As she walked in, Elizabeth smiled widely and ran across the room jumping up on the couch. “It looks like home Nana only I can’t see the lights from the city.” After pressing her face to the window, she looked back at Jarred. “Can we take a drive around the ship? PaPa used to take Nana and me all around Tycho on Sunday afternoons. We would get ice cream and sometimes go to the park. Can we do that Daddy?”

“A drive… well… sure. We can’t drive around the ship but we can always go to the holodeck and drive… well anywhere really. You name a location and we can go for a spin, I might even go go-kart racing with you see what you can do.” he said with a small wink at Elizabeth.

“You have a go-cart track on the ship. No way,” Lizzie said jumping up and down with excitement. “I love go-carts. My feet don’t reach the pedals but PaPa has brough pillows before. Do you have pillows I can use?”

“Sure, we can even make the cart perfectly sized for you if you want. Custom sized just for you little one.” Jarred said with a big smile, he would enjoy programming the holodeck for her. He assumed his parents didn’t often get to take her

“Elizabeth, no jumping on the furniture please,” Samantha said softly. This garnered a groan as she jumped up once more to land on her bottom. Using the cushions like a trampoline to propel her up again, Elizabeth was on her feet again looking around.

“I think she likes your quarters,” Samantha whispered to her son. She was thrilled that Elizabeth seemed to be happy with Jarred’s home. Samantha was just happy that it was this clean. She debated on how much of that was due to Kalani living there and cleaning up or her son wanting to impress Kalani so he cleaned up.

“Do you have a dog?” Her tone was super excited and Elizabeth dropped to her knees slapping her legs and calling out ‘here puppy puppy’.

“That is Ralph’s bed… Ralph is Kalani’s pet fox, when she comes he often comes too and we like to give him a place to stay. In fact that’s why Kalani left, she will be here soon to let you meet Ralph and maybe a few of her other animals. Until then I do have a suprise for you little one. Would you like to see your room?” he asked her as he offered his hand to his daughter, pointing his head at the door across the living space.

“Yes,” she said jumping up and looking around the room. There were several doors and she had no idea which one was going to be hers.

Family quarters had a bit of more room, his room had his own bathroom, then there was a bathroom for guests, living space, office area, and dining area as well as the second bedroom. It was a perk of having Elizabeth that he always had the family quarters for just in case she ever came to visit. Now that she was living with him, he was very thrilled he had a chance to finally put her room to good use.

“I hope you like the room, I spent a lot time making it perfect. Last time we talked you told me all your favorite colors and activities, I hope I did well in making this the perfect room sweetie.” he said as he waited for her to open the door first.

Elizabeth palmed the door open and slowly stuck her head in as if she were sneaking into the room. Looking to the left and then right she slowly entered the room. “You made it pink,” she said grinning wider than she had since she arrived. “It is the same color as my bedroom back home. When wake up I won’t know where I am,” she let out a deep kid giggle. “I love it, Daddy.” Elizabeth ran over wrapping her arms around Jarred’s middle before running over to the shelves lining the walls. “I love the soccer balls and you have all my trophies. I love that my bed is under the window so I can look out and see the stars at night and that you have all my toys” she rambled until she stopped. “How did you get all of my stuff?” Elizabeth looked around and began to open some doors to the various dressers and closets. Her face fell a little seeing so many of her clothes already in the closets.

“Remember we talked about packing up your stuff and sending it to Daddy so that he had everything you needed when you came to live with him,” Samantha said.

“Yes but what will be left in my room back home,” Elizabeth asked sitting on the bed. “I wanna live with daddy but what will I have when I come home to see you?”

Jonathan came up behind Jarred as he placed a hand on his shoulder, just briefly before moving aside. It was hard in many ways to try and find his rhythm with Jarred, they seemed to have been in conflict since he was born. Still, Jonathan loved Jarred, even if Jarred didn’t feel that was true.

The slightly quiet moment was soon broken not by adult conversations but loud yips. “Ralphie,” Elizabeth squealed running out of the bedroom pushing past her PaPa and Daddy. The small fox came barreling into the room running immediately to the couch and looking around. It only took him a second to notice someone new in the room and this person was just the right size. In fact, she appeared to be the perfect size. Ralph walked up to her and sniffed twice then immediately dropped his head and stuck his butt in the air wagging his tail.

