By the time Flynn arrived at the the Security office his anger had ebbed away and been replaced by eager anticipation, even the reminder of Elaine couldn’t destroy the excitement he felt at the prospect of having a Klingon Chief of Security. Finally, finally he might finally have a superior officer who wasn’t a pencil pusher or pansy. His superior on the U.S.S Trident had been a bald young man who was content for nothing more than to sit behind a desk and played it safe. He was almost confident that a Klingon officer would be nothing like that.

He pushed the chime to the CoS’s Office and took a step back. Reflexifly, his hands smothed out his hair and uniform until he looked more like a model than a Starfleet Officer. He wasn’t a proud man, but he’d learnt in his teenage years that his charm was more effect when he maintained his looks. Now making sure he looked emmaculate came as second nature to him.

A voice came from the other side of the door. “Come!”

Inside was a thin Earth female with blond hair tightly braided and coiled around her head. Her security uniform gave her away as a member of the team. She was seated at the small table with two chairs that sat to the side of the desk. She smiled and nodded to him. “You much be new. I am NE Embers. Just finishing up a report for Lieutenant Triton. She should be back shortly if you want to wait.” She nodded to the other chair and then went back to her padd.

Flynn frowned, electing a look of disappointment at finding the office still lacking the CoS. “Thanks,” he said plainly, taking the offered seat. He’d already finished both his Psych and his Physical this time round, and had postponed that date with the Bajoran NE so he really had nothing better to do. So he sat and glanced round the officer, looking to see what he could glean about his new Chief.

The room was nearly void of anything personal. On the wall behind the desk was a dark painting of deep colored brush strokes horizontally on a framed canvas in what appeared to be oil colors. Deep red, blues, violets and crimsons made it appear like the artist was trying to capture a sunset, but had the shades far too dark to make it real. On the other wall was a bat’leth. On closer inspection it was a simple practice one and not a House etched blade. The young woman started humming absently as her stylus and fingers danced over the small hand held device. “You settling in, ok?” she asked absently to break the silence.

Flynn’s head jerked towards the young woman, from where his eyes had been examining the bat’leth. At the young woman’s question his mind flashed through the day, from the Bajoran NE that reminded him of his ex, to the showdown he’d lost with Lt. Com. Sinclaire, and the floating tricorder in Sickbay, and now he was taking a second attempt at meeting an absent CoS, “It’s been… interesting,” he gave her one of his classic charming smiles, “but the best ships usually are,” he winked. “How do you find the ship?” he asked.

Embers nodded. “It takes a bit of getting used to. This is my first ship. But the Security Chief is really cool once you get to know her. I think it’s great we have a female Chief.” She laughed. “Silly, I know… But it’s great work with someone I can see myself becoming someday. Chief, I mean.” She laughed and blushed realizing how stupid and ridiculous she sounded.

“It’s not silly to have ambitions,” Flynn said, liking what he was hearing about his new Chief. “What about the rest of the crew?”

“And yeah… The rest of the crew are great, too.”

“They’re a lot more exciting than my last crew,” the handsome ensign laughed, “My old chief was more than happy to sit behind a chair and let the rest of us do his work for him. I’m hoping that having a Klingon superior will make things more… exciting. I might only be human myself, but somehow I get the sense that this ship is going to be more exciting than the last,”

“Did you know that the Counselor used to be a Security Chief back in the day?” Fraiser asked with ‘innocent’ curiosity. He had originally hoped that he could get to the Security Chief before he saw the Counselor so that she would be able to form her own opinion of him .But since he hadn’t managed to achieve that, given she was busy elsewhere when he’d shown up early, he wanted to get a sense of what others thought of Sinclair hoping it would give him an idea of how much of a threat the Counselor was going to be to Fraisers own reputation.

Embers smiled. “Well, I am sure this ship will be more than exciting for you, then. As for the Councilor, I didn’t know.” She shrugged and set her padd down and leaned back to relax, rocking her neck side to side to stretch it. “But it makes sense. I mean, he seems more the ‘capable’ kind than the ‘book worm’ kind. Don’t you think? I’ve only seen him a couple times when I had to.” She wrinkled her nose. “I’m not big on sharing my feelings, I guess. Been told I am a work driven individual with barely passable social connections.” She said the line like it was a diagnosis she was quoting. Then she laughed. “I guess it’s a polite way to say I am goal oriented and don’t have many friends.”
