It had been one of the hardest few days Sinclair had had in a long time. Only on board for a few days; and today he had dealt with holograms, psychotics, therapy animals that weren’t, and… the rest he just shook out of his mind. He remembered the first time he had gone out for drinks with the other members of the Counseling group at the Academy. Their instructor came with them and said “A Counselor who doesn’t need a drink at least once a week is not doing their job.” and proceeded to drink all but the big Scot under the table.

Changing into comfortable clothes consisting of faded jeans, a t-shirt with a Warhol-esque picture of Sigmund Freud colored in neon colors under a unzipped light jacket with a sports team crest on the left breast and comfortable athletic shoes, he made his way to the Lounge. Walking in, it was slightly crowded as it was time for a good number of the crew to take their evening meal. He looked around, saw the bar was full, and then spied a table where it appeared the four NE’s currently seated were getting ready to leave. Getting a whiskey and placing a food order, he made his way to the table as it emptied and took a seat. Sighing heavily, he took a sip of his drink, shook his head slightly and looked out the window.

Izzy stepped into the lounge and glanced around, taking in the the busy hubbub as various members of the crew chatted over their meals and refreshments. With time to kill before her next appointment she grabbed herself a Cappuccino and biscotti from the replicator. She had plenty of time before her next appointment with… she checked her PADD… the Counselor. “Great.” She muttered to herself.

She glanced around and spotted an empty seat at a table. She hustled over before it could be taken, expertly balancing the scolding hot coffee as she weaved around and between chairs, tables, and errant crew members.

“Cool Shirt.” She said, dropping into the empty seat. “Star Wars fan eh?” she said, pointing at the colourful painting of a bearded chap on her new friends’ shirt.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi right? A total classic, I’ve not seen that one in ages”

Izzy Gonzales

Sinclair looked up at the new arrival and said “Huh? Oh. Right. Sure, we’ll go with Star Wars.” and he chuckled. “Don’t think I’ve had the pleasure. I’m Royal. And you are?” and he reached a large muscular arm across the table and extended his hand.

Izzy flashed the gent a grin and shook the offered hand, her own petite digits pretty much swallowed by the grip.

“Izzy. Good to meet you Royal. I’ve just transferred in and thought I’d drop by for a quick snack between stops, making the usual rounds, etc, etc, etc”

She settled back in her seat and pretended to stifle an exaggerated yawn at the mention of paperwork and protocol, a mischievous twinkle in her eye.

Another figure made their way into the Lounge. Rather short at 5‘4”, he wouldn’t cut that much of an impressive figure if it wasn’t for the other aspects of his biology. The head of some kind of reptilian creature topped his neck, and instead of skin he was covered in dark grey scales, with what looked like two little yellow racing stripes going from his upper lip, over his head, and down to the tip of his long, tapered, snake-like tail. Gavain, the Chief of Operations, was a slim individual, almost to the point of being lanky. His posture and gait communicated an air of joviality. He wore his uniform.

Gavain stepped into the Lounge and glanced around, searching for an inviting moment or position for him to step into. Noticing an unfamiliar face, he made his way over to Sinclair and the young woman sitting at his table. “Mind if I join?” he asked.

Gavain, COO

“Feel free…” She glanced at the pips on the newcomers uniform “.....Lieutenant.”

She waved a hand to the empty chairs at the table, indicating for him to take his pick of the chairs available.

“I’m Izzy Gonzales, the new helm officer, just come aboard and killing some time before the usual boarding interviews start.”

She waved her PADD full of appointments before placing it back on the table alongside her coffee cup and half eaten biscotti.

“Figured I’d take the chance before all these start to see if I can meet some new folks and have a quick snack to get my energy levels up enough to deal with the snore fest this lot of appointments will no doubt turn out to be, department head meet and greet, medical probing, councilor headshrinking…”

She cocked her head on one side, closed her eyes and let out a fake snore before breaking out in a grin again.

Royal laughed and said “Yeah. I hear the Counselor is a right master at boring people. Haven’t met anyone yet that has said they actually liked their check in with them.” he said, and leaned in a said slightly conspiratorially “I also heard that he actually showed up in Engineering and pulled an Ensign off duty because he kept skipping his evaluation. Pretty cocky for a head shrinker, if you ask me.” and then leaned back to see how his two new associates dealt with that piece of information. Which was actually true. He did, of course, clear it with the Chief Engineer first. But right now, he considered that superfluous information.

Gavain glanced at the counselor for a moment with a somewhat confused expression on his face and opened his mouth slightly to speak, but then he realized the joke and nodded slightly, chuckling. Gavain licked his eye, the long reptilian tongue flicking up to slap onto his sclera and wipe away a little bit of grime. Most found it odd, but it was instinct for him. “He’s new to this ship though. Perhaps he will turn over a new leaf,” he suggested with a small smile. “I don’t mean to change the subject, but is that, per chance, Freud? I’m getting a little more practiced at being able to distinguish various famous humans from your history. Hitler and Einstein are, perhaps, the easier faces to visually identify, but Freud’s philosophy was rather fascinating.”

He glanced at the girl and gave her a quick visual scan. Lieutenant. Yellow. Izzy Gonzales. He blinked, and tilted his head a bit. Helm and… Operations. Yes, he had seen her picture on the list of incoming officers. Along with the new counselor. Yes. His department. “Welcome to the Saracen,” he commented. His voice was strange, definitely not human. It was smooth and soft, almost feminine. Gavain himself was so slender it was actually impossible to tell the gender, but humans would assume male upon seeing the flat chest. They would be right, but for the wrong reason. Even the females of his species had flat chests.
