Over the main comm came a message. =^=Engineering to Bridge. Ensign Narssu reporting from main engineering with a status report.=^=

-Ens. Narssu, Engineering.

OOC: Hey people, thanks for carrying on while I have been occupied with a few things.

IC: The turbo-lift opened as the message from Narssu came in and the Captain walked back out, it appeared that whatever had been affecting him before, seemed to have let go of his mind, at least for now.

=/\= Engineering this is the Captain. Report =/\= he said as he made his way back to the centre of the Bridge and nodded to Threwn.

Captain Knight, CO

“Welcome back Captain.” Threwn said, returning the nod. He stepped aside to give the Captain the center.

-XO

As he did, the comm chirped and the voice of Alindor came through.

=/\= Captain we are about to head in, we have the others going through decon and my team and I are going to see what we can find out here. I will let you know more once my team and I have some ideas of just what this probe is. =/\=

Dante scratched his chin and looked over the consoles at the Science Station on the Bridge.

=/\= Commander, it looks like we have radiation on the deck surrounding the shuttle bay. I want Security to make sure those decks get evacuated and isolated, I am putting force fields into place to contain the radiation, emergency exit points will be at the standard locations. Keep me informed of what you find out about that probe, what is the status of Dr Knight? =/\=

Nodding to Ops, force fields were brought up to contain the radiation. Dante turned to O’Shea. “Lieutenant, get down there and assist Security with evacuating and isolating that deck. Mr Sinclair, perhaps you could lend your assistance. We may have some people down there in need of your services if my earlier state of mind is any indication.”

Captain Knight, CO

Elmira lifted her attention to the Captain, her fingers falling idle to the sides of the tactical array. She nodded and took a step back, subconsciously flattening her uniform. “Sure thing, Boss.” O’Shea cocked her head to the turbolift, gesturing Sinclair over if he was ready to move out.

Lt. O’Shea, CTO

OCC: Sorry I had to fix the split.

IC:
“Permission to enter the bridge,” she asked the security officer on command by the door. This was a stupid protocol and took years for her to remember however since she was married to the captain she had to set a good example. Natasha stepped on the bridge once the officer replied and walked up to Dante. “Sir, I have a stop gap procedure for the radiation affecting the crew’s mood swings.” Holding up the hypo she continued to explain further. “This is not a cure but the Cortropine will increase the dopamine in your brain and Melorazine to help you relax. You are just acting touchier than normal because your adrenal glands are saturating your body with more adrenaline or noradrenaline than your body can handle.” Pressing it to Dante’s neck, Natasha altered her gaze between the tricorder and her husband. “So feel less…pissy,” she asked Dante with a half-smile.

Lt. Natasha Knight CMO

Dante let her administer the treatment and then looked back at Nat. His face was completely straight, but she would recognize the softness in his eyes that was meant for her alone. “I have an unknown probe that irradiated my ship in my shuttlebay, my ship is in a dangerous nebulae where rogue Klingons and Cardassians duke it out, and my officers are edgy. No, I am not less pissy Dr Knight, but I do feel better.”

Natasha was not the captain nor had any desire for command positions past the one treating those on her ship. This allowed her far more ability to express emotion publically. “Fifty-fifty split,” she said in a low tone. “Sounds like a typical day at the office.”

Lowering his voice slightly, he asked her, “You said the adrenaline and noradrenaline is more than my body can handle Doctor, what about the children on the ship?”

“While it won’t kill them I am concerned. Unlike us, they are still so neurologically immature they can’t reason so it’s like a tantrum that never ends. I would suggest all the teachers get the day off after this is resolved,” she suggested glibly. “On a serious note, I do have an idea.” The swish of the pneumatic doors signaled the arrival of someone to the bridge stopping Natasha’s conversation.

Captain Knight, CO

Graham returned to the bridge with a shrug. “There’s 6 different officers down in the shuttle bay. I think I can be more effectively used back up here… Sir.”

Graham CSO

“Graham just the man I was hoping to see. I have another problem we need to address,” Nat replied in a semi relieved tone. “I have isolated a concoction of Cortropine and Melorazine to take the edge off of the worst of the symptoms but like any drug it will wear off. The radiation from the nebula and probe have flooded the ship which I know your teams are working on. My problem is how to evacuate it from the body.” Pulling up a PaDD, Natasha sent a file to both Graham’s station and the Captain’s PaDD.