Kalani walked up to Jarred and linked an arm around his waist. “So how is it going,” she whispered into Jarred’s ear.

“So far so good, I think she really likes the room, and really likes Ralph” Jarred said as he kissed her cheek.

“Daddy why is your dog so small,” Elizabeth asked and then was sent into a fit of giggles as Ralph began to jump up and nip at her ready to play. Ralph had learned how hard to bite these two-legged animals. When you bit it had to be just enough to cause them to laugh but not hard enough to make them say words loudly.

“Well Ralph is a fennec fox. Kalani rescued him, and takes care of him now. He is very sweet but very small, they do not get to be very large so this is about as big as he will get sweetie.” Jarred tried to explain, wanting to keep it simple for his daughter.

“He will fit into my doll clothes,” she said excitedly clapping her hands. “I can dress him up in my soccer uniform. You know the one that is supposed to be for my Federation Girl doll that you bought me last Christmas ‘cept it only has two shoes.” At that moment Elizabeth and Ralph both turned to face Jarred. Elizabeth clearly waiting for Jarred to solve the problem through Cosmozon and Ralph looking for someone to save him.

“He could little one, though he might fight you.” he said as he picked up Ralph and gave him some small scratches behind his head.

“Yes, but you could hold him down and I could shove his feet in the shoes. I would be so fast and he would love it,” Elizabeth clasped her hands together as if praying as she looked at Jarred almost dancing from foot to foot. “I have always wanted one of those fancy dogs like Maris Witlon and Bim Hardashian has.”

Ralph cocked his head and looked up at Jarred as if he was waiting for his BHF or best human friend to fix this situation. Before Jarred could speak or Ralph protest such an indignity, Kalani moved in. “You know that might be something we do tomorrow. Ralph and I would love to try it but there might be a chance his feet are too small.”

Elizabeth’s face fell some indicating her disappointment with the answer. This generated a resigned sigh out of Ralph who squirmed and wiggled in Jarred’s arms trying to get out of the belly up position. This small version of Kalani smelled like pizza and smiled a lot. The pizza reminded him of Jarred and the smiling that of his mommy so Ralph was not going make her feel bad. For some reason, this short version of a human seemed to make Kalani and Jarred happy so Ralph would do his part. Leaning forward he licked Elizabeth’s nose eliciting a bout of giggles. “I love your doggie daddy,” she said looking up at Jarred with a huge smile.

“I hate to do this but we should probably get something to eat soon. It is about 7 and she hasn’t eaten since lunch. She also got up this morning early and it was a very busy day,” Samantha said softly to her son.

Elizabeth Alindor

“Sure, I would love that I even got us some dishes planned for the replicator. If everyone just wants to get ready I can get the food to us.” Jarred said as he looked at his parents then to Kalani.

“I am so hungry,” Elizabeth said happily jumping into her seat. Secretly she knew it would be pizza. She had had pizza for the last three days as they bounced from the shuttle to shuttle and she got to order the kids meals. Elizabeth knew her Daddy would be serving pizza. Once a month for the last six months her Daddy and she had date night. They would each eat pizza and watch a show together talking about all the things they would do when she got here. That surely had to mean there would be pizza for dinner.

Time passed as they all gathered, the table set showed four separate dishes. “So I wanted to give a little bit of everything, we have some Salisbury steak like dad always loved,”

“Daddy I don’t like that,” Elizabeth said in a soft tone tugging on his sleeve.

Jarred looked down, but said nothing. He couldn’t believe she didn’t like this but he was going to move on.

” pomegranate and chicken Cesar salad mom used to make”

“Daddy....I don’t like that either,” Elizabeth looked up at him as Jarred continued to describe the foods being served.

“I… okay baby.” he said as he kept going.

”, some jambalaya I always loved, “

“Daddy this is all yuck eeeee,” she slouched in her seat.

“Really love… I…” Jarred eyed her and sifted his mouth as he thought then looked over at the last dish.

“and … what do you call this again love?” he asked looking at Kalani. Her dish looked like a very odd sandwich, with spam and god knows what. She often raved about it but he never willingly ate any of it.

“It’s Spam Musubi,” Kalani said rolling her eyes and sighing.

“It’s uhh interesting,” Samantha said trying to be polite. “Whats exactly in…it?”

