“Probably not. It would certainly make Christmas awkward… not to mention disciplinary hearings.” Sinclair said with a chuckle. After a short pause, he said “So let me ask you this. If your parent’s careers were always the priority, why did you choose to follow the same path? Last thing I wanted was to end up working in the shipyards like my dad did.”

Enina glared at him as she processed his question, but after a few moments, sighed as her face softened slightly. “Starfleet is all I know,” she retorted, although not quite as caustically as she had spoken previously. She added somewhat under her breath, “I didn’t have any better ideas.” She blushed slightly as she realized, with a slight annoyance, that he was actually managing to pry some information out of her.

Sinclair looked at her, his face passive but with no sign of judgement or criticism. “I can see that. I can’t say as I wasn’t tempted to stay home and work like my family always had, but thankfully circumstances helped me along.” and he made a few notes. “So let me ask you this. If Starfleet is all you know…” and he smiled in a friendly conspiratorial manner, “… and you had no better idea; tell me… do you enjoy your job? And by that I mean… does it make you happy?”

Sinclair, CNS

Enina’s eyes were on Sinclair as he made several notes and she felt that twinge of discomfort come back in full force. While she hasn’t said anything that wasn’t known by anyone who had seen her growing up, she still just didn’t like it at all. Sinclair’s smile results in a scowl from her as she considered his question. It took longer than she would have liked to come up with a response and, finally, she just shrugged and replied, her voice as neutral and even as she could manage, “I like tinkering with things.”

Royal nodded. “Never had a knack for the mechanical side of things. Just not in my wheel house. Much respect for those that do, though. I mean, without Engineering we wouldn’t have the ship, right?”

Sinclair, CNS

Enina shrugged. She was tempted to leave it at that, but she was beginning to figure out that a verbal response was expected. “I guess,” she said, noncommittally. A slight flash of deviousness went through her green eyes as she continued, “probably more useful than tinkering with people.” She raised an eyebrow as she looked at Sinclair expectantly.

Sinclair chuckled. “Absolutely. But the hours are better and the office more comfortable. So there’s that.” and he pushed the PaDD aside after making a final notation. Looking at Nox intently, he said “Ensign, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you.”

Sinclair, CNS

Enina’s face portrayed sheer surprise at Sinclair’s words as she involuntarily leaned forward, resting her forearms on her legs.

“You’re… welcome?” she stammered, thrown temporarily off guard by Sinclair’s statement. “But… what for?” she questioned, not willing to leave it unspoken.
