Sinclair tapped his commbadge and said =/\= Lt. Cmdr. Sinclair to Captain Knight. When you have a moment, Sir, could you please come by my office? Thank you. =/\=
He then set a PaDD on the small table in the center of the room and waited for the Skipper to arrive.

Sinclair, CNS

=/\= Of course Counselor =/\= came the reply from Dante, who happened to have been off duty mere moments before that, but still free. He suspected the Counselor was duty roster watching and smirked.

Not long after, Dante arrived at the office and rang the chime, the standard large cup of coffee in his hand indicating that he had had priorities to attend to before making his way to the office.

Captain Knight, CO

The doors opened and the Counselor looked up and then stood. “Captain. Thank you for coming on short notice. Please have a seat.” he said and indicated the chair opposite a small central table. He came around the desk, picked up a PaDD that had been laying there, and waited for the CO to take his seat.

“Thank you Counselor” Dante said, moving to the indicated chair and making himself comfortable, then taking a look around the room that their new crew member had made his own. All the while nursing that coffee.

The Counselor had been busy. What had been a bare office now was decorated in a warm and calming manner. The desk had been moved to the corner of the space where the bulkhead met the outer hull’s windows, opening the office space up for a seating area large enough to hold more than the single individual that most often came to talk with the ship’s Counselor. A couch and a few chairs were set around a small table, on which sat a crystal bowl filled with multicolored glass beads that seemed to have a small amount of internal light inside them.

Low bookcases lined the walls, each one closed with a glass fronted door with brass hinges, in which sat some real books, many notebooks, and a few bookends of various sizes and shapes. On the wall behind the desk were several pictures on either side of a display case. Each shelf was filled with a few items the young officer had collected so far; but on the top shelf sat a single item housed in a rounded glass display: The Star Fleet Marine Corps Distinguished Service Cross.

“Do you need a refill on your coffee before we begin?” he asked politely.

Sinclair, CNS

“Not at all, it’s a fresh cup of Joe” he grinned. If Sinclair hadn’t already, he would soon learn that a cup of coffee was always near by the Captain. “So your getting stuck in and starting from the top are you?” he said with a smirk, then indicated the medal on the shelf. “That must have a story” he said, “Your record doesn’t indicate receiving that.”

Captain Knight, CO

“Start at the top and the bottom falls together faster, Captain.” Sinclair said with a smile, and then cast a glance at the item the Captain was looking at. A brief look of sadness swept across his face, replaced by a smile of pride. “Not mine. Belonged to Marine Colonel Thomas Kincaid. My grandfather, Seamus, was his Company Gunnery Sergeant. After my Gran passed, the Colonel gave that to me. Said he was awarded it, but my Grandfather earned it. I looked it up while I was on board the Challenger. If you ever want a good war story, let me know. I have a copy of the citation in the base of the display.” and he turned back to Knight. “So, I keep it to help remind me that we are all in this together. Wouldn’t you agree, Sir?”

Sinclair, CNS

“That’s the basic premise of a ship at sea” Dante smiled, “The Master and Commander may be nearly god on his own vessel, but everybody relies on each other like family. Without that, a ship is likely to sink.” He took a draw of his coffee and then placed it down on the desk beside him.

“That story sounds like it is worth hearing over a few drinks” he said, glancing back at the medal, then at the books and notebooks. “Curio’s?” he asked indicating the rather ancient seeming items, “you don’t see them around much these days.”

Captain Knight, CO

“Mementos of home and family. Don’t have them left in the flesh, but the keepsakes were special to someone in the family for various reasons. Have a house in Glasgow with many more, but I thought it prudent to keep them traveling collection to a minimum.” he said with a chuckle. “What about you, Captain? You keep any reminders of home aboard?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Not much” he said as he still looked around at the odds n ends. “My career has been full of short notice moves, problem solving missions. When you live like that, you tend to live light and leave things behind. The two most important things I have with me now are Natasha and Bruce, getting the Saracen permanently means that I can move in the two biggest treasures I have.”

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair arched an eyebrow and said “Are they your children? I didn’t read anything about that in your record…” he asked somewhat confusedly.

