He was taken aback by her admission to a romantic relationship with the Captain. It was… unusual to say the least, bordering on fraternizing. Clearly Captain Knight was not so by the book as he had thought. He controlled all but a raised eyebrow before nodding along to the other information. There was always a ships hypochondriac, always a malingerer and always, always, always someone on the medical staff that had to be carried. He was glad there was a nurse in the ships gossip tree that could relate information and be a source for heading off potential disasters. He had been missing that aboard Starbase 91 and it had almost cost lives during an infectious disease outbreak. His response was considered, “Some of the Earth references may miss their mark a little. I only spent a few years there, in the Academy and then in a brief posting to Starfleet Medical. I was raised on Boliarus, hence the head” with a gesture to his shaven dome. he continued “I indulge in the occasional glass of wine and I do enjoy a little Saurian brandy from time to time, but it’s not often I can let my hair down, figuratively speaking. I am not averse to lizards, although there are precious few native to Boliarus, thus my experience is somewhat limited. I have an allergy to Vulcan plomeek root, oddly. We think it may be the legacy of a little Vulcan DNA some generations back. As for the superhero, we didn’t really have any growing up. Despite their reputation, Bolians aren’t particularly big on recreational science fiction literature. They tend to enjoy plays on reality for amusement and entertainment. I did study 21st century Earth literature briefly as part of my cultural schooling, but we touched on their ‘comic books’ only very briefly. I do recall something about a man rodent and a fellow jumping buildings. Tell me, would you recommend Nurse Longstreet as a solid candidate for Nursing Administrator? I tend to find passing some of the residents duties through the nursing chain adds a pleasant challenge for the nursing staff and elevating a leader among them who stands on a level with the residents gives them a measure of comfort that positively affects performance.”

“Well the cappy’s first born son is Bruce. He’s an Asian monitor lizard and a big boy at that. Don’t freak if you see him. Just call him like a dog or throw anything round. The damn thing thinks he is a dog. I blame Dante and Kelly for that,” daye sighed heavily. “If I had raised him instead of Dante and Kelly he would have been far more content to lie on a rock than feild a pop fly to deep center feild. Still,” she got a small smile, “you can’t pick how your kids are going to turn out now can you. This way,” daye said still leading the cmo to their destination.

Lt Natasha Daye. Medical

His mouth worked silently several times, unsure quite how to respond to this revelation. Naturally, a lizard would not be the Captain’s actual son, given that he was human. He wasn’t familiar with the monitor lizard, but assumed it was a native Earth animal and made a note to research it at a later date. Given his inability to form a coherent thought, he remained silent, noting she hadn’t answered his question

“As to Longstreet you can’t do better than her. In fact, she was the one that directed me to take you on this little field trip. She thought it would be good to get you into the thick of things ya’ know,” Daye said stopping in front of a glass door. Looking in you would see that the room was a large gym behind the glass sliding doors filled with a multitude of men and women going about their activities. “Ca’ mon,” she waved him forward and into the gym. She twitched her nose as the smell of workouts hit her. it was no worse or better than any other gym but it was the gym smell.

He nodded approvingly. He would make an event of it and ensure she understood how important and special this position was. With any luck, it would give him the heads up that was essential to any good medical establishment. He frowned as they entered the gym. The smell he found somewhat erotic, along with the bodies of some of those working out. He preferred to do his exercising on holodecks in a specialty program that reproduced the Bolian central entertainment complex in Boliarus City.

“Yo Daye. My dreams have been answered,” a security officer called out in a happy sarcastic tone.

“And yet I am about to show you how fast your daydream can become a nightmare,” she winked at the man. “This is Doc Harrison the new CMO. He will be doing the six-month physicals so you will not have the pleasure of me telling you to turn your head and cough but this nice gentleman,” Daye teased. The crowd continued with some low and good-natured ribbing she patted Harrison on the back. “We started doing it here in the locker rooms because it is just routine and it keeps the smell of feet out of the sickbay. Gloves and tricorders are already set up. Have fun and welcome aboard.”

He chuckled openly, his eyes wrinkling with mirth as he approached the line of officers and crewmen. Rather a dream come true for a single man with healthy appetites. Eschewing the gloves though, he picked up the tricorder and turned to the first man in the line, slapping the probe out the device and running it up and down his body as he addressed Daye “Much as I may feel some envy for our historical colleagues, who doesn’t appreciate cupping a stranger’s genitals after all, fortunately for these fine fellows the tricorder is far more accurate in detecting herniated tissue… Here..” he tossed her his tricorder as he moved to the next man and picked up another, gesturing to the other end of the line “wade in, Doctor, I’ll meet you in the middle”

=/\=Nah Tasha=/\= a voice came over her comm badge. It was definitely annoyed by the way the woman emphasized her name from Natasha to Nah Tasha. =/\= Bruce just bit Ralph…again. I don’t mind him coming over but you have got to find a way to control your son.=/\=

Natasha let out a deep sigh. If the voice on the other end could see the doctor’s face she would know that Natasha already was done with the conversation. =/\= And how do you expect me to do that? A muffle=/\= she snipped back trying to be pleasant but falling miserably short of the task.

=/\= Might help =/\=

Grinding her teeth Natasha looked at the man in front of her smirking. Rolling her eyes she licked her lips and tried again. =/\=How bad did he bite him? Do I need to come attend to a wound or did he just gum his head again=/\=

=/\=That is not the point =/\= Kalani almost yelled trying to control her anger.

