Sinclair laughed out loud and said “Oh hell no!” and laughed again. “This ?” and he waved his hand about the office and, by default, the ship. “This was chosen for me. I was a Security Officer who made the mistake of asking if I could get additional training in mediation and negotiation. I thought it would help me diffuse tense situations. Turns out, some of the brass felt I had a knack for it, the psychology thing. Next thing I know, I’m in front of Admiral Turner who is explaining how we have a shortage of qualified and dedicated Counselors in the fleet, and if I would be willing to get that training then there were more opportunities to serve the Fleet and the Federation. You know, typical recruiter.” and he laughed again.

Cori smirked slightly, knowing how these things often went.

“Naw, Turner is good people. And she really thinks I am good at this.” and he paused and looked at Corinne. “I guess she wasn’t too far off. Got my Doctorate today. I’ve only been in this field a year and a half, give or take.” and then he paused and looked intently at Dalton. “I guess we have that in common, huh? Both in a role neither of us asked for.” and then, as had happened a few times in their interactions, Sinclair stated something that just seemed appropriate to the conversation. “But at least I can leave, if I want. I’m sorry that, for now at least, that option isn’t available to you. That must be a huge burden.” His voice held true sorrow, but not pity. It was more akin to a friend commiserating with a friend who hated their job and wanted to quit, but couldn’t.

OOC: Great writing, guys. Awesome!!! ~~Terry

OOC: Thanks, terry. :)

Had she been made of flesh and blood, Dalton probably would have knocked back the glass before her cleanly. Instead, she chewed on the inside of her lower lip and then sighed. “I keep trying to make peace with it, but how can I? Maybe before the Douwd trapped me in the system, but now?” She shook her head. “Now it feels truly like a prison and like any prisoner, all you can do is look at the outside world wistfully.”

“Making peace with something or someone requires forgiveness. I see no real reason why you would want to forgive anyone for your current position. And that is completely normal and rational. But what you can do is try and reach a level of acceptance. And that doesn’t mean you have to stop feeling as you do, Corrine. It just means that you reached a place emotionally and mentally where the resentment is no longer the overriding emotion. And once we get you to that point, then we can start on building a more positive emotional framework. One where the idea of hope isn’t buried under the negative connotations of your current situation. Make sense?” he asked and took a sip of his drink, looking at her intently.

“Sure. Everything makes sense when discussed hypothetically,” she said with a slight smile before waving a hand dismissively. “But this isn’t a counselling session and my problems aren’t what I’m here for. Last I checked, we were supposed to be celebrating, weren’t we?” Damn she really wanted to be able to drink this. And she could, just not here.

“Tell you what… if I promise not to tell anyone you smuggled real booze across the ship, how about we go to the holodeck where I can actually drink and pretend to taste what I holographically ingest. At least I’m not sitting here staring at the glass wistfully. I mean, it’s not like I can develop alcoholism,” she said with a slight waggle of her brows.
