She hesitated, but then hurriedly stepped in, eager to avoid anyone seeing her. From there she just began to pace. “I’m sorry! I shouldn’t be bugging you when you’re off-duty but I just didn’t know what to do or where to go and the thought of taking off the emitter made me panic and I didn’t know where else to go because the thought of being around other people right now is appalling-“

“It’s fine. You-“

“But what else do I do, because it’s not like I have any friends here anymore and the one person who says they are my friend hasn’t cared to show it since we broke up, so do I just forget all that and jump in and say ‘Sure, let me just sweep all that under the rug and jump into your perfectly lovely new life and be regularly reminded about all the things I can’t have’?”

“Ok. I’m going to need some reference for -“

“Of course that just makes me feel selfish, but it’s not like there’s anyone else looking out for me,” she said bitterly.

“Now, that’s not entirel-“

Cori stopped her pacing and stared a random spot on the floor, feeling like her insides were twisting. “And they’re gone,” she whispered. How can they be gone? It’s not fair.”

Sinclair finally caught a lull in the barrage of emotion and said softly “Please, sit down. We can talk, that’s not a problem.” and he took a seat himself next to the couch. “Now take a moment. I want you just take a second. And then I want you to start from the beginning. What happened, who you were talking to, and then we will work through it. But we need to go slow. Take all the time you need.” and he leaned back in the chair and looked at her.

Taking a couple shaky breaths, Cori moved to the couch and sat down, frowning deeply. “I was in a meeting room hunting through the crates that hold what personal effects I have. I was trying to find something when Jarred, you know, CE Jarred?”

She exhaled forcibly. “He wanted to talk to me about something major that had just happened and”-Cori shook her head slightly-“he told me that he has a daughter,” she said slowly. A daughter that Lilly had soon after she disappeared that he never knew about until after she was born. That he wasn’t ready to parent, for lots of reasons I actually do get, but he hid her existence from everyone, including me, who he claimed to love at the time we were together. And then I quote on quote died, and those years I was trapped in the computer, he began to see her and then I came back and he still said nothing to me. But there’s a situation now and she’s finally come to live with him. Here. On this ship. With him and his new girlfriend. And he wants me to be a part of her life somehow because I knew her mother.” Even as she finished, that anguished expression returned, expressing the pain she didn’t even know what to make of just yet.

Sinclair took a breath himself. “Ok. Let’s break this down into smaller bits. So first. There are going to be some questions that I ask you multiple times, but it’s becuse you have given me a story with a bit of a convoluted timeline… no reflection on you, just circumstances, ok? So… How do you feel about him not telling you about his daughter while you were still in your original body and you two were a couple?”

Cori shook her head. “No, that was my first death. We got together after that holodeck incident. The death I referred to was when I was technically missing for over 3 years because the Douwd trapped me in a contained part of the computer to prevent me from alerting the crew to what was happening on the ship.” She lifted her chin slightly as she looked at Royal, and it could have been a trick of the light, but it was like her normally vividly electric blue eyes were almost dimmer.
