“Wow… what made me join?” She shrugged and moved to the replicator. “What do you want to drink?” She glanced over at him as she moved, “Deka Tea,” she ordered the machine and smiled as the Bajoran hot drink appeared. “I guess I joined because it was better than more schooling. I mean,” she laughed awkwardly, “I hadn’t considered the Academy, but what can you do. Now I am in space and I get to fight and not get into trouble for it.” She leaned back on the counter to see if he wanted something to drink.

“Just a hot chocolate for me,” Fraiser gave a wry smile, “I can’t resist my sweet tooth.”

“The Academy was a bit of an oversight,” he agreed, “But not getting into trouble for fighting is always a bonus. Wherever you go. I grew up with three brothers, fighting pretty much becomes second nature when there’s so much testosterone around. My brother Tony nearly broke my nose once cause I insulted his ego.” Fraiser shook his head with a grin “You’d think we’d grow out of it… but… wellllll,” he guestured to his security uniform.

“Sanctioned fighting and permission to restrain. I like it,” she laughed. “And yeah, sometimes Officers can get upset if they feel slighted.” She laughed and brought him the cocoa and set it before him. Leaning on the edge of the table beside him, she sipped her drink. “Well, if you like fighting, there are some great sparring programs on the holos that lots of us use. And I’m always up for a good tussle now and then.” It then occured to her he had mentioned flirting when he had been caught. “I mean, you can even bring your new friend if you want. The one you were hitting on when the Officer busted you.” She winked to let him know she had a feeling the flirting comment was because it was exactly what he had been doing.

“Thanks,” Fraiser lifted up the cocoa and took a sip, sighing in pleasure as the sweet drink passed his lips. “I would love to take you up on that offer. As for my friend I don’t think she’ll be joining us,” he took another sip of his drink, hiding the mild embarrassment at her reading it so quickly, “She was just the pilot the Starbase loaned us, she’s probably back there already. But would the Officer make a sutible substitute?” He grinned mischeviously picturing how well that would go down in his head. The Officer would probably think he was a massive flirt if he did.

Ember laughed. “I guess it depends which ‘Officer’ you mean. Some here wouldn’t give you the time of day. But the Chief, if you asked, she would probably be happy to teach you a few things. Though usually the lesson comes from her insights as you lay on your back looking up at her bat’leth or pike. She can be vicious in the ring. So tread carefully and don’t go in with a big head. That’s all the advice I can give you there. I’m still nursing a backside lesson I got last week.” She laughed and sipped her drink. “But if you can’t find anyone else, I’m more than happy to spar with you. I’m not that great with a bat’leth yet, but I’m fairly good with a pole arm and more than fair with a knife.” She smiled and gave him a look that all but dared him to call her on the stats. She wished she could see ‘his’ file and what ‘he’ was good at. But she wasn’t high enough rank.

Shoot… she hadn’t even been aware that she was meeting a new teammate today. Life was full of surprises.

“The new one I ran into, I don’t know his rank or position he was in his uniform. And as for the Chief I wouldn’t expect her to go easy, she is a Klingon after all. I don’t think going easy is in their vocabulary.” Fraiser winked, over his cup as he took a sip of his drink. “I guess that leaves you, as my sparring partner,” He grinned, seeing the challenge in her eyes, and returning the look with one of his own, “I can see then if you’re as good as you say you are. I’m pretty neat with the knife myself you know,” he smirked letting her know he was teasing her, “Although, I must admit I’m better at hand to hand than anything else,”

He brought the cup up to his lips but paused his eyes catching sight of his hand, Lieutenant Commander Boja had done a good job in healing, there was no sign that mere hours earlier it had been bruised and broken. But it was still healing, and the doctor had made it clear he maintain light exercise on it until it was fully healed. “Tell you what, give me a week to settle in and get used to the routine of the ship and I’ll take you up on your offer,” He took the sip from his cup, surprised to find that he was looking forward to sparring with her and was disappointed he had to wait so long for his hand to heal.

Ember laughed. “Yeah, ‘soft n fuzzy’ and ‘Klingon’ aren’t exactly in the same vocabulary programs.” When he said that just left her, she tried to look stern but failed miserably, “Oh, so you think ‘I’ll’ be easy on you? Maybe I’ll go all Klingon on you and kick your backside anyway.” She laughed and shook her head at his apology and asking for a week to get settled in. “No worries. I can’t see it being a rush. It’s not like I’m going anywhere.”

She glanced at the door and frowned. “I wonder where she is, anyway. She was supposed to meet me here to talk about the third shift roster rotation. We change everyone’s shift every few months. It keeps everyone from becoming complacent. And while on a shift, your rounds will change for the same reason. It keeps everyone aware of the status of the ship, as well. And aware of the welfare of those on the ship. Sometimes we see things others don’t. So be aware of that.” She smiled.

“She probably got delayed on bridge… or something,” An uneasy feeling overcame Fraiser as he wonder if the or something had anything to do with him at all. “Although the rotations is a good idea, you can’t ever be too cautious. And it’ll keep us on our toes if our shifts vary from time to time.” He took a gulp of his hot chocolate, “I wonder which shift she’ll put me on first,” he mused thoughtfully.

His eyes wandered back over to the door. “Is the Chief usually this late?”

“She is a senior officer on the ship Ensign, She is pretty busy.” A voice sounded behind him. “Is there something I can help you with, Sir.” An average height man was standing behind Flynn. He looked to be in his mid 60’s, with greying hair and green eyes. He had several scars on his face. Instead of pips where a rank insignia should be, there were three sideways gold chevrons with three vertical gold pips.

Flynn put his drink down and turned around, a charming smile on his face, “I don’t think you can,” his smile widened, and he held out his hand to the man. His eyes shrewdly studying the man in front of him, lingering on the collar in particular. “Ensign Flynn, I’m here to check in, but as you can see…” he guestured around the office “… she hasn’t arrived yet.”