“It is a thick slice of Spam browned, sometimes in a teriyaki sauce. It’s served on a brick of rice and wrapped in a sheet of Nori or seaweed. There are a lot of different versions, but all basically follow this formula and it is magic along with the title best dish on Hawaii ever,” Kalani boasted proudly. “Trust me you will love it,” Kalani replied cutting it into slices. Normally one would eat all of it since it was basically the size of a sandwich but tonight it was more of a buffet so that everyone could share everyone else’s favorite dinner.

“Daddy I don’t like this,” Elizabeth turned up her nose as Jarred cut a slice of Salisbury steak and placed it on her plate. “Nana knows. I don’t wanna eat this,” she moaned slouching down further so that her nose was at the level of the table.

Elizabeth Alindor

“But little one, you surely have had this with them all. These are Nana and Papa’s favorites. How have you not ever liked any of this sweetie?” Jarred asked as he looked at his mom and dad.

“Uh uh,” she shook her head still slouched enough that she was eye level with the table. “PaPa didn’t make me eat the ucky stuff. PaPa was a good cook.”

“Well, it’s easier to just give chicken nuggets on the side.” Jonathan said as he looked at Jarred but not at all as if he was angry.

“It’s not that she is picky honey,” Samantha added poking at the spam think on her plate wishing for some version of allergy that could puff her up and give her a polite excuse to act like her granddaughter. “She just is very…opinionated at times on what she liked to eat.”

“You would never give me nuggets, I was forced to have whatever you made… none of it good.” Jarred said as he looked at his parents.

“Jarred stop. You had choices. There was always extra vegetables if you didn’t like the sides. We never said you couldn’t eat the Brussel sprouts if you didn’t like the liver and onions. Stop being so dramatic,” Samantha said moving the bites of Spam around on her plate and maybe hiding a few under the lettuce from her salad.

“Dramatic? I had an allergic reaction at four and you tried to tell the doctor it was cause I needed to eat more… you went to medical school you know that isn’t true. We still never figured out what spice you tried to poison me with!” Jarred said, but he clearly was angry at his mom as it seemed far more in jest.

“Well, sometimes we get to spoil her… it’s a perk of being the granddad.” Jon said as he looked at his granddaughter then the rest on the people at the table. “We sometimes have to just make some changes as we got older.”

“Yes, and change is good and I am getting older and I get to make new changes like coming here to live with Daddy so I make the change not to eat.....this” Elizabeth added poking at the rest of the food Jarred was piling on her plate.

“Oh… so well… I would like you little one to try some of everything at least baby okay? Just a little honey.” Jarred said as he took her hand and kissed it playfully.

“Yabbit PaPa says you have to stick to his combictions. That means you do what you say you do are going to do. That means I would like to say no thank you,” she beamed proudly at her grandparents. The look was not one of defiance but more of someone seeking praise. Jarred had sent her to the best schools since she was 2 years old. Playgroups, sports, music classes, art classes, dance classes: Anything Elizabeth expressed interest in Jarred allowed her to explore. That and having been raised with highly educated grandparents, Aunts and Uncles had exposed Elizabeth to a lot of concepts. The other half was that while the Alindor’s spoiled Elizabeth far more than any of kids, they did not allow her to ever forget her manners. The fact she had remembered to say no thank you made Elizabeth beam.

“Oh, well how about we play a game Papa used to? It’s called eat what I tell you to eat if you want dessert.” he said as he gave his little girl a side glare.

Elizabeth sat up straight from her slouch shocked that Jarred would say something like that to her. It was not that he said something any normal parent wouldn’t say to their child. It was more that he said it to her. Her Daddy and she always been best friends who did special things like seeing who could suck down a milkshake the fastest or watch a PG movie sometimes when she was only allowed to watch G movies. Elizabeth stared at Jarred seeing his side glance and not understanding what to do when he instantly dropped his threat as he continued to pass out food. He didn’t talk like that to her often and when he did she had done something she wasn’t supposed to. Tonight, however, she had said no thank you.

“Besides, how can you hate it if you haven’t tried anything. If you try everything, with some nice big healthy bites and you still can’t stand anything then maybe I will go back to the replicator for you.” Jarred said, almost feeling the counter coming from his little girl as he leaned over to kiss her forehead.

