Moving to the full-length mirror, Nat looked herself over and spun around a few times. The south forty seemed to be in order but her midsection definitely looked like she had not seen a sit up in a few months. As her eyes drifted to her north forty they stopped immediately on one section. “Dante,” she said in a slow drawn out speech. “Do I look more.....round,” was all she could say. Her mind was fuzzy like she was waking from a hangover and trying to piece the bits together into a cohesive story. As she spun around Dante would not be able to miss that somehow in the middle of the night a certain fairy had visited that all men dreamt of after the age of sixteen and replaced the tooth fairy.

He stopped and looked at what she was referring to, and had to admit that she was right. “Well, you definitely seem to have been blessed overnight in more ways than one. Twice blessed, I’d say but,” he moved to her and gently turned her around to face the mirror again, standing behind her so he could wrap his arms around her and put his hands over her belly softly, but also so he could whisper in her ear. “Baby, yesterday morning when we woke up this wasn’t here. Or at least yesterday as I remember it, unless you ate a whole damn bunch of bacon sandwiches when I was sleeping. You’re the doctor my girl, why would you have this,” and then he raised his hands to her seemingly newly acquired assets, “or these in just two days? Epic level bloating and gas? You need to listen to me and trust me, something isn’t right.”

“Ascites or IBS but I feel fine,” Natasha started to self diagnose. It was then she took a breath and placed her palm on his cheek. “Dante I want this too. God, you have no idea but this isn’t what you think. It can’t be,” Natasha pressed her lips to his in a soft kiss. She let them linger for a moment longer than necessary. Mainly to get her emotions under control. If she didn’t take a moment she would start to cry. Having children meant everything to Dante. He always spoke of a family. That was always in their plans but life often threw you curve balls and some things you never got a second chance at bat for. You picked yourself up by your bootstraps and found a new normal. Letting her lips leave his she swallowed hard and looked up at him. “I will never stop trying but it has been two years of constant trying. I knew it was a one in a million chance now and I have been off all birth control for the past two years. I even lied on the paperwork everywhere.” Leaning in she wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest. It always felt good in his arms. No matter what was happening to them if she was in his arms then Natasha belonged to Dante and that meant her world would right itself.

“So you can see it too,” he said to her gently as his arms circled her and one hand rose to softly stroke her hair. “I thought..” he couldn’t finish the sentence, he had thought having children was going to be impossible for the two of them. “How, Tasia?”

“I took you off all contraceptives a year ago when we boarded the Saracen. I have been off them since the Outpost and it didn’t happen,” her voice caught in her throat. “I am sorry this happened to us. I am sorry I did this to us. If I could change it I would but I can’t. Please don’t leave me,” she said barely above a whisper.

“Stop.” His voice was firm, but not angry. It was far from angry.

“I know we talked about having a family but I didn’t give you a choice. I don’t know how this happened but right now I feel like we should be happy but all I feel is trapped and an overwhelming sense that if you let go I will not get you back,” she said feeling a welling up of emotions. Her chest was getting tight and her body felt like she was struggling to breathe but the image in the mirror spoke of nothing but a loving couple, holding each other in its reflection. Natasha tightening her grip over his arms instinctively as if she was preparing for him to let go. She should have felt happiness or sadness but somehow all she felt was an overwhelming sense of fear and suffocation. It was not about the baby though. She knew this feeling was more primal. Like she right at the stage of panic yet there was no reason to panic or be upset. They were in a beautiful hotel without a care in the world. Dante was with her and they had an entire two weeks of vacation to enjoy each other.

“There is nothing to be sorry for, you did what you could to make a family for us, something we wanted forever. How am I ever going to be angry at you for that? I wouldn’t change this for anything. Baby, I love you, and if by some miracle we are having a baby and that isn’t a bad reaction to bacon sandwiches I have just become the luckiest man in the universe.” He dropped his head to hers and gently kissed her temple. “I’m not leaving you, I have never left you and I never will. No matter what, you are my girl, my only girl.”

Deep in conversation neither Nat or Dante noticed the door slide open. Neither of them noticed the man and woman that entered the room with their lunch trays laden with food. She heard the wife begging her husband to stay. She heard the end of their conversation and had to do something. “I’m not supposed to say this but it will be okay. He doesn’t have to leave. He can stay here with you,” the woman said softly staring at the tray as she spoke. Too many times she had seen this scenario play out. It always broke her heart but maybe just maybe it would give this couple hope that their future was not as bleak as they thought. “Just try to enjoy the time you have and make the decision that is right for you both.”

Natasha instantly went rigid in his arms. She didn’t understand what the woman said but something told her not to let Dante go. As she felt Dante pull from her arms Nat spun around quickly. “No no no no,” she said softly. Her breath now started to have a panting sound to it. It came in small puffs as her brain furiously tried to focus on what the heck was wrong with her. None of it made sense. Her stomach was doing flip flops but it was lunch time. All she had to do was sit down and eat to make that go way. Natasha felt like she was n a dream yet nothing except her anxiety felt real. Taking a deep breath she found her calm in his eyes. They centered her and instantly calmed the swell of fear to dissipate like a wave on the sand. He had that way with her. The ability to settle her with nothing more than a look.

Dante turned and looked at the pair, then down at his fiancee, raising her chin to him and smiling. The pair couldn’t see it, but his smile hid the look in his eyes that only Natasha would see. The look spoke of firmness, a determination and an anger that she knew from their arguments and of dealing with difficult alien diplomats. It spoke volumes that he was about to do something, and he expected her total compliance because he knew what was best at that moment and wasn’t going to debate anything.

