“What?” Dante asked her, a look of momentary confusion on his face. “I do not sound like that, do I?” His face spread into a grin as he realized what Nat was doing. “Oh Bub, her? You’re jealous about the gorgeous girl that came to help the gorgeous guy with our luggage? Don’t tell me you didn’t glance at the young guy, he was cute too you know, but the girl was very, very helpful. She was telling me about a new ride she thought I might like, they have giant eagles you can feed, and then ride. That was what we should check out tomorrow morning gorgeous.”

“Perfect. I will bring some stale bread to feed them like we do the ducks. Hey did you notice how hot she was? He was,” Daye continued ignoring his comment at her mind raced. “I mean their skin was flawless. Their hair shiny and thick. Dante they were not normal and it was not just them. How can you not notice? This place is like where the models come to retire at age 22,” she gestured out the glass window. “Do you know how hard it is going to be to focus here? How are we going to relax in a place like this?”

Dante turned Nat to face him and lifted her chin so he could look into her eyes, speaking softly. “I came here with you, my Mrs Knight and the woman I love with every part of my being. The only woman I want to wake up with, come home to and raise kids with is you Tasia. You know there is a way you can claim me properly” he said with a cheeky gleam in his eye and a smirk, and then he raised his left hand and wiggled that particular finger. “You could always put a ring on it.”

Daye looked at Knight The mystery of how everyone was stunning and perfect was forgotten. “I can do you one better,” she said moving up close. It was then she licked the side of his face. “I can lick you and claim you are mine,” she laughed.

Dante grinned at Nat and pushed her back against the wall of the turbo lift, and stepped in close to her as he dropped his head closer to hers while his tone became deeper as he spoke quietly. “For now Tasia, I could settle for us claiming each other as many times as we can in the next 24 hours. You think we can break the Guinness Book of Galactic Records for it?” Without letting her reply, he kissed her deeply and passionately, his lips looking for hers like they really were a newly married couple while his hands slid around her waist. He didn’t even care that the walls and doors of the turbolift were made completely of transparent glass looking out over the idyllic and perfect newlywed paradise of Erewhon. He was with his Mrs Knight.

FOUR HOURS LATER...............

Daye sat on the balcony with the breeze blowing the white silk robe around her legs as she sat looking out at the ocean. Daye loved the beach. Probably because she was raised in the middle of Siberia for most of her life where the sun only came out half the year and wearing only one wool sweater meant you were half dressed. “Mrs. Knight I have unpacked your luggage and brought up a fresh pot of coffee,” a voice said behind Daye. As she turned around Daye worked to control her expression.

The woman who had spoken was a different woman than had met them at the dock, but she was no less beautiful for that. With large blue eyes that sparkled and blonde hair that fell in a luscious sprawl around her shoulders, shoulders which were shapely and tanned, and almost completely exposed thanks to the swimsuit one piece that left little, just enough, to the imagination of what ample and perky assets she possessed. A slender waist and belly exposed by cutouts in the swimsuit, and hips covered by a silk sarong, with a high slit that allowed her leg to protrude provocatively when she stood with her hip cocked seductively, as she was now. She was stunningly beautiful, as was every other woman native to this planet it seemed, and youthful. No elderly people, nor even middle aged, had been seen at all in their brief time here. Everyone was in the blossom of young adulthood.

“Thank you. You mind if I ask you a question?”

“Anything Mrs. Knight,” she said smiling, and actually bit her lip ever so gently.

“Does everyone come from the same ethnic background here,” Daye asked. “I am not being rude but Erehwon seems to lack…diversity?” This was in no way what Daye really meant but she couldn’t just come out and say ‘where are all the ugly people’.

“Ah, you mean to ask where are all the ugly people?” The woman asked, without the slightest hesitation or look of shame. “It’s fine, the question is far more common than you might think. Oh everybody thinks it, but to actually ask it? We hear many different variations, but all of them are about the same question. “Where Are all the ugly people indeed.” The woman smiled, showing a perfect set of white teeth and dimples that looked cute as a button. “May I sit?”

“Absolutely,” Natasha moved her chair a bit out so that the woman had plenty of room to sit down. Her interest was more than piqued. This place looked like an add for Tinder: rich, young, and beautiful version only none of the people seemed keen to hit on the arriving guests. Genetically it was also unlikely to have this many attractive persons in one area.

Seating herself down close, very close, beside Natasha almost as soon as she had asked the question, the woman turned and looked at Natasha for a moment as if measuring her somehow. Finally, she seemed pleased with something and then looked out over the ocean where Nat had been looking. “They are out there,” she said, and pointed with one slender and delicate hand, perfect nails included. “Under the water, working and living out their lives under the sea of Erewhon. They are not permitted here, and we do not travel underwater either. Their world is not ours, and ours is not theirs. We cannot allow them here, for many reasons and we seldom talk about them in normal conversation. They are not the chosen, they are the people.”

“This resort is one of twelve on the surface of Erewhon. Paradise cities built to rise above the waves and treat our visitors to the best that our planet has to offer. Like this, we keep our native resources secure on the land, the animals safe, tree’s free of pollution. Most of our population, those that are not chosen live and work under the water. Don’t worry, they are happy, successful and provide themselves with everything they need, and us. Everything you see was mined underwater, the cities literally rise from the sea, and we have undersea farms in the Aquadomes.” As she spoke, it was obvious that the woman was intensely proud of what her civilization had achieved. “You won’t see it from the air or space, but a large portion of the sea bed is settled with our underwater cities. Once one of the chosen reaches 17 years old, we are moved from the city we are taught in and live in one of the cities above water. There are no children above the waves, they are of no use to us in the cities and remain with their families until they reach the Age of Revelation.”

