Flynn sat back in his chair and picked up what was left of his rapidly cooling hot-chocolate. Sha would call on him in her own time, but until then he intended to finish his drink before it turned into cold sludge and listen quietly to what the Chief had to say. It would give him a chance to learn a little bit more about the inner workings of the ship.

Sha listened to the Master Chief’s report. It was pretty basic and didn’t give any additional insight to the newcomer. When the Chief left, Sha stood up and went to the replicator, “Niranian Tea,” she ordered. The bitters help keep her awake and the cinnamon undertones kept her from going ballistic over little things at 0100 in the morning. Settling back into her seat, she tapped out her PADD to get Flynn’s record up. “Welcome aboard, Ensign. So what brings you to the far reaches of deep space? Choice or orders?”

Sha sat back and watched him. Some came to deep space out of choice, a decision made when their ‘wish list’ of postings was created just before graduation. Others didn’t want to be out here, but the luck of the draw dropped them into the deep dark without a second thought. The Security Chief was curious which it was for Flynn.

Fraiser’s head shot up from where he’d been watching his fingers flexing, enjoying the lack of pain in the movement, thanks to Boja’s talented work. “Choice,” he fixed Sha with one of his charming smiles, “I requested to be reassigned from my previous ship and so they had an available position here so I took it.” He shrugged notchulantly. “Was a win-win really, especially when I heard you were going to be my superior officer.” Not wanting to come off too cocky he settled for making himself look more at ease by leaning back on the couch as he watched her reation so he’d be able to play this meeting exactly right. After his botched one with the Counsellor, and near miss with Boja about his hand he didn’t want another screwed up check in on his first day.

Sha raised a curious eyebrow and smiled. Being half Klingon, it wasn’t exactly a charming look that made men swoon, but since it was instinctual, she hadn’t given it any thought in this moment. “Really… a ‘win win’ you called it? Because I was going to be your Supervisor. And how is that a win for you, Ensign?” His smile was charming, as far as she knew smiles. It was obvious why Ember was already drawn to him. But she trusted her shift supervisor’s judgement. She knew the girl was no yearling pup with doe eyes. But as she looked at Flynn, it occurred to her that many women on the ship would see that smile and be blinded by his charm.

It was a good thing for her she was immune to such ‘charms’. Besides, she was still trying to figure out what her heart had in mind in regards to another person on the ship. Flynn was certainly not on her radar. Her mind flicked back to the Ensign once more as she waited his answer.

“Your reputation proceeds you,” Flynn chose his words very carefully, he was already beginning to build a rapport and he didn’t want to lose it now. “Your name is spoken highly of, and from what I’ve seen, your officers all respect you. Which tells me you’re not a pencil pusher, and you’re a good leader.” He paused, thinking his next line through before he spoke it, “I’m already a good officer, but I want to be a great officer, sir, and to do that I need to be learning from great officers.” He flashed her a boyish grin. Hopefully she wouldn’t think he was just flattering her.

A single eyebrow rose, making the half Klingon look almost angry. “Reputation? I wasn’t aware I had one. But if you say so.” She wasn’t sure what to think of him, yet. He was either flattering her to get on her good side, or had something else in mind. She decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe him. “Well, like most newcomers, you will be given a mentor. Chances are, in light of my shift schedules, I’ll place you with one of the others on first shift for now. You will shadow them and learn the ship, the issues and flow of the Saracen. In time, you will do the same on the other two shifts. Then I’ll let you wander on your own and you can work your way up to shift supervisor in time. Most folks get a six month stint as a supervisor in order to get training for eventual Department Head mentoring and to give you a leg up when you transfer.”

She gave him another once over. “Is that acceptable to you?”
