“It was my father’s favourite,” she said simply. When her drink Dalton lifted her glass and then took a small sip, followed by a longer one. She leaned back in her chair, drink in hand and gazed deeply at Sinclair for a moment. “See? Now I can taste the drink. It might be simulated, but it’s something I can process. And this drink is rather nice.”

~Corinne Dalton

“Well, I’d hate to think you were choosing crap drinks to simulate for your own tasting. That’s just be tragic. And then I would have to worry about your mental state.”

Sinclair, CNS

She laughed. “So you’re not worried. Good to know,” Cori teased, taking another sip.

Leaning on one arm, she gave him a curious glance. “Who is Sinear?” Cori asked gently, slightly wary of the answer. It was a risky and probably very personal question, and she certainly didn’t want to cause pain by asking it, but… he mentioned the name and so she felt it at least safe to ask. He could brush her off if he needed to.

Sinclair smiled… albeit a bit wistfully. “Sinear is Scots Gaelic for Grandfather. Mine was pretty much the only real family I had growing up. That Marine medal on the shelf in my office? That’s his. His former Commanding Officer gave it to me right before I left for the Academy.” and he took a long drink and slowly set the glass down and stared off into nothing for a moment. “I bet he’d be laughing his ass off right now… me. A head doctor.” and he laughed. “But I know he’d be proud, too. So there’s that.” and he took another drink. “He passed just before I left for the Academy.”

Sinclair, CNS

“Ah, I’m sorry. It’s hard to lose someone you’re really close to, especially as a young adult,” Cori said with understanding. “I’m glad you have good memories of him. And I thinking he’d be proud of you too.” She knocked back more of her drink, but was appreciative of it rather than just drinking hard to get drunk. Such as it was.

~Corinne Dalton

“Thanks, Corinne. But having friends helps. And having good friends who are he only ones to sit and drink with you on one of the biggest days of your life really add a bit of frosting to the cake.” he said witha broad grin and loud laugh.

Sinclair, CNS

The smile didn’t extend to her mouth, but her electric eyes lit up slightly. “You say that so nonchalantly,” she said as she turned her glass in one hand. “But I just realized that I can’t remember the last friend I actually had that wasn’t a romantic involvement.” The warmth that spread through her was entirely an emotional response and naturally not from the alcohol. “You’ll tell me when I’m not being a good friend, then, right? Because I’m rather out of practice, if I ever truly knew how.” It wasn’t like she had let herself get close to people all that often in her life. Intellectually, she understood that she had suffered so much loss that it made connecting difficult and each subsequent loss made it all that much harder to connect the next time. But here she was and it hadn’t been all that difficult. Maybe it was because he was a psychologist who understood how to cut through people’s walls, or maybe he was just a nice person and she appreciated him for seeing her truly as a person. Whatever the reason, Corinne realized that he was in fact a friend, and while that was scary, it was a bit exciting too. And excitement was a bit rare in her life these days.

A twinkle in Sinclair’s eyes matched the smile that crossed his face. “Lass, I’m Scottish. If I don’t think you are being a good friend, you will most certainly know it. As will most everyone around ya, too.” and he laughed heartily and then took another drink.