While Jarred might not have seen the proverbial hamsters taking to the wheel of her mid and firing up the gray matter there to work out a solution to this predicament, Kalani and his mother did. Elizabeth chewed her bottom lip for a second. She did not want to make her daddy mad or sad. She had seen him that way when he and PaPa talked adult as her Nana called it. Highly unhappy, Elizabeth picked up a fork and poked at several of the options on her plate. “I want pizza because we have pizza for celebrations and tonight we get to celebrate being a family,” Elizabeth announced poking her food enough with the fork that she pushed it about her plate. She did like the idea of this being a celebration even if technically she did not do anything special like win a game of soccer or bring home a good note from school. She opened her mouth to ask him to cut up the steak more but closed it. Her daddy did not seem to care right now

“Pizza is great little one, it is… but there is other things to try. Do Daddy a favor and just see what you like, you might be surprised.” he said looking at her as she took the bite.

Stabbing a hunk of the meat onto her fork, Elizabeth stared at the brown bite of Salisbury steak as if it were something to be inspected and not eaten. Pulling back her lips in a tight smile she exposed only her front incisors biting off a crumble. Wrinkling up her nose as if it were unedible she shook her head and wiggled acting like she had to fight down the bite. “No thank you,” she said putting the fork down. “I don’t like it. I do like pizza though. Cheese pizza please.” There still three things on her plate but her daddy could not have thought she would try everything even if he suggested it.

“Oh you can try better than that peanut.” Papa said as he looked at he granddaughter. “Do as your daddy said, eat more than just a tiny bite.”

Not being anything but Jarred’s girlfriend, Kalani tried not to smirk and stared down at her food until she was able to compose herself.

Jarred didn’t show it, but his father backing him did mean a lot to him. “See little one, you have me and Papa saying you should eat more. Come on you can’t disappoint us both now can you?”

Alindor, CE

“Real steak is not slimy,” Elizabeth said sliding the bite of meat on her plate using the gravy to make it appear to skate around effortlessly. Her response was low, very low. Her daddy had asked twice and her PaPa once for her to try her dinner. If they were back home on the moon it would have been two times too many at this point. She knew something was up with the adults. Her daddy was almost too accommodating to her PaPa and Nana and her PaPa was being very nice to her daddy. This was probably the reason neither of them had pushed the point further.

It was then that Elizabeth pulled the jambalaya over to her. One whiff and she turned up her nose. Pinching it she said, “this smells funny.”

“You know if you don’t like the steak you could try something else first,” Kalani stated taking a sip of her drink. “My dinner choice has a surprise inside.”

“A surprise,” Elizabeth sat up looking at Kalani and then her daddy a bit skeptical. “You mean like the when there is gum in the middle of a lollipop because,” Elizabeth sat upright for the first time since dinner was served and leaned a bit over the table, “they don’t let me have bubble gum,” she said in a soft but firm tone.

“Not gum but a yummier one,” Kalani countered.

“Yummier than gum,” Elizabeth eyed the weird block of food the table and the smaller portion on her plate.

“Mmm hmm,” Kalani said taking another bite. To her kids were a piece of cake. Just make them think it was something cool and they did whatever you want. This was the same with most of the animals she had collected. When you were lost at how to make something act a certain way, apply the rules of biology and in this case, it was to pique curiosity.

“Yummier than gum…” Jarred said as he eyed the plate. He hadn’t tried the dish himself but it was the least likely of dishes he suspected of her liking. “Really little one? It’s just… really?”

Elizabeth doubted Kalani yet she had to eat something and anything looked better than that steak and her daddy’s stinky soup. Picking up her fork she stabbed a piece of the rice log. Elizabeth thought about just licking it but her tummy was rumbling. She was getting hungrier and hungrier but she couldn’t say that because her Daddy would remind her they were currently having dinner. Opening her mouth she put the piece in. Elizabeth chewed it once slowly as if she was scared it would hurt her. My the second chomp, her worried expression was turning happy. As soon as she swallowed it, Elizabeth speared a second piece. The rest of the Spam Musubi was gone from her plate in a matter of seconds. Elizabeth was shoveling it in faster than a cadet on a lunch break at the academy. “Can I hab moh pease,” elizabeth asked Jarred while chewing her last piece. Kalani was right. There was something special in the middle. It was an egg. Elizabeth loved eggs and waffles. Having an egg on your rice was just plain cool and yummy to boot.

Kalani Kane

“More… I mean… yeah you can baby.” Jarred said in shock, he looked over at his parents than to Kalani. “I guess… you have a winner here. What is it again love?” he asked as he looked at her with a cautious look.
