Adam sat down in his new office nodding to himself as he looked around. While this wasn’t his first XO duty, having been an XO of two other smaller ships over the last 10 years, it was his first as an XO of a large, almost battle ship. Which seemed fitting given his background of being at the heart of nearly every single combat engagement that starfleet has engaged in over the last 20 years. He looked over at a picture of his fiance, who was killed over 20 years ago during the Battle of Sector 001. They were classmates at the academy and had only been engaged for a little over a week when the Borg came.

Adam sighed in regret then put the picture down in it’s place. A beep from his console forced him to look away. The computer was reminding him of a meeting of some of the senior staff in the war room. He took a deep breath then headed off to the meeting.

The meeting was only the next deck up, so it didn’t take him long to arrive. He nodded to the bridge officer then entered the war room to wait for the others to arrive.

DaVinci entered the room with a pleasant smile on his face. Stepping around the table and approaching the XO with his right hand extended and said, “Commander Threwn, I’m Colter, Chief of Intel, and next in line behind you. Welcome aboard the Saracen.”

Colter’s voice was rough, almost a whisper, but still clearly audible. He was solidly built, but almost dwarfed by Threwn’s large size.

Colter (CIO)

“Nice to meet you formally Commander.” Threwn replied, returning the offered hand shake. In contrast to Colters, Threwns voice was deep and soothing. “Chief of Intel and right behind me, should I watch my back?” he asked jovially.

DaVinci offered a genuine grin. “Not from me, X. I’m happy where I’m at. But I will let you know if someone else is gunning for your spot.”

Colter (CIO)

The next officer to enter the room would remind Adam of the Gorn if he had ever seen one of their species. Slender and reptilian, Gavain was a strange character. His face was akin to that of a lizard or a snake, and his entire body was covered in dark grey scales, including his tail. The Chief Operations Officer nodded slightly at the XO. “Welcome to the Saracen,” he spoke, placing his three-fingered hand to his own chest and bowing slightly. “I am Gavain, COO.”

His voice was a little raspy, a hint of a hiss in his accent as he spoke Federation Standard. The consequences of trying to speak a language meant for humanoids with a face that was definitely not humanoid.

Gavain, COO

“Greetings Gavain.” Threwn replied in welcome, he returned the bow in hopes that it was the proper way to return the greeting. He had never meet someone of this species before, and diplomacy was not a strong suit of his.

He gestured to the war room. “Please. We are waiting for our Chief Tactical officer to arrive then we can begin.” Threwn explained

Gavain smiled slightly, nodding briefly to Threwn. It was sufficient. “I am pleased to meet you, and to welcome you to this vessel, Commander Threwn,” he spoke, then stepped over to one of the chairs. He pulled the chair sideways and sat down, the base of his tail not being flexible enough to allow him to sit in a chair the way humans did. Chairs on Galdor always had a small gap near were the seat met the back-rest, for the sake of those with non-flexible tails.

Gavain, COO

Elmira entered the room, her hair slightly frazzled, as if she’d been busy with some previous excersion. “Commanders, Lieutenant.” She greeted, shortly. “I should hope I didn’t keep you waiting,” There was a slight apathy to her remark, despite her genuine intentions. Without further remark, Elmira crossed to the table, standing behind a seat adjacent o Gavain’s. Her gaze, slowly came to Threwn, a face she did not completely recognize. “Lieutenant O’Shea, you must be Commander Threwn.”

“Good to meet you Lieutenant, welcome.” Threwn replied kindly, “Please, have a seat.” He stated, taking a seat near the head of the table, but not at it.

“Well, simply, I asked you here to meet you and for us to get to know each other. I do not believe that I have ever worked with any of you before so this is a good opportunity do so before we leave the star base. Feel free to speak freely.” He added looking at each one individually he talked.

“So before we begin do you have any questions for me? Anything you want to know?” He asked. He felt that by opening up this Avenue of dialogue first, would put these officers more at ease, which in theory led to better relationships between crewmembers and more efficient command staff.

Gavain’s tongue flicked out and moistened his left eye. He was quiet for a few moments before he spoke up. “What is your favourite colour?” he asked, the corner of his lip lifting up slightly.

Gavain, COO

Midnight blue.” he replied simply, turning to look at the COO. “I’ll test you on that later.” He said with a smile.

-XO

“Do you have a background in operations, Intelligence or tactics?” Elmira inquired, arms casually folded over her chest. She recognized the officers gathered and wondered if Threwn had come from the same Crock-Pot of divisions.