Sinclair, CNS

“Half right, kind of” Dante said with a chuckle as he leaned forwards slightly, picking up the coffee now he was settled. “Lieutenant Natasha Daye, my fiancee is a Doctor aboard the Saracen. We’ve been together over 15 years, ever since the Academy. Now I have a more settled Command rather then jumping from ship to ship problem solving, we decided to live together permanently. Bruce, on the other hand, is like a child.” He paused and took a drink.

“Bruce is a rather large Asian Monitor Lizard, belonging to Nat and I. Oh he thinks he’s a dog, or maybe a person, but I rescued him from exotic animal smugglers as a baby and we’ve been together ever since. He’s quite friendly.”

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair chuckled and said “Understood. Never had a lizard myself, but a very nice sheepdog. He was great.” and he tapped a few notes into the PaDD. “So your relationship with Lieutenant Daye. Is this something that is common knowledge, or something you need to take steps to avoid… ‘advertising’? And please, this is not something that I intend to discuss with anyone outside of this room.” and then he laughed slightly, smiled, and added “Unless you need me for premarital counseling. I ask simply to understand if that is a potential source of stress for you.”

Sinclair, CNS

“A potential source of stress?” Dante asked with a smirk. “I take it you haven’t met Lieutenant Daye yet then? Otherwise you probably would be offering me your couch on a more regular basis, especially when she gets going about whatever particular issue she’s decided to have an issue with this week.” He looked at the new Counselor and grinned.

“It’s no secret her and I are together, and also that she was enroute to the Broadsword with me to be my Chief Medical Officer when we were diverted to find the Saracen, and of course she remained here with me when I took over this ship instead of returning to the Broadsword with her. She is my single greatest source of stress, and often at the exact same time, my single greatest source of joy and happiness. We have been together for 15 years Counselor, ever since the Academy, but service in Starfleet has a way of making relationships take a back seat for most and that was most certainly the way with us for many years. Now however, we are ready to settle down and get married. Maybe start a family sometime soon.”

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair smiled and said “Well, that is a good thing to contemplate, isn’t it? And no, I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting the Lieutenant. But I hope to soon. As I’m sure you know, we are really behind in the assessments. But I digress…” and he made a few more notes. As he wrote, he asked flatly “So, Captain. What’s your favorite color and your least favorite word? In any language?” and he looked up at the CO with a sly grin.

Sinclair, CNS

“Really? All that psych training and dollars spent and your going with the favorite color and least favorite word hash? I bet your going to nod knowingly and and ‘hmmm’ and ‘ahhhhh’ like it means something?” Dante grinned at Sinclair, “OK fine, favorite color? Black. There is a rugby team from New Zealand that wear Black as their uniform color, with the catch phrase ‘black is thicker than blood’. I like the connotations that presents, along the lines that the family you create is stronger than the family you came from, or ‘all for one, one for all.’ Plus Black hides a multitude of sins, extra helpings of dessert, wrinkles from a shirt you forgot to iron and bloodstains.” He smirked.

“Least favorite word? That ones easy. ‘Babushka’.

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair listened. As the Captain spoke about the rugby team, he face went flat and expressionless. When the Captain finished. Sinclair simply extended and arm, then his index finger. “Get out. I’ll nae have an All Blacks fan in my office.” and he stared hard at the Captain for a few seconds before cracking a smile. “Scotland. Now and forever.” and he chuckled. “Well, at least you didn’t say the Springboks. So I suppose I can let that lack of taste on your part be forgiven.” and he then said “Favorite song?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Well, I assumed that you had to have some drawbacks and reason’s why they kicked you out of the Academy ships. Fancy subjecting Cadets to the Scottish rugby team.” Tsk Tsk.” The smirk on the Captains face revealed all despite his words, he was simply pleased somebody actually knew what rugby was.

“Favorite song? That is going to depend on my mood but, if pressed, lets go with a song by an old band named Sabbaton. Called ‘To Hell and Back.’ Now, I told you mine, now you tell me yours.”

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair chuckled. “Usually at this point, I say this isn’t about me. But since you are the CO and all… I have no one specific song. I listen to a lot of different styles. The Klingons have a great band, ‘Good Day To Die’, but it is definitely not for the faint of heart. And I like a lot of really old stuff from Earth. Real McKenzies, Sex Pistols, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats. Oh, and a guy from mid-twentieth century America… Jerry Reed. Great guitar player. One of the best. Even better than that guy from Mardissian IV. And Reed only had five fingers on each hand.” he said with a grin.
