“Missing her hurt too much. So he displaced it,” Cori surmised, though a lot of that was personal experience. Emptying her glass, she signalled for another. Was that her third now? The bonus about doing it this way on the holodeck was that she could partition herself slightly. She didn’t have to check for the correct answer, even though it would be there in a microsecond if she wanted it.

twirling her empty glass, she gazed at it while she spoke. “It wasn’t just Jarred, you know. There were others. And I know it’s a risk, every time. But… no one sticks around. After awhile, it’s hard to believe anyone ever will. Because my situation isn’t about to change without a drastic and possibly damaging risk. And either way, that’s a lot of baggage for anyone to take. I’m not convinced anyone would want to. And I wouldn’t blame them either.”

Sinclair looked at her closely for a long while and then said “I will. Now, don’t get all wound up… I am not proposing anything romantic.” and then he smiled a broad and warm smile. “I know… I know… you’re shattered. All of this -” and he gestured broadly to himself with both hands, ” - at your fingertips and you can’t do anything.” and he laughed out loud. “But what I would like to be… is your friend. And this isn’t newly minted shrink extraordinaire Doctor Sinclair talking. This is just plain ol’ Royal.” and he held out his hand, palm up, on the table. “So? Will you be my friend? I know I sure as hell could use one.”

Cori adopted a lopsided smirk. “Oh, I don’t know, that could be a big ask,” she teased. Resting her arm on the table, she scrutinized the psychologist. “But, Doctor Sinclair, I would consider it a privilege. I mean, you already have an idea about all the baggage and if that hasn’t scared you away yet, then I’m not sure if anything will.”

“Nope, nothing. We Scots are a stubborn people. Don’t like to admit defeat. Just ask the English.” and he laughed. He then took his glass and raised it to her and said “A toast! To new friends. May we both last to be old ones, too.”
