Dante rose from his desk after checking the time, fetching a fresh coffee from the replicator and then moving to the window that looked out from the Saracen’s Ready Room. With the departure of Harrison, a new CMO was taking over and that meeting was due in just a few minutes.

He took a sip of the hot liquid and waited, the quiet pleasant after the last hour of doing reports and paperwork.

Captain Knight, CO

It was the first time she’d ever been on the bridge and Maji looked around wide eyed, nodding a greeting to anyone who looked her way. She’d been restocking the meds closet when orders to report to the Captain came in. She’d handed the project over to another officer and had left sickbay immediately. Hands smoothed the front of her uniform as she stood outside the Ready Room and palmed the chime. After all, you only got one chance to make a first impression.

“Enter,” came the voice of the Captain from the other side, and the doors slid open instantly to admit her. At the window to her right, Dante stood looking out and as the doors opened, he turned to her and smiled a greeting.

“Lieutenant Junior Grade Maji, welcome to my Ready Room.” He moved away from the window now and motioned to the chair in front of his desk with one hand. “Please come in and take a seat, we have something to discuss.”

Captain Knight, CO\

Maji took a seat in the chair indicated, all the while running the last few days through her mind. Had she done something untoward that the CO had caught wind of? No, that wasn’t it. She was an officer who had no problems going by the book in normal situations—and nothing had been out of the ordinary lately. Did he have concerns about her research? True, the tank she’d had built was filled with water and water weighed a great deal, but engineering had assured her the deck plating could handle it with no problem.

Wondering what Knight wanted to talk about, Maji gave him a direct look. “I’m happy to be here, Sir, but I don’t have any idea what this might be about.”
