He pondered for a moment, looking down into his drink before taking a sip “Not as much as most, I suppose. We travelled around a lot when I was a boy. Between my mother and father, there were a lot of assignments. We settled on Boliarus IX when I was 8, and other than the occasional interplanetary vacation and some joy-riding with friends in my teens, I’ve not ever really ‘lived’ on a starship. Certainly no Federation starships. Bolians tend to have quite a grounded philosophy about family relationships and they encourage stable home lives. I guess the roaming life just never appealed to me, despite the obvious advantages to my research. I don’t begrudge anyone that does enjoy spending their lives and careers roaming through space. I’m sure it’s a terriffic thrill, it’s just not my thing.”

Dotor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)

Sinclair shook his head and softly chuckled. “I’m not sure ‘thrill’ is the most common term I have heard to describe the emotions of being assigned to a star ship.” and the big man leaned back and placed his hands on is lap.

“You know, Doctor, I have spent my entire life around star ships. Not necessarily on board them, but I grew up in the ship yards. I have seen the framework being assembled, the hulls being laid, plating being welded. I have seen these ships go from nothing to launch. And to this day, despite my familiarity and intimacy with them… I still find them fascinating.” and he chuckled again. “I am aware that assignments like this are not for everyone, and not everyone relishes the idea of being confined in a vessel hurtling faster than light through space. But I would like to challenge you, Doctor. Even with all the ships we have, all the races we know, all the planets we have explored… those of us on board these ships are still a select few, Doctor. Not many individuals are given this opportunity. And while this may not pertain to you personally, I challenge to try and embrace that for may of those you will work with… indeed, be responsible for… I challenge you to see this as not just a tick-mark on their record; but as a great honor. And I also challenge you to try and reason why you were selected for this role as well. Because I can tell you with absolute certainty… you were not put on board this vessel just to fill a pip. There are hundreds of qualified individuals applying for every open position on board these ships. There is no shortage of candidates. You were selected for a reason, not as a place-holder.”

Sinclair, CNS

He frowned contemplatively “Don’t mistake my motivation, Commander, I’m here for the crew in whatever they need. I reveal what I do to you because you’re the one who is supposed to hear it. I wouldn’t disrespect the crew by making my particular feelings clear. As for my qualifications, I would respond by pointing out that I am an eminently qualified and experienced surgeon with a great many years of trauma experience. I was chosen for this assignment because I’m the best officer for the position. I have no doubt that I was the result of an exhaustive evaluation process by Starfleet Personnel. I also have no lesser a desire to excel in this post than I have any other. As Doctors, we accept from the day our oath is taken, that we can and will be assigned wherever we are needed. At the moment, my desire and Starfleets needs bring me here and I’m sure I’ll forge comfortable relationships as time goes on.”

Doctor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)

Sinclair shook his head and smiled. “No, no, Doctor. That isn’t what I was inferring. Apologies if it came across that way. What I am saying is that perhaps, just… perhaps… someone sees something in you that maybe you yourself don’t see. You see yourself as a clinician. A researcher. Both noble and respected paths, to be certain. But maybe you could be more? Not instead of… but in addition to. Have you considered that?” he asked as he looked at the CMO.

Sinclair, CNS

He put his glass down. He had apparently forgotten how stimulating Bolian tonic water could be. He made a mental note to make sure Rigellian tea was available in the sickbay replicator. He waved his hand dismissively “I’ve considered it, and I don’t dislike general practice, it just isn’t as fulfilling as my research. I think on the larger scale, the bigger picture of my interspecies research will have a more profound impact than any amount of stubbed toes and broken bones”

Harrison (CMO)

Sinclair cocked his head to the side and said “And lives saved? More profound than that as well?”

Sinclair, CNS

He shrugged comfortably, having considered the math involved many times “If I can perfect a universal interspecies treatment protocol, it’ll save billions of lives”

Harrison (CMO)

“And if you save just one while on board this ship, it is possible you can do the same. Our species doesn’t have the ability to see multiple realities or timelines like some do. But I’m sure you know that one person can make a difference, don’t you?” Sinclair asked somewhat pointedly. “I just don’t want to see your personal pursuit cause you to miss out on an opportunity to make another kind of impact. Does that make sense?”

Sinclair, CNS

He nodded thoughtfully, taking another sip from his glass, despite having previously rejected the idea of finishing it. It did do one wonders to occupy one’s hands. His voice was vaguely dismissive “I understand that many Doctors find a certain depth of satisfaction from saving a single life, and I certainly do appreciate being capable enough to drag someone back from the brink, but It’s not a hill I need to die on. Believe me, Commander, I do live in the here and now and when I’m on the floor, i’m 100% committed to my patients. I’ll always do what needs to be done”

Harrison (CMO)

Sinclair frowned slightly but said “I wold not doubt otherwise, Doctor. Again, I am simply trying to open new avenues of thought for you. Think of me as a road sign at an intersection, not a tour guide.”

Sinclair, CNS