Instantly Daye was on guard. The Federation respected different cultures but the idea that they would approve citizenship to a place that segregated their own left a queasy knot in her stomach. So can you explain more what you mean by not the chosen,” Daye asked in a delicate tone. The Age of Revelation seemed self explanatory at the moment and Natasha had no idea how long the woman would stay and talk. The more information she had to talk to Dante about the better.

“As for the Chosen of Erewhon,” she continued, “Those of us chosen to live in the cities are, perfect. Don’t look so surprised, we have spent many generations perfecting us.” she said, and motioned to herself, her body and her assets, with her hands. Not only was she beautiful, but as she spoke it was also clear that she was also very intelligent, perhaps not a warp theory scientist, but obviously not bred for her looks alone.

“So your society relies on Eugenics,” Daye bite her ip not to let the frown spread across her face. Throughout history, many sentients had embraced the eugenics programs. Sir Francis Galton, Nazi’s, Augments, and many others had proclaimed that selectively breeding traits within a society would better that civilizations population. No matter what the propaganda sold to the populace to gain the support it always ended in one group thinking they were superior to another and tried to eradicate the “lesser” group. If this was the case, Daye would bring this to the attention of the Federation.

“There is no Genetic Engineering on Erewhon,” she told Natasha, “but, you are a doctor. You must understand Genetic selection? Breeding selected traits for generations to produce a desired outcome? The Mintaran culture matches people with a survey as to their suitability for love and a relationship. We do the same, but with genetic markers and DNA tracing. Nothing is Engineered, conception is natural, selected.”

“Yes, but it is my understanding that the Mintaran’s actively choose to select or reject their mates. When you are talking about offspring it becomes vastly more complicated. You can’t really reject a baby,” Daye said. “I mean I guess you can by leaving them in the depths of your briny sea. So that is what you do? Leave the not chosen to your aqua domes?” Daye tried to select her words very carefully. The last thing she wanted was to insult the woman but that might not even be possible. Whatever her society was selling, the woman was clearly buying.

“The result of that, is those of us that are Chosen to live above the waves in the open air. We are the perfect results of our breeding, the desired few that make Erewhon truly the perfect civilization. We greet our guests, love them and each other, live in our great paradise cities and present all of Erewhon’s many great advances to the rest of the Federation.” She ran one hand up her shapely, tanned leg and grinned at Natasha, a particular look in her eye. “Wouldn’t you say I am perfect? You should be able to tell, you would live here with us if you were from Erewhon. You are stunning, Natasha. Your husband is a very lucky man.”

Beauty of Erewhon

“I wouldn’t let you go out for happy hour with him,” Nat joked with a half grin. As weird as this situation was the woman was a nobody. Just one of the chosen few who had been brainwashed into believing what the politicians in power had convinced them. “And thank you for the compliment. If a few months I will be not so gainly but that is bound to happen when you are expecting.”

The woman’s face fell sharply as she heard Natasha’s words. “As in a baby,” the woman said slowly.

“As in yes in about eight months. Right now I am calling it bean,” Natasha said leaning forward some looking at the bathroom door. She had not told Dante yet. She would during this week but she was still processing the news herself. After their fight two weeks ago who would have thought the topic would be about “their baby” the next time it was brought up.

“So you conceived on the planet,” the woman asked taking the role Natasha had previously as the inquisitor. “Are you sure?”

“Ummmm yeah,” Daye felt a rise of red fill her cheeks. “That waterfall excursions with Lover’s cove....well we gave it more of an X rated moniker.” Normally she would not be so forthcoming about the details to an absolute stranger but Natasha was just thrilled. The odds were so against her and Dante but they always were against them. This was just another time that Knight and Daye proved everyone wrong.

“But are you sure,” the woman asked laying her hand over Daye’s.

The action was slightly unsettling but Daye continued. “Yes, I am a doctor. I carry a tricorder with me all the time. I woke up on my birthday about eight days ago and had a feeling. Our tests are pretty accurate when you know what you are looking for. They are accurate at the eight-day mark in detecting human chorionic gonadotrophin.”

“I need an administrator in room Twelve thirty-four,” the woman said standing up. “I am so sorry Mrs. Knight but the planetary guidelines for entrance to Erewhon clearly state that we are not able to handle any children on the surface. It is rather unfortunate for you that your tests are so accurate. This happens so rarely. We actually have discussed passing a referendum on it but forcing prophylaxis on guests is seen as not romantic. It is also why our standard for staying on the planet is exactly two weeks to avoid situations like this. I am truly sorry.”

“You mean prophylactic,” Daye stressed the word. “Prophylactic deals with preventing pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. In the strict meaning and medical meaning of the word profylaxe means prevention of a disease and birth is not a disease.” The look on the woman’s face unsettled Daye. “I think you should leave now. Dante,” Natasha called out to him in the next room. He was across the room in the bathroom but it was not like he couldn’t here in less than a second.

“Security lock down the room,” a man said instantly appearing through the door.

“Dante,” Daye called out as two more men entered their suite.

In the bathroom, Dante would find that the room had been locked down as if it were a cell in the brig.

“It will be far easier for us all if you just cooperate but if not,” one of the men said approaching Daye. Looking at him she formed a fist and clocked him with a solid right hook to the cheek as he pushed her way off the deck. Snapping his fingers one of the two men grabbed Daye as the other pressed a hypo to her neck. Daye’s knees went out and she only remained upright because of the man holding onto her body. “Take her to processing but be gentle. This could turn into a diplomatic incident again.” Indicating for the rest of the room to clear out, the man now calling the shots straightened his tie and sat down at the table Daye was previously having brunch on. Once the room was cleared he said in a crisp tone, “security measures release,” and waited for the husband of Natasha Knight to confront him.
