“The sensors show the gravimetric distortions can be mapped to a certain degree and are consistent waves though they are oscillating in an unpredictable manner. Running them through the computer to see if that can explain why,” Kalani said tapping the console.

In this region it appeared that the close proximity of the dichromic nebula and Class 4 Pulsar were what was causing the strange oscillations that rolled over the distortions that were normal to the Bretaka Nebula. The strange distortions were emanating from the pair.

GM Nosferatu

“The oscillations it seems are because of its close proximity of the dichromic nebula and Class 4 Pulsar even though these oscillations are normal to the Bretaka Nebula,” Kalani read off the results from the console.

As the Science team was studying their readings on the distortions and discussing them the ship suddenly shuddered and explosions could be heard dimly through the walls indicating that something was breaking somewhere. The lights and power dimmed in the labs as emergency power took over.

=/\=Jarred=/\= Kalani’s hand instantly went to her comm badge. =/\=Commander we are on emergency power here in the labs=/\= This statement was going to be obvious to him but it also served a second purpose and one Jarred would instantly understand. He was the chief engineer. Nothing happened on this ship he wasn’t aware of including the fact that Kalani above all else worried about him. The distant explosions could be anything. It could also mean something was happening in his engine room and that something could mean he was hurt or injured. As long as he replied it would assure Kalani he was okay and doing what he was trained to do.

Cori swore under her breath, such as it was. “Luckily for me I’m on my emitter,” she muttered. She was now acutely aware that moving in and out of the system would be a bad idea for the time being. But she had a good while of battery on her emitter. Unfortunately, it made her more vulnerable. Should anything happen to her emitter outside of a holographic space, well, she was screwed.

While Kane made the comm, Dalton eyed the data. “This nebula… if they are interacting against each other, and we can’t predict the distortions, we really should just get the hell out of here. Also, the less everyone acts all weird, the better for me too, generally.” She wasn’t keen on being the only sane one aboard. “The bridge is bringing in the probe. At least I can get closer. I think. Not sure how that radiation might effect my emitter though.”

~Corinne Dalton

“Agreed. That is why if anyone has to go tinkering with it and it’s not the CSO I will do it,” Kane said in a neutral tone. “You are right. We have no idea how to fix you if something goes wrong but I am just plain old flesh and bone. Medical can fix me with a wave of the wand or replace anything that is broken. I can also wear a suit that hopefully can shield out some or most the radiation. It will let me get right up on the thing and medical knows what to monitor on me to see when things are going wrong.
Also if you get hurt or into trouble, you would need the chief engineer to fix you and right now we need him fixing the ship. He can’t devote himself to one crew member. I can take any old doctor to patch me up. Guess that means I might have just drawn the short straw.” Reading the reports from the bridge, Kalani monitored the probe entering the hangar bay.

Cori stiffened, trying to not look too offended. It was a question of how to handle this awkward situation. Kalani clearly didn’t know or understand, but that was the case for most of the crew. Perhaps this was one of those opportunities to start fixing the situation. “You can’t fix me, Ensign. I’m a sentient being, just with unusual… parameters. I might not be able to die exactly like you but I can cease to exist. And not even Commander Alindor can fix that.” Whew! She even managed to say his name neutrally, too. She was quite proud of herself.

“Yes and,” Kalani looked at Cori utterly confused by her comment. “Of course you can cease to exist. Why would you assume I would think otherwise about you?” Kalani was not upset by Cori’s statement but trying to figure out what Cor was actually talking about. She knew the story behind the woman. Jarred had told her everything.
Not wanting Cori to misunderstand her words meaning, Kalani tired again.

“Do you know what I do for a living?” Kalani’s tone was inquisitive and not the least bit angry or hostile. “Cori, I specialize in strange organisms living and thriving in strange habitats. Don’t take offense to this but we are all just animals on a basic level with the need to survive at all costs. While I admit I don’t understand your physical make up one hundred percent accurately, you are clearly sentient and the one thing all sentient beings have is an instinct for survival.” Kalani let her words hang for a second.

“When I said fix you it had nothing to do with making you what you were in the past. I don’t think anyone can actually fix you and put you in an organic body but who the heck knows. I am not a fortune teller. Fixing you was simply an accurate assessment that your physical needs to survive are met by engineering and not medical. Fixing me involves the biological DNA coding for Guanine, Cytosine, Adenine and Thymine. Fixing you involves the engineering coding for perception, problem-solving, feature learning, and knowledge representation. Whether it’s your neural network or my circulatory system, if either of us got hurt we are still gonna bleed out in our own way. The difference is Jarred is the only one that can fix you and there is a team of doctors where any one of them can patch me up. Forget any personal hang-ups you have right now and think logically. We have no idea what the probe is or what it could do to anyone on the ship. Based on that who is more easily fixed? So as I said early who is easier to treat if you prefer that word over fix if one of us gets hurt.” Kalani looked at Cori hoping her point was coming across the way she intended. “It’s me because if I go down and the ship runs into an issue Jarred is not making a choice between saving five hundred lives or one life. You really want to put him in that situation and have that hang on his conscious?”

=/\=Sir, Permission to head to the shuttle bay to monitor the probe with you=/\= Kalani asked her boss over the comm lines.

Regardless of who went, their was a job to do and Kalani just needed to know who was doing it.

While they waited for Graham to respond, Dalton kept an eye on the readings.

~Corinne Dalton

It was apparent that the bridge was able to finally find the correct frequency for the force field around the probe as the leaking of the radiation tapered off. It could now be studied if the residual radiation was neutralized in the bay or protective suits were worn.

GM Nosferatu

Hearing a beep on the console Kalani looked at the readings. Letting out a deep sigh she visibly relaxed. “Turns out they were able to neutralize the radiation so the question of who is going to glow in the dark is a moot point,” Kalani said in a relieved tone grabbing a small bag with a few sensors in it. “Ready to head to the hangar?”
