Elmira was not a woman of sympathy, having been raised in the apathy of trouble. Although, Mike’s perturbed demeanour sent red flags spiking through her mind, breaching her façade of detachment. His behavior was that of a toddler; a dangerous combination of disassembled thought and impulse that could lead to destruction. He was a liability to himself in this stage; anxiety a weapon greater than any she’d ever seen.

Concern-laden features were masked by innate professionalism, as Elmira struggled to maintain her calm exterior. He was getting worse. “Yes, of course.” She assured, contemplating the hallway before them. “We’re nearing the shuttlebay, now.” Coming to a crossroads, Elmira gestured him down the left. Out of precaution, she trailed just behind him, observing his movements carefully. “Do you want to talk about it?” She asked, the words burning up her throat. She was not a counselor, her degree in the art of destruction rather than healing, but if it would appease his anxiety she would do what it took to ensure he would not harm himself.. or her. But he was only one person, and Elmira could sense the entire ship’s growing apprehension.

His pace quickened a bit, not quite a speed walk, but a walk with purpose. Directly towards the way that they originally came to the hopefully open area. The tight grip on his dufflebag he was holding on his right was easily able to be seen, like he was carrying a hefty bag despite it being incredibly light with only some clothes in it now. “It’s not really a good memory ..” He trailed a bit, trying to focus on his words rather than the vivid memory that kept creeping up no matter what he did. He could hear the sounds of everything that had happened at that time from the disruptor fire hitting the walls and through the windows to the shout of commands his leaders would give. “But .. ” He felt like he should say something if anything .. she was kind enough to his request and interest behind her name, he could at least tell her something about his past, right? “It was.. a warehouse back home on one of our colonies along the DMZ near the Cardassian Union.. It was supposed to be simple we were just watching a small new warehouse that we had set up which was supposed to be a school later on. Some Cardassian raiders decided they’d rather take our supplies instead of trading for them so things got a little heated and before we knew it .. we were already shooting at each other.” He kept his gaze mostly on the floor to see if it would help get rid of the apprehension of looking at the walls and doorways. “We dealt with their initial group with minimal casualties, but.. it seems they were only the talkers. The rest of them were already on the hill and we had to fall back into the building. We had to run after a while because we couldn’t hold it .. a lot of us didn’t make it back and seeing the doors and the hallway here .. for some reason reminded me of that time. There wasn’t anything we could do .. They took everything and left. Weapons, food, supplies, all of it.” He bit the inside of his lip wishing there was more than he could do aside from escaping with the few that made it out with their lives.

The shuttlebay approached from the right, its grey doors a welcomed sight. Elmira cocked a crooked grin at Mike, swaying her head towards the doors. “Looks like we made it in one piece, kid.” She wasn’t positive how much younger Mike was than her, if at all, but that didn’t matter. “After you,” She bowed, gesturing to the parting doors despite her back’s scream of protest. If she could make him laugh, maybe it would settle some of the disquietude.

Not in such a dramatic fashion, but as soon as he crested those doors he had let out a small sigh of relief. He was still on edge, but at least this was a larger, not so cramped area. It only took him a second to catch his breath, but he immediately started to survey the area just to make sure nothing was waiting for him. He still couldn’t help the unease that sat with him..

Nothing jumped out to bite the new officer and the bay was eerily quiet. Crates of boxed supplies were stacked tidily along the sides of the bay, leaving the center area open except for the shuttlecraft sitting dead center.

Mike’s story echoed in the back of her mind. She could picture the horror the young man must have faced when staring directly at the enemy. Cardassians were not known for their bartering, nor their hospitality..but that did not erase the emotion that resonated with the memory. Blinking, Elmira pushed the thought away, her attention drawn to the eerie silence of the shuttlebay.

“Do you want to sit down?” Elmira gestured to the crates, where they could rest in their shadow. As elevated as his anxiety had been, she doubted his energy was brimming. Although, perhaps it was not an uncommon incident for Mike and he had learned to cope with the strain such emotions had on his mind and body. She couldn’t be sure.

