might be in the throes of a panic attack but just being with him seemed to calm her. Yes, at first she might have been annoyed with the turn of events yet somehow she was finding the humor in the situation at this point. “But just as you promised my first time was memorable,” Kalani continued. “I mean who could beat a secluded rainfall. Jarred Nikkolos Alindor that’s who,” she said in an upbeat tone. While he did not get them into this mess of being tied up in a sleeping bag, Jarred did create a memory Kalani would never forget or wish to change.

“You, my sexy handyman, have now single-handedly set the bar so high I am not sure anyone can reach this standard of romantic evenings even with a ladder. You might be stuck with me forever now. Hope you were serious about loving me.” Kalani threw it out as a joke only a small part of it was her way of confessing how much she was falling in love with him.

Not wanting to be too sappy she changed the topic quickly. “I am however a bit perplexed at how you are going to get us out of this.” Kalani turned her head to the side taking in the situation and what tools were available to them. “I have tried everything but I think we are stuck. I could try to wiggle out from under you, if I was so inclined, and we could roll towards the backpacks. Maybe find some scissors or a knife to cut us out,” she suggested turning her head back to look up at him.

He leaned in giving her a kiss before moving back to find the zipper that was up the side. “Why didn’t you try this first?” he said, he was tightly pressed but could still slide the zipper down, giving a little wiggle room as he did.

Getting free he looked down at her, still on top as the covers loosened. “I mean really, sleeping bag + zipper… no brainier. You already showed you can use one zipper tonight, was it so good you forgot how to use it after?”

Kalani stopped struggling at this point and looked up at him. “You know I did not live like a cloistered nun right. I did learn a few things over the years,” Kalani put her hand over Jarred’s on the zipper. “Wanna see?” Her tone was teasing. She bit her lip, moving her hand off his to prop herself up on her elbows. “I think you should hold me,” she suggested tossing her hair back over her shoulders with a shake of her head.

Jarred leaned back, letting the night fade into a fuel of pleasure and bliss.

As his hands encircled her waist, Kalani used the space Jarred had created by unzipping the sleeping bag to roll them over again. Looig down at him she kissed him softly on the lips before speaking. “Since you showed me a few things tonight how about I show you what I am good at?” Kalani did not give him time to answer as her lips found him. There was no denying she was falling head over heels for this man. It was easy to do. Jarred was easy to love and easier to please. He had few requirements and always seemed eager to spend time with her. Kissing him came naturally. Keeping a thought in her head as she did it was much harder. A soft moan escaping his lips always told Kalani he was enjoying it as much as her. Time was in limbo during these moments. It seemed to slow down to mere seconds until Kalani looked at a clock and saw minutes had passed. Breaking the kiss she laid her head on his chest and listened to his heart racing. The sounds that had startled her were long forgotten as she inhaled the fresh air and let out a long contented sigh. “Tell me about your favourite childhood memory,” she asked Jarred quietly snuggling against his body. Kalani let out a long yawn and closed her eyes. She was so tired but had no desire to let the night ever end. Kalani needed a moment to get her second wind.

Jarred began, it was simple tale that went on. He was letting himself be silly and endearing as he spoke to her.

No longer hearing Jarred’s voice, Kalani opened her eyes and immediately squinted them shut again. The light was so bright in the tent. It was as if Jarred had turned on every solar panel and lantern they owned. Groaning she put a hand up to shield her eyes. “Jarred turn the light off unless you are making coffee,” she moaned waiting for his reply. “Jarre........ed,” she groaned out shaking him. “Max and I share the same love of darkness in the morning and you are killing me here.”

Jarred rustled, looking up he had his eyes blink as he tried to adjust. “Light?” he said as he looked around, there was tries, sky, dirt all around them. He wasn’t clicking at first as he sat upright. “Didn’t… didn’t we have a tent?” he said as his memory come back. “Kalani!” he said as he realized what was going on. From their campsite it was destroyed, clothes and dirty everywhere, tent ripped.

Alindor, CE

“What are you talking about,” Kalani said sitting up sleepily and stretching. As she opened her eyes and processed his words she immediately grabbed the sleeping bag and tucked it up under her arms. “Jarred…where’s the tent,” she said looking around wildly. Seeing the state of the camp around them, Kalani rolled to the side grabbing his discarded t-shirt from last night. “Oh my god. Do you see those slash marks,” she turned her head addressing him and nodding to the tent balled up in a corner of their once pristine campsite. “I mean it would have to be like 10-inch claws,” she announced in a stunned but curious tone. Once her top was covered she crawled out from beside him and found her boots. “You stay here and I’ll check it out. There has to be some sort of tracks or prints,” Kalani’s voice trailed off.

“I’m not letting you go wander out with a creature that has 10 inch claw marks!” he said as he found some nearby pants putting them on. “I have tracked plenty of animals and there isn’t anything here to protect…” he said as he looked around, the place was utterly devastated it seemed. He couldn’t see anything at all left for them to even be able to use.

“Yes but you are an engineer who likes to do…engineering…ish…things,” she said slowly as she tied off her boot. Jarred had said he was outdoorsy and had experience with being rugged. So far he had proved he was quite skilled with the engineering part and those hours at the gym had paid off well last night but this was different. “It’s just that I need you to keep up,” she said almost in an apologetic tone.

“Oh I am so going to have to discipline you later for that.” he said with a playful smirk. “I actually have lot of experience, combat, tracking… I can even make a mean cup of french vanilla cappuccino but you keep making quips like that and see if I let you lick the milky forth goodness.”

“We are going to go together, and I am not taking no for an answer.” he said once more, knowing she would have fought him on that.

As her gaze drifted up she instantly tuned Jarred out and focused on the object in the foreground. It was tall, furry, bipedal and rather light on its feet for the large stride of its gait. Not ignoring Jarred’s words but not paying attention to him either she began to move quickly towards the creature vanishing through the tropical foliage surround their once pristine camp. Kalani did not worry about Jarred as she took off into the woods. He was a big boy. If he had the skills he would be able to keep up. If not she would find him back at camp later brewing coffee and setting up the washline.

Jarred followed suit, tailing behind her. He hadn’t glanced what she had yet with his back to the creature but he trusted her instincts enough to follow her. He knew well enough to stay quiet as she tracked, only catching a glimpse as they got further of their prey.

Fifteen minutes into her foray into the ferns, Kalani stopped dead in her tracks. The creature that had taken her to a spot about a mile away from the game. Settled amongst the trees in a small clearing were several houses of sorts. The houses had the appearance of mud huts with a thatched roof. A few had a fire outside the door. There were at least ten adult forms of the creature milling about doing what appeared to be jobs in the camp. What surprised Kalani most was not what appeared to be a pre-civilized humanoid colony where none was supposed to belong but what they had brought back to their home.

“Jarred is that my bra,” she asked turning to look back at him and then focusing back on the camp. There was no denying it. One of the “treasures” the humanoid had brought back was now in the hands of the smaller juveniles who were attempting to sling small objects from it.

“I like it better on you… actually maybe I don’t…” he said as he continued to watch, letting his eyes briefly wander down to her. Smirking he washed the thought from his mind, their night had been passion filled and it was hard to focus. He knew this was important, and wanted to make sure he gave it his all for her sake.

“And is that your....portable generator,” Kalani pointed through the leaves.

Ensign Kalani Kane science

“Wait… yes. They… they can’t have that, if they activate it wrong they may hurt themselves.” Jarred said, his concern evident as he watched. It wasn’t designed to be fragile but any sharp hits from them it might cause major problems.
