“Aye, Chief,” He said and began to turn around.

To the side of Harrison and Greiner, the air shimmered and coalesced into a form that was pretty familiar to most of the Sickbay staff. Greiner though had leaned over to set the PADD down and when he turned back, he was centimetres from her face. The Ensign cursed under his breath. “Geez, Cori! Can’t you give people a little warning?” he said, taking a step back.

Startled by the unexpected voice, he shot up ramrod straight so fast that there was an audible crack from his spine. Wincing at the pain, his eyes widened in surprise, wondering briefly how anyone could have entered his lab without having heard them. His confusion gave way to understanding as he remembered the briefing notes on the Saracen and her unusual crewmember

She flicked her long raven hair off her shoulders of her sciences blue uniform, gazing at Greiner with amusement in her electric blue eyes. “And I keep telling you, Shawn, to be mindful of where the emitters are. This is the safest place to appear, unless you want me sitting on your patients.”

He bit back a grumbling retort. “Have you met the new Chief yet?”

“Can’t say I have,” Dalton said, looking over at Nathaniel. She stepped closer and smiled, gazing deeply at the man even as she stuck out a hand. “Lieutenant Corinne Dalton, resident ghost in the machine, know-it-all, and sometimes medic, should you ever require an extra set of hands.”

“You forgot pain-in-the-ass,” Greiner said, feigning seriousness.

“A girl has to get her fun somewhere. You’re just too easy.”

He understood holographic science and, having grown up among Bolians was intimately familiar with holographic artificial intelligence, but there was still a degree of surprise at the level of complexity this particular hologram had achieved. He understood abstractly that she was the result of a digitized intelligence and not programming, but the reality still didn’t quite do it justice. Unlike many of his colleagues, he bore no ill will to the EMH system and quite enjoyed their efficiency, but this was reality on an entirely new scale. He mused briefly that his adoptive uncle Broht would be absolutely fascinated by the depth of character. He reached out and took her hand, shaking gently as he marvelled at the detail that so many holographic novelists neglected. Right down to the uneven skin pores. He was no psychologist by any measure, but he assumed that depth of detail to be a psychological remnant of self-image manifesting through holo-projectors. His voice held an edge of intrigue “A pleasure, Lieutenant. Doctor Nathaniel Harrison. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. Your personnel records don’t do you justice.”

Doctor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)

She actually laughed. “I dare say they wouldn’t. They’re a doozy at the best of times. Unbelievable the rest of the time. Though I suppose it depends on what sort of imagination you have.”

Greiner rolled his eyes a bit, though he seemed amused as he moved away. Corinne watched for a moment before focusing on the CMO again. “I pass through here regularly when I move in and out of the system. Just going to grab my emitter and get out of your hair, as it were.”