=/\= Fine fine. I will send Dante. Daye out=/\= Natasha clicked off her badge not wanting to have this conversation any longer. Turning to Nathaniel she gave the CMO a quizzical look.

Clicking her comm badge Daye felt ready for a fight. =/\=Dante. You need to go deal with your son. He is being a dork again and Kane is all up my butt about Bruce biting Ralph. I am working so the ball is in your court. I told Kane you were on your way to pick him up.=/\=

Looking at Nathaniel, Daye hoped her boss understood. She had no idea if he had kids or not. “Do you have kids and if so what do you do when one of them bites another one but it is not his fault,” Daye asked almost rhetorically.

He looked on, rather nonplused… He had understood that Bruce was a reptile? or had he misunderstood? Confusion spread across his face for a moment before shaking it off. He assumed that with some experience all would become clear. It was apparent that she was determined to continue her duty shift though. He inwardly shrugged and turned back to the man he was examining, hiding the brief flash of pain in his eyes, his voice carefully nonchalant “I’m afraid I don’t. My former husband and I had considered it briefly, but our careers diverged and it never seemed quite the right time”

Doctor Nathaniel Harrison (CMO)

“That happens. Captain Knight and I tried the marriage thing twice but once at the altar, he was pulled off due to a bloody skirmish war and the second time I had a medical issue that prevented me from showing up. Right now we are one to one so a third time will be a charm,” Daye grinned holding up her ring finger. “It is all about finding your happy and supporting your partner. Dante always wanted to be a captain and trying to chase him around the fleet got old fast. If we got married he would have had a hella time trying to get command. Combat and deep space exploration is the quickest routes so I settled on the outpost and we met up when we could. It wasn’t easy at times but if you really love your partner nothing comes between that. You give up your dreams at times to follow yours and at some other time they do the same.” Closing her scanner she took a seat on the bench now that all her men were taken care of.

His tricorder paused momentarily at her words. He remembered all the arguments they’d had over subspace, all the screaming fits and rages, the passive-aggressive notes and pointedly returned gifts. He’d spent a great deal of time in the last couple of months wondering if he had given it all the effort that he should have, or if it were simply doomed because he found his work more fulfilling than his husband. He cleared his throat again, desperately trying not to shake his head to clear his blurring vision. He finished his final examination and returned his tricorder to the work station, his hand slapping the probe back into its housing perhaps a little more heavily than it needed to. His voice was deliberately light though “Relationships can try the patience of a saint.” He turned to the senior security officer, the consumate professional returning to his tone “You and your men are in outstanding shape, Mister. Do feel free to drop by with any stubbed toes or strained groins though.” The last, he followed up with a less than professional leering grin before gesturing to Daye “Shall we continue, Doctor?”

Harrison (CMO)

Daye opened her mouth to speak and then closed it slightly. Flipping the tricorder open Daye immediately began to scan the CMO. As a doctor, you memorized several acronyms: CPR, BMP, NPO and FAST. Face Drooping, Arm weakness, Slurring of speech, and Time to call 911. Since she was the 911 of the ship she just needed to figure out the details of the situation and work to fix it. “Do you have any nausea, stomach pain? How is your vision? Are you having trouble seeing in one or both eyes,”
Natasha began to triage him speaking a bit slower and articulating each word slowly as the machine processed the information from his body. He had the soft signs of a Transient Ischemic Attack. Daye could have kicked herself for not seeing them earlier. He has tried to lean back in his seat but misjudged the distance hitting the replicator and being knocked forward again. This semi-loss of balance was also just demonstrated as he slapped the tricorder into the holder. Immediately after that confusion had set in. The man did not use gloves and anyone with any medical knowledge knew that universal precautions were key in medicine. He deliberately did not wear them which had the possible implication of spreading any contaminants from his hand to the plethora of patients he just examined. This coupled with the way his mouth seemed to be dropping on one side showed the possibility of a palsy setting in. =/\=Sir we have a possible medical emergency in the gym. The CMO has the soft signs of a transient Ischemic attack. I am scanning him now,=/\= Daye informed the Captain. This was all she needed. To have the CMO stroke out ten minutes on the ship.

OOC: That’s not really where I was going with this. His vison was blurred because he’s upset about his recent divorce and hiding his feelings with affirmative actions, like slapping the probe back into the tricorder. The only place in 24th century trek we’ve ever seen gloves used is in surgery. If you fancy re-writing this one, I’m happy to speed-bump over it :P

Andy

He spun on her as she began speaking to him as though addressing a child. He batted her tricorder away as she stalked towards him, his eyebrows raising, first in surprise, and finally in irritation and indignation as she contacted the Captain. His voice rose in incredulity “What in the name of the First Mother are you jabbering on about, Doctor Daye? There’s not a thing wrong with me!” He tapped his own commbadge, intercepting her signal =^= Harrison to Captain Knight, I can assure you, I am quite well, although I am most certainly beginning to wonder if the same cannot be said of Doctor Daye. I’ll have a report for you shortly, Harrison out. =^= He tapped his commbadge again to close the channel before addressing Daye once more, his hands firmly on hips “Now, Doctor, would you care to offer an explanation for this silliness?”
