The Starfleet logo on Knight’s screen flickered out and the craggy, germanic looking Admiral sat in full uniform with the scene of the Academy grounds behind him in the background. It was obviously middle of the day in San Francisco and shuttles flitted back and forth in the now blue sky where the fog had lifted off.

His hands were folded in front of him, when he saw the Captain he nodded curtly.”Captain Knight, my aide reports that your refit should be finished very soon. Are you and your crew ready to head out again?”

Admiral Hermann

Dante nodded, and suddenly wished he had made himself a coffee before taking the call. That did run the risk of waking Natasha with the aroma however. “We are loading the ships supplies as we speak, Admiral,” he told the man, “and the crew is getting a little house crazy. We’re ready, what have you got for us?”

Captain Knight, CO

“Good. We have a bit of mystery for you. I am sending you a packet with a copy of the signals we have noticed coming from the Bretaka Nebula. It’s much closer to where you are then us. Our Science Division tells us these are more than just pulsars as they come and go in a regular pattern. Head out there and check them out.” With a few taps on his desk Hermann sent the data packet to Saracen. “Bermann out.” The Admiral was obviously not a man for chit chat.

Dante simply nodded, and the screen went dark and returned to the normal Starfleet emblem. It sounded simple enough, go and check some odd signals. It was nothing unusual and Dante had done that very mission countless times, but something sat uneasily in his stomach and it wasn’t Natasha’s Mac n Cheese. “The Bretaka Nebula.” he repeated to himself, then rubbed his face and felt the extra stubble that was on it.

The Saracen was about ready to depart and in a day or so they would have all their supplies on board, but the supplies they were taking on now were extended supplies, and they could pick those up later. Everything else, was complete and he was sure the crew would want to stretch their space legs again.

Still early, Dante decided he wasn’t going to get much more sleep, so he returned to the bedroom and gently made sure Nat was still sleeping soundly and was tucked in, then showered and dressed for the day. Leaving Natasha a hand written note to let her know he had received orders from Command and had decided to start work early, he kissed her gently and looked at Bruce, a clear expectation to look after her. The Monitor Lizard flicked his tongue in acknowledgement. Or Ignorance. It was hard to tell with Bruce at times.

A short time later, he stepped out of the Bridge to the turbo-lift to the surprised looks of the early morning Bridge crew. Giving the Ensign that had sent him the Admirals call a smile, he waved to the Officer on Watch to remain seated and entered the Ready Room. Here he made coffee and brought up the data from the Admiral, then began to study their orders and the signal information while bringing up the Bretaka Nebula information on the next console. After a time, he sent out a message to all Department Heads and Senior Staff that they would get when they woke.

The Packet that the Admiral sent was concise, as obviously the Admiral didn’t have a lot of information to give. The signals had first been picked up by Starfleet Science and the theory was that a sudden appearance of the 3 pulsars that began to emit radiation on the edge of the Betreka Nebula, were just a freak occurrence.

It was believed the spatial bodies must have been there before but the radiation hadn’t been strong enough to emit to Earth or that they hadn’t been pointed toward Earth.
After the Science team had spent time going over the records and logs from ship scans of the area of the three pulsars it was found that they had not been there before. Which was puzzling.

The three pulsars were in a triangulation formation and pulsated at a regular event and were situated a couple of light years in the right arm of the nebula.

There were scans of the outer layer of the Nebula but it was not that detailed of a scan as it appeared that the consistency of the Nebula was constantly changing. The Betreka was a dichromic Class T cluster of dark matter and stellar nurseries with extreme gravimetric distortions.

As the makeup of the Nebula appeared to constantly change every time it was studied, Starfleet Science could not say with certainty what would be found when a ship entered.
