Saatynn moved quickly through the ship, towards the CSO’s office, chuckling at a joke he remembered from his days at the Academy. He ignored the looks he got from various crewmembers, he’d learned long ago that most people were afraid of that which they don’t understand. He didn’t understand the desire for much of his people to repress their emotions, as long as they learned from their past.

He sighed, and rang the chime of the chief’s office, stepping back and crossing his arms behind him to wait.

“Come,” Came the call from the young Chief. When the Ensign entered he would notice the semi decorated office. It was as if the Lieutenant had a number of things he wanted to put around the office, but he didn’t have an organized idea on how each piece would or even could work together. Aside from that the room was relatively neat and the Chief was behind a desk staring at a screen.

CSO

Saatynn came to attention in front of the desk, “Ensign Saatynn reporting for duty.” With the facial expression omitted, Saatynn looked like almost any other Vulcan.

However, taking the fact that there was emotion on his face cause many to assume he was either a halfbreed Vulcan/Human, or a Romulan without the eyebrow ridges. Both assumptions were completely wrong, of course.

Graham scanned him up and down for a moment. “Your grades at the Academy were strong, so there are no academic issues. Most Vulcans with a proficiency in science serve on Vulcan National ships or at the Science Academy, so why Star-Fleet?” It was a blunt question, but a Vulcan shouldn’t mind.

Graham

“Of course, because I have pointed ears and green blood, I should serve at the Vulcan Science Academy. And no, I’m not a hybrid.” Saatynn said, “Starfleet because there’s nothing for me left on Vulcan. I shunned Surak’s teachings, so I am not able to get a Science Academy posting. And while I might be able to get a posting on a Vulcan ship, that wouldn’t be good for my mental health.”

Ens Saatynn

Teller looked at the Ensign for a moment with a combination of surprise and curiosity. “Perhaps I misunderstand the norms of Vulcan behavior. But more likely you don’t fall within the norms. What is certain, I shouldn’t have made an assumption based on what I think are norms, since you are an individual. A better question, was why did you chose to serve in Star-Fleet? But you answered that to some degree, so I’d rather know what you meant by good for you mental health.”

Graham

“Despite the normal connotation, Vulcans are able to look down on others. That would happen with me on a Vulcan ship. I’d be exposed to comments about my emotions, a lack of advancement based simply on that fact, and its very under stimulating for one with emotions. That’s the main reason we don’t allow anyone outside of Vulcans to serve on our ships, they’d be terribly bored.” Saatynn said, nodding a little bit.

Ens Saatynn

“Well, if that’s true, you made the right decision to join us in Star-Fleet and I presume you will do well here and make it a benefit for both of us.” Graham looked at him for a moment and exhaled.

“Mr. Saatynn, sometimes people aren’t the best they can be, usually made worse when they are surrounded by other people who also aren’t being their best. I don’t think you need to find a place you can fit it. I think you need a place where it okay if you stand out. I want you to stand out. You be the best you, you can be… and you’ll always have a place with me.” Graham stood up handing him a PaDD.

“These are your duty assignments.”

Graham.

Saatynn smiled at his words, “well said, Lieutenant. You’ll get nothing but my best, sir.” He said while taking the PaDD and glancing at it.

Ens Saatynn

The shifts were unremarkable, standard fare for a new ensign on a new ship.

“Nothing unusual. I can handle this easily. Anything in particular you want me working on, sir?”

Ens Saatynn

“Nothing right now, we are between missions get yourself acclimated and finish both your medical and psych evals.”

Graham