Mike stood there for a moment slowly adopting somewhat of a defensive stance for some reason as he looked around the shuttle bay. It was quiet .. too quiet. Vastly different from when he arrived not very long ago. “No … something’s wrong here.” He felt naked without a phaser, but knowing he had his knife helped a bit. He didn’t know what was going on with either his thoughts or the ship and it was almost overwhelming to just hop in to the shuttle craft and just run, but he didn’t want to abandon where he was stationed, he had only just got here. How would he help anyone if he ran away? It was probably one of the only thoughts he had that could keep him somewhat centered.

Scanning the bay, Elmira crossed her arms at the bottom of her ribcage, as if shielding herself from lowered temperatures that didn’t exist. “Are you feeling any better?” She asked, ignoring the lack of white noise around them. She hadn’t seen a shuttlebay as empty as the one they stood, then again, Elmira spent most of her time on the bridge where the hubbub of life eradicated any sliver of silence.

He cautiously started walking around the perimeter, creeping, slowly. Watching ever corner, every shadow until he could find something that something that was wrong. It was busy with activity and conversations not long ago when he arrived and had the lucky opportunity to run into Elmira. He was actually kind of elated in ways being able to run into her, but everything was the opposite now for some reason. It was quiet. He was paranoid of the quiet room. Too easy to set up an ambush of sorts. Nothing seemed right about anything at all. Her voice interrupted his thoughts for a moment and he replied in a hushed voice. “To be honest .. not exactly. Something’s just not right, I can’t figure it out ..” He kept looking at the corners and didn’t glace in her direction at all as he spoke. He scowled trying to figure out what why it was so silent in their room. He reached behind him and waved for her to stick close. For one .. he didn’t want to be alone .. and for two, he didn’t notice any weapons on her either so he wanted to make sure that she was in range in case something came after her.

Ensign Mike Gareth (Security)

The bay remained empty, Gareth and O’Shea didn’t find anything in their search. It was if after seeing to Gareth’s arrival, the shuttlebay crew had dispersed to other duties. Even finding the bay so empty though didn’t decrease any of Gareth’s unease. O’Shea would also start to have feelings of unease and agitation, whether it was due to proximity to Gareth’s paranoia or her own was unknown.

OOC: I’ll try to keep an eye on this while I’m on LOA!

O’Shea felt her heart quicken, as if she had been struck by an idiopathic disease in the form of agitation. Furrowing her eyebrows, her calm slowly began to ebb away. Instinctively, she reached for her phaser. Nothing. Concerned someone had stolen her phaser off of her, she shot a pointed glance at Mike. Him–Elmira! A voice in the back of her mind pulled her from the dark thoughts that had begun to cloud her judgement. Don’t be foolish! She told herself. Taking a step away from Mike, she sucked in a deep breath. You didn’t equip yourself this morning, remember? It must have been their proximity; she’s spent too much time in the dangerzone of Mike’s paranoia..it was beginning to infect her too. It was the only explanation she could come up with and it wasn’t his fault. Betazoids were empathic creatures, they took on the emotions polluting their environment. That had to be it.

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” She said. Whether she was trying to convince Mike or herself was hard to tell. She didn’t want Mike noticing her uneasiness, it wouldn’t help him if the person trying to lighten the mood was experiencing the same anxiety. “It might be first day jitters, Gareth. Everybody gets them. Especially when they’re in a new environment like the Saracen.”

Her heart pounded faster.

“Maybe we should move on..” She suggested, tucking her hands behind her back to avoid rubbing her wrists, as she often did when in an uncomfortable position. “Everyone else has returned to their duties, we should do the same. If you’re not ready, maybe a meal would he nice? Something to fuel you up. Perhaps that will help.”

Elmira never rambled, but Mike had no way of knowing that.
