She actually laughed. “I dare say they wouldn’t. They’re a doozy at the best of times. Unbelievable the rest of the time. Though I suppose it depends on what sort of imagination you have.”

Greiner rolled his eyes a bit, though he seemed amused as he moved away. Corinne watched for a moment before focusing on the CMO again. “I pass through here regularly when I move in and out of the system. Just going to grab my emitter and get out of your hair, as it were.”

He released her hand reluctantly, still marvelling at the detail and depth of character present in her construction. He wondered how much space the computer core must have to surrender to maintain such a huge data file. He narrowed his eyebrows with some confusion at her reference, his voice questioning “grabbing your emitter?”

For a moment, she was genuinely surprised, but after a fleeting moment Cori gave something of a mysterious smile and moved around Harrison to the back counter.

In the corner rested the device that her freedom hinged on. It was bulkier than the original and she hoped one day they would improve upon it, but for now Jarred’s creation was the one way she could be more than just a voice haunting the background. Holding it out in her hand, she gazed at the CMO with a ‘watch this’ sort of expression and then she shimmered. When she reappeared, Dalton was still wearing her uniform, but the device was attached on her arm. “I thought about fashioning somehow into a hairpiece or necklace, but that only works if I’m not in uniform. Otherwise, there are those pesky uniform code violations to worry about.”

Recognition dawned on his face. There were few fans of the EMH who hadn’t experienced the holo-novels created by Voyagers doctors in the 16 years since their return from the Delta Quadrant and he was familiar enough with the concept of the mobile emitter. “I apologize for my confusion, Lieutenant, I just wasn’t aware that there were any other mobile holo-emitters beyond that used by Voyagers EMH. I met him once, some years ago at Starfleet Medical. An interesting man. He had some very interesting theories on interspecies virology. I used some of his research on a Delta Quadrant species he’d encountered to develop some of my theories on transmission mechanisms…” he paused mid-sentence, realizing he had drifted off into what was an unfortunate habit of proselytizing about his research work. He had grown a little more aware of it over the years, but it did still occasionally rear its head.

A gleam appeared in her eyes as she smiled. “Our Chief Engineer collaborated with various sources to try to come up with something that would work for my needs. It’s not as sleek and tiny as the other, but it does the trick. I mean, after all, no sentient being likes to be in isolation. Messes with your head rather badly.” She smirked. “Though, I do appreciate being able to change my clothing at will. It’s a fun little trick.” She was focused on him rather intently, watching for all he micro-reactions that would tell her how he was responding to her statements. She didn’t like going on the defensive, but her situation often required her to exercise caution as people got to know her.
