Jet black hair in a long braid swung almost hypnotically behind the gypsy looking woman in engineering garb as she walked towards medical. Vadoma had arrived the night before and was looking forward to the first of several checkins that would make her a part of the Saracen crew. The five foot seven inch woman whose body was build like a runner, moved with an almost abnormal grace around corners and between small groups of fellow ship mates as she traversed the halls. She had memorized the way to medical, the common rooms, engineering and the councilor’s office. She wanted to be ready if anything happened before she was completely integrated and checked in.

She rounded the corner and entered medical. Eyes of eerie silver gazed around the room as her hands smoothed out invisible wrinkles on her impeccable uniform. She smiled at the crew member she saw exiting and stepped aside to clear the door before stepping further in and seeing if anyone was available. She didn’t want to intrude on those already occupied with other crew mates.

Daye looked at the list of appointments for sickbay and glanced up at the door. She had been waiting to see one new arrival. The name as it crossed the list of people transferring on had instantly caught her attention. Romani. It was clearly Russian. Daye just wondered how much so. Seeing her she walked up to the waiting area of sickbay. “Ensign Romani I’m Dr. Daye. Wanna come with me to get your physical done” she asked with a smile.

Romani turned and smiled as the woman approached her. “Hello, Doctor. Yes, of course.” She followed where she was led and slid gracefully up onto the med bed as directed while watching the woman move. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Doctor Daye. Hope things haven’t been too horribly crazy for you lately. Seems like Science is about the only department that craves craziness on a daily basis.” She smiled and leaned back slightly on her arms as she waited.

“That’s only becuase you missed NE crewman Baker sleeping off a bender earlier and snoring like a freight shuttle or NE Ensigns Keller and Walker in here claiming his broken nose was due to walking into a door and not due to her left hook. He was having a drink with crewman Parker last night and as you can tell the names don’t match,” Daye said with half a chuckle. “You just came on a down hour. So tell me a little bit about yourself.,” daye said starting the scan. “Your name…Romani…that’sssss,” Daye held onto the “s” for a bit longer trying to decide how to finish her sentence. From Dayes small corner of the world the surname Romani was tied to the word gusty like peanut butter was tied to jelly. She just didn’t know how Val would feel if Daye busted out with hey are you a gypsy becuase your last name sounds like one.

Vadoma laughed. “We’ll I’m glad I could fill in the boring moments.” She watched the woman’s efficient movements and smiled. “It’s ok… You can say Gypsy. It’s not a bad word. Most people assume it anyway. To be honest, I think my ancestors, at some time, wanted that image exactly. Apparently the last name used to be Romaninski. But some crazy Uncle did something not so acceptable and lineage name was changed to save the rest of us from embarrassment.” She shook her head like it was ridiculous in her eyes. “While we don’t usually roam like the gypsies of the 21st and 22nd centuries, apparently the itchy feet syndrome lives on. Most of my family is, it was, in space in some capacity.”

“My mother was a lingerie model and my father the man who shot her for the Vicktoria’s Whispers catalogue,” Daye said with a shrug. “I am not saying my family was a prude but my babushaka sure gave my dad the ‘you brought shame to the family putting pictures of your wife across the galaxy’ speech. The funny part was they were not married at the time and all their intimacy was around fifteen other people and hot set lights beating down on them. My Babushka says after that shoot she forced my mom to get married to give our family a respectable name. The issue was that my mom took my Dad’s name so the family name Petrov was always going to be safe. I mean forget uncle Sergi and that woman he took up with double his age or my Aunt Ludmilla who did the same but with some guy that could have passed for her grandson,” Daye laughed. “Family you can’t pick them but you are sure stuck with them.”

As the scanner over her, she changed subjects. “Fracture residue in right shin is from kicking a fellow cadet at academy during first year. Took self defense after that to learn to kick better. Healed fine. No issues except during space walk. That cold hurts every injury.” She laughed. “And blood cell count is off somehow, it’s in my records. Something genetic about balance of red and white. I can never remember exactly. Never been an issue, far as I know. But that’s all and it’s in my records.”

She took a deep breath and relaxed. Daye was easy to talk to and she realized she’d been rambling.

“Well you do look healthy and next time you are stuck fixing a hooza-what-its on my boyfriends floating tin can make sure you play up that cold injury.” Leaning in Daye kept her voice low but nodded to a small alcove with an extremely hot man talking to another woman on the table. “Chad over there is the resident Physical therapist and orthopedist. I have been known to play up a tight quad now and then,” she let out a small laugh. “I might be engaged to the big guy but I can still appreciate a nice bit o’ eye candy if you know what I mean.”

“So now that I have pointed out why I get an exorbitant amount of Victoria’s Whispers boxes at each star base and that I have the stereotypical meddling Russian grandmother what can you counter with,” Daye asked finishing writing up her report of Vadoma. Living on a star ship and being the Captain’s live in was not always the easiest. There was something about this Vadom that seemed wild and exciting. She was easy to talk to and for some reason Daye felt there could be a chance she would enjoy getting to know this crew member more over the hundreds of others on the ship. Hopefully Vadom thought the same.

Vadoma had listened and laughed. “Well now, aren’t we a pair, Doc. I would be willing to bet our family reunions would be so hodge-podge I doubt either side would claim the rightful names.” She shook her head. “While I admit we haven’t had anything that scandalous in a couple generations, I admit there are several uncles out there and possibly a grandmother who would embrace your family like long lost cousins.”

She nodded as she was cleared and her eyes rose at the mention of a physical therapist worth ‘checking in with’ now and then. “So… lots of Whispers boxes, eh? Well, if you happen to end up with too much, I am always happy to lend a hand to a friend in need of purging herself of excess baggage.” She smiled and winked.

As the challenge to counter the ‘one in every family, two in mine’, Vadoma managed a shrug. “I don’t think I can match that, honestly. My father raised me. I don’t know about my grandmother. She apparently didn’t like him going to the City for my training. And my mother died when I was very young. But I assure you, I am happy to lament your grandmother’s wrath and help you flaunt your lineage to everyone and anyone you desire.” She nudged the woman’s shoulder slightly. “And I don’t care if you are the Captain’s wife… it’s not him I have to deal with, so I’m not worried.” She winked to show the woman that if the CO’s position in the equation didn’t bother her, it didn’t bother Vadoma. “And please, call me Ada. It’s easier.”

As the woman finished her exam, Ada found herself looking at the therapist once more. She only ached in the deep of space. And the deep of space was the one place she had no desire to be. But she was sure there would have to be a reason to see him at some point. Till then, perhaps she and the Doc would fair well as friends. Most on the ship seemed uptight so far. It was refreshing to find someone more open.
