Embers smiled. “Well, I am sure this ship will be more than exciting for you, then. As for the Councilor, I didn’t know.” She shrugged and set her padd down and leaned back to relax, rocking her neck side to side to stretch it. “But it makes sense. I mean, he seems more the ‘capable’ kind than the ‘book worm’ kind. Don’t you think? I’ve only seen him a couple times when I had to.” She wrinkled her nose. “I’m not big on sharing my feelings, I guess. Been told I am a work driven individual with barely passable social connections.” She said the line like it was a diagnosis she was quoting. Then she laughed. “I guess it’s a polite way to say I am goal oriented and don’t have many friends.”

“He’s definitly not your typical Counselor,” Flynn agreed, “Though you should try being called ‘deflective and controlling’,” Flynn quoted back, and laughed, “I don’t like talking about myself either and that’s what I got for trying to change the topic. I don’t get why Counselors have to pry into every aspect of our lives in our evaluations. Being ambitions,” he inclied his head towards Embers, “Or being private shouldn’t be an issue, but they seem to think it is.” he shrugged, “Counselors don’t seem to like me that much. But if I’m being honest the feelings mutual.” he flashed Embers another smile, to show he was joking about the last sentence… well mostly joking.

Embers smiled back. “I don’t think anyone likes them, really. But think of it from a security point of view. We have to protect the ship and her crew. We carry phasers, train in combat and learn to see terrible. But he has to look out for our well being. And it’s not as easy as medical.”

She leaned forward and rested her arms on the table. “You know why medical is usually our first check in? Base lines. From transporters to medical history. The computers connect the baselines. When you left your last command, you were in a certain state of health and growth that will match your arrival here.” Her fingers tapped the table to indicate two points. “When you leave, your medical check out here,” she tapped again where she indicated ‘here’ was, “will match you boarding check up there.” Her other finger indicated a third spot.

Flynns eyes followed her fingers across the table as she tapped out the points. He nodded every now and again, indicating to Embers that he both understood and acknowledged what she was telling him.

“Councilors have to do the same thing with mentality. Are you as stable, or crazy,” she winked and made a goofy face, “as you were where you were last time? And if not… Then what happened? How does he did it? And how does he keep it from happening again?”

The girl leaned back and shrugged. “Probably the single hardest job on the ship, CO included.”

“They probably do,” Fraiser agreed seriously, “I know I couldn’t do it every day, just my evaluation this morning was enough to do my head in for one day. Why Lt. Com. Sinclair chose it over Security I’ll never know,” he smirked, “I can appreciate that their job is hard, but that still doesn’t mean I have to like Counselors.”

“So how long have you been on the ship for?” Flynn asked conversationally, wanting to move the conversation away from sympathy for Counselors while he was still unhappy about how his Psych evaluation went.

“I know there are plenty of reasons ‘I’ didn’t choose that profession, either.” Embers laughed and leaned back once more. “And we can just agree to dislike them together. How’s that?” She grinned and shrugged at his question. “It seems like forever. To be honest… long enough to see several new comers,” she winked teasing him once more. “But not long enough to see a new CO.”

“Sounds good to me,” Flynn grinned back. Embers wouldn’t be able to tell but his smiles were becoming more genuine. “So you’re an old hand,” Flynn teased her back, smirking.

It dawned on her they were focusing on her. She turned the tables on him… “So what kinds of things do you like to do when not running from councilors or the Security Chief?” She laughed and waited for his answer. It had been a long time since she’d made a friend. And this guy seemed like someone she could get used to being around.

Embers

“Its hard to top running from Counselors and Security Chiefs,” Fraiser chuckled,”But I do like training on the holodeck. There’s something satisfying about feeling fit, you know?” Fraiser shrugged, “Aside from that I’m an avid fan of ice-hocky. Apparently before I wanted to be a Starfleet Officer I wanted to play ice-hockey, but I’m a terrible ice-skater.”

“What about yourself?” he asked, “What does a ‘work driven’ ensign with few social connections do when she’s not trying to climb the social ladder?” He threw her own quotations back at her, with a playful wink. He was surprised to realize that any and all tensions he had leftover from his psych and physical evaluations had all but ebbed away, as he’d relaxed into talking to Embers. He was enjoying talking to the other Ensign and his better self was coming out.

Embers laughed at his throw back. “Touche… well… when not ‘climbing the social ladder’ I train on the holo deck as well. I got the chance in the Academy to sword fight with a Japanese classmate. It was amazing. I fell in love immediately. It’s a great way to keep limber and make your moves more fluid and precise. Though I admit I’ve never holo played on ice. I have never been ice skating.” She screwed up her face in admittance that not having been skating seemed almost ridiculous. “But I also like creating holos of places we can’t go.” She leaned forward on her elbows again and her face lit up. “Have you ever sat on an asteroid beside a star going supernova? Or the edge of a volcano as it erupted? Or even just on a stone in a dust ring circling some planet no one will ever reside on because of the electrical storms that set off gas clouds in the atmosphere that chase all over the surface like colored paint spilled from buckets? We are in space to explore. The programs allow us to experience as well.” She leaned back and the blush on her cheeks darkened as she looked at her hands suddenly in her lap. “I mean, if you ever want to see them sometime, I’m happy to show you.” She glanced back up as a thought occurred to her. “I mean, if you don’t have a girlfriend on another ship that’s gonna hunt me down or anything.” She smiled still but at least the color was starting to return.

“I can’t say I’ve done any of those things. But they sound like fun! I never thought of using the holodeck in such a creative manner before,” Flynn praised trying to imagine what it felt like to sit and experience even one of the scenarios that Ember had listed. There was no way he couldn’t admire the creativity and effort that the woman must had to have created such exotic holoscenarios. “I’d love to experience one of your holos,” he laughed at the comment about a girlfriend and shook his head, “My ex-girlfriend and I split just before we graduated, it was… messy. I highly doubt she’s going to hunt you down,” Flynn chuckled, “After that I figured it was better to focus on my own career, nobody on my last ship really piqued my interest anyway,”
