“Starbase Control, this is Shuttle ‘Croft’ requesting launch clearance for test flight and transit to USS Saracen”

Izzy listened with half an ear to the comm traffic, her fingers dancing over the controls as she brought the shuttle’s systems online and powered up the engines. On the ‘A’ of ‘Affirmative’ she punched the thrusters, sending the small craft racing away from the auxiliary landing pad like a scolded jackrabbit. She calmly threaded the small craft between two incoming bulk freighters before straightening out on a course that took her out and away away from the station.

“Starbase control, please pass on my compliments the the maintenance crews, they know how to tune an Armadillo” She said with a grin, turning the craft into an almost lazy parabolic turn that allowed her to take in the various craft docked in and around the station. She soon spotted her target and angled the craft in for a closer look.

“USS Saracen, NCC-86285” she intoned, as she flew over the saucer section, almost close enough to reach out and touch the giant letters. She flicked the small craft into a turn before sending it through a tight barrel roll as she streaked past the observation windows of ten forward.

Dante was leaning back in his chair looking out that window and just taking a sip of a large and hot cup of coffee, his first for a few hours in fact, with his eyes half closed as he savored the smell and the first taste of the brew as it touched his lips when the shuttle flashed past the redesigned 10 Forward. The unexpected sight made his eyes fly wide and he came forward suddenly, watching the shuttle. This, unfortunately resulted in hot coffee splashing down the front of his tunic and he switched the cup to his other hand and shook hot coffee of his other one.

“Figlio di puttana!” he said, rather loudly in Italian as he watched the shuttle complete it’s high speed barrel roll. “Stronzo!” came very quickly afterwards, and he had been very careful to make sure that the ships universal translator Wouldn’t translate those particular words when he said them.

“USS Saracen this is Shuttle Croft requesting permission to land. Test flight complete, everything checks out, green across the board..... roger that, entering the approach pattern”

Izzy looped the shuttle around, lining her up with the bay doors and decelerating rapidly down to landing speed, coasting the shuttle into the bay.

Lt Izzy Gonzales

As Izzy sat at the controls she might notice a large hangar bay like all hangar bays. Non-descript to the point of boring a utilitarian. Rows of shuttles with men in jumpsuits scurrying about hooking up hoses and detaching cables as per part of their workday.

All would be the same events Gonzales had seen except for one thing. Out of nowhere a small red orb about nine inches high came flying at her view port. The clunk could easily be heard as it bounced off. The event happened so fast if Izzy was watching she might have wondered if it did occur and if she had been looking down she might wonder what happened. Either way, about twenty seconds later the same clunk could be heard but this time higher as it impacted the hull right above the space where the view port was.

Looking out the view port if you were in the shuttle one might see Crewmen running away and a flash of brown-green pop up from the bottom of the viewport followed by the sounds of scratching. Like the kind associated with fingernails in a zombie flick scraping a metal door. The sound paused only long enough for a longer flash of brown-green that this time might be recognized as the jaw of a lizard or alligator. The flash was longer but still quick enough to make one wonder what the heck was happening and if they were not suffering from a bout of hallucinations.

It would be then if one was looking out the view port they would see it. A sight they would never forget. As if on a trampoline a large lizard or maybe alligator belly landed on the view port with a thump. Scrabbling sounds would be heard as its claws tried to find purchase yet slowly it was sliding back down the view port, bringing a long and skinny snout into view with two beady eyes that looked down and fixed Izzy with an unusually intelligent glare. The long tongue flicked once, licking the windscreen in an ‘It’s mine’ type statement.

Stepping out of the turbo-lift, coffee smeared over the front of his Command Red shirt and a scold mark on his hand from the hot liquid, Dante looked up and down the hallway as a couple of Ensigns paused to stare at the CO with the coffee stain. One opened their mouth to comment on his obviously burned hand, but judging by the look on the CO’s face, he had all Torpedo tubes loaded and the phaser banks charged.

They carried on and minded their own business.

Moments later and the doors to the Shuttle bay opened, and Dante walked in to find Nat picking up a 9 inch round red ball from the ground, and Bruce just dropping to the ground further away after using one of his shuttles, the ‘Croft’ that had been away for refit, as a jumping pad to retrieve said ball. Tasia must have been using the hangar as a larger exercise area for Bruce on the quiet day, while the Saracen neared the end of its 10 year refit. “Nat” Dante said to her, coming up beside her and placing his good hand on the small of her back in greeting, “I’m glad you brought Bruce down here” he said, his eyes fixed on the shuttle. “Today, I might let him eat somebody.”