When they opened the file they would see a schematic of the human body’s adrenal system. Highlighted would be a section of the brain and a section of the kidneys. “Okay, so I know this is my field and not yours so I am going to try and keep this as simple as possible. When we entered the nebula our bodies reacted immediately to the radiation and just like the ship, as one area went down it started taking other areas with it.” Blowing up the hypothalamus area, Natasha started to explain. “So the instantly anger and irritability came about because our flight or flight response went into overdrive. The amygdala is like the warp core of emotional responses for our body. It is an automonic response meaning we can’t control it. When triggered it creates a sudden and intense unconscious emotional response shutting off the cortex or reasoning center of the brain, making it hard for you to think clearly about the situation. We all know this. Moving on,” She tried to be as concise as possible but was not in the mood to field questions which is why she started with the anatomy review.

“The second problem is our adrenal glands. Now we all know from BIO 101 that when you panic you get flooded with adrenal. That comes from here,” she blew up a section of the kidney area highlighting two small organs above the kidneys. “These are your adrenal glands. When your amygdala panics it sends a message to the adrenal glands that pumps out the adrenal to get your body moving. We feel this with increased heart rate, increased respiration which each person then processes as ‘I am ten foot tall and bulletproof’ or cowers in a corner. Either response affects our rational thinking. So in short we have just been focusing on the thalamus area but we have had enough exposure to the radiation our bodies adrenal systems have flooded us with adrenaline. With as much adrenaline as we have in our systems even when you clear the ship of the radiation the crew will be dealing with the physical feelings associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder (PD).” Natasha knew everyone was going to be hyperfocused on getting the ship in working order but this was one time she needed them to understand medical was a priority and not studying some random probe.

“Now the innermost layer of the cortex, the zona reticularis, produces androgens that are converted then converted to produce sex hormones,” she let the words sink in before explaining more. “What does this mean ladies and gentlemen? I don’t know. I can tell you that it may mean we will all feel like just staying in fat pants and watching movies alone every Friday night for a few weeks or we will need to have a maternity ward built for the influx of Saranian’s that will be here in 9 months.” Now that she probably had the attention of everyone on the bridge crew for their own reasons, Nat continued.

“I can’t strip the body of the adrenal overload. That would be worse than what I just shared. What I can do it try to slow the production so our bodies process less. I just can’t keep up with hypos so we need to find a way to distribute it through the vents so we get a slow and concentrated does of the meds in the hypos in aerosol form. Medical may not be able to mass-produce as much as we need so maybe science could help,” she looked at Teller.

From the station he sat at, DaVinci listened to Daye’s explanation. He could feel himself getting more frustrated every second she spoke. “Dammit, doctor, you going to keep blathering, or you going to give the rest of us one those coctails you just pumped into the captain?”

Realizing how harsh that sounded, as soon as it came out of his mouth, the CIO took a deep breath and said in a less aggressive voice, “My apologies, Dr. Daye. This radiation is effecting me more than I thought. Thought I had it under control.”

“Nah you just zeroed in on the effects to your libido. Trust me. You are not the first and its the reason I ran onto this bridge like my arse was on fire,” she winked at him. Moving over to him, she injected the concoction into his neck. “I am only telling the command staff this because I am pretty sure the ship mutiny if they knew what came after the anger and frustration which would be…more anger and frustration.” Natasha had to laugh even if it was in bad taste. At times you could either laugh or cry and it it happened there would be time to cry later.

Colter (CIO)

Graham looked at the biology, despite his science background the close up of the organs weren’t particularly helpful. The biology of it would have to be the responsibility of the medical officer he would have to apply the only thing he had that was useful in this field, brain power. “Adrenaline is fairly short lived in the body. Couldn’t we apply the reverse of a depressant SSRI. Instead of inhibiting the serotonin, why don’t we block the adrenaline uptake sites.”

graham

“Well because shutting systems down can cause a lot more headaches. Hormones control most organs in some form or another. I did try to the depressant route but the amount needed made people trialing it so sleepy it was like they were sleeping off a bender. I can come up with the right dosages its mass producing the dosages and making it into an aerosol form I am needing help with,” Natasha clarified.

Lt. Natasha Knight CMO

“I can stabilize almost any chemical into an aerosol. We can do dosing by increments. Tell me what amount you need in the body and I’ll convert it to particles per million and by time exposed. We’ll let is permeate the ship and then filter it out. In this case people will be dosed by duration of exposure as opposed to amount in the air.”

Teller

Adam sat silently as the crew discussed the situation.

“Be sure to cover the whole ship, not just the living areas, but the more obscure areas of the ship as well.” Threwn stated. This was effecting him, he felt angrier then he normally did, flashbacks of various battles kept creeping into his mind. He did what he could to suppress them.