It was then that her anxiety melted away completely and was replaced with curiosity. Dante was not standing before her with all the calm and patience of a man in love. He was standing there with the look of a man with a plan. The look in his eyes said get ready. Over the years she had seen it numerous times. A few of them were adventurous. One or two had been an emergency but the vast majority had been playful. Dante had planned on doing something fun. She also had just exhibited a bizarre anxiety attack so maybe the look was him attempting to assure her today was going to be amazing.

“I love you,” she said softly leaning her face into his hand. It was her way to say without words she would follow him anywhere. The gesture had an intimate feel almost as much as a kiss. She was used to moments like this with him. Finding ways to express a loving gesture in public view. Having him as a captain and ranking officer meant she could not stick her tongue down his throat and bang one out in the supply room as they did as cadets or ensigns. So over the years, she had found other simple ways of showing affection such as pressing the side of her foot against his when sitting across from him. She joked it was her way to hold his hand. Pressing her cheek into his palm was her version of a hug. Once the wait staff was gone, she would express her affection for him in a more private form.

“See my love, I can stay. I’m not going anywhere.” He let her go and turned to the pair, and nodded his thanks at the womans reassuring words as he walked to her and took the tray from her, then turned and took a step towards the table. “Let me get you some coffee Nat, I think we both need a break.” With those words Dante let one end of the tray go, resulting in a loud clatter as the plates of food and pot of coffee dropped to the ground, shattering. In the same movement he spun back towards the woman, lifting the metal tray in both hands and connecting the flat surface with the side of her head.

Daye stood there a bit wide-eyed and raised one eyebrow in response to his action. The clank from the impact reverberated throughout the room punctuated by the thud of the woman slumping to the floor in a heap. When her head didn’t bounce off anything, Natasha opened her mouth to speak but saw Dante moving onto the second person in the room.

He didn’t watch what happened to her after that as he dropped the tray and spun on the shocked looking man, throwing a short punch at him up under his chin with the aim of taking him out in one movement. It worked, the mans head snapped back and he fell unconscious on the bed behind him with Dante standing over him making sure he wasn’t getting him, fist clenched, then looked back down at the unconscious woman. Seeing she was out cold as well, he shook his hand and looked at Natasha. “Ow, I forgot how hard a mans chin is.”

Natasha half strolled half sauntered over to Dante. This was not the first times she had seen him in a fight nor was it the first time she adminstered some TLC afterward. Taking his hand she rubbed the back of his knuckles gently. She wasn’t worried about a break. Dante had hit enough people to know how to put someone down in the most humane was possible. The guy would have one helluva stiff neck but no lasting damage. “I thought you were a gentleman who treated everyone fairly,” she said slowly working her fingers over his hand to work the sting out. “You clearly showed him,” she gestured with her head to the man on the bed, “preferential treatment over that woman. The guy landed on the bed,” she looked up at him not sure what caused the outburst in her typically mild-mannered soon to be husband. She wanted answers and knew given enough time Dante would provide one.

He took her hand and looked at her firmly. “This isn’t our hotel room, we are some kind of prisoner here and by the looks of you, we’ve been here a while. Do what I say baby, we are getting out of here. Don’t argue ok, just do what I say. This room is probably being watched with camera’s.”

“What,” she said looking at Dante as if he had grown three heads. Instantly she understood now what was happening. As if putting it together in her head Natasha let out a deep moan and let her shoulders sag. “Ughhhh. You turned down fun time with this,” she gestured at her body in a swirling motion, “for one of those escape room things. No wonder you have me dressed like some cat burglar,” she let her arms flop down to her side.

“Dante I really don’t want to do thiiiiiisssss,” she said as Dante did not give Natasha a chance to rouse the participants. Instead, he had taken her hand in his with the strength of a vice grip and headed to the door. She stumbled a few steps but his height allowed him to lift his hand slightly so that she retained her balance all without breaking his stride.

Pulling her with him, he didn’t stop for anything in the room and walked to the open door, walking straight out into a long sterile white painted corridor with doors closed on each side. “When in doubt, always go right,” he said, and began to walk.

“When in doubt don’t leave your five hundred credit a night honeymoon suite,” she quipped back. “Baby I know I am usually the one wanting to do these hair-brained schemes but can’t we just go back to the room,” she half begged. “We get enough drama on the ship. I don’t need a suspense-filled vaycay,” she said half the word and was cut off as Dante pulled her down another hallway.

“I’m getting us out of here, whatever happened they must have removed our memories. Tell me if you don’t feel right baby. We have to be quick.”

“I tried to be quick but you wanted no part of it,” Daye said leaning against the wall Dante had his back flat to as he peeked around the corner. Her breathing showed she was exerting herself more than she should have for this type of activity. Putting two fingers on her wrist she took her pulse counting the beats. It was slightly elevated but still in normal limits.

“Can we get coffee after this,” she said feeling Dante reaching behind him for her hand. As soon as his fingers intertwined hers the sounds of klaxons began to ring in the hall. It wasn’t deafening like on the Saracen but it was something you did notice.

“Well that is new,” she said looking up at the small camera’s starting to emerge from recessed nooks at the top of the walls. “They did not have those when we did this with Lily and Duncan. Did you get an add on package,” she asked slightly concerned at the scope of this activity. With Rhodes and Lily, it was simple. Get out of a locked room in a set period of time. This version seemed to want to to the escape concept to a whole other level. Why Dante wanted to do this crazy game again was beyond her yet she had dragged him off to do random stuff over the years too. She would do this with him for the next hour or so but the rest of the day was going to involve her butt in the sand on a beach.
