Rico never minded late shift, on most occasions. It allowed time for thought and practise, it was quiet and very seldom were issues happening when most of the crew slept. It just meant that he was here and not in his quarters with Ally after their transfer from the Ogawa. As he inspected the weapons that had been chosen for this round of routine checks, he smiled.

At one point, he had been a member of the Saracen’s crew as the ships Chief Tactical Officer before taking on the role as Chief of Security on the Ogawa. Now, with Allison taking the transfer to the Saracen he had taken on the role as ships Armorer and moved with her. After their experience on Orion, Rico wasn’t letting Ally be without him now.

Beside him the console beeped.

=/\= This is the Captain, we are enroute to Aldebaran III at maximum sustainable Warp responding to a distress signal. They have reported radiation, explosions and system failures before we lost contact. Aldebaran III is a large Federation colony with billions of inhabitants and significant orbital shipyards, we will lend whatever assistance we can. Our estimated time of arrival is 30 hours, I expect we will need Science investigating the radiation, Engineering working on restoring their systems and Medical to stand by to treat wounded and support their local hospitals. I want Security to stand by in case we discover malicious intent and to help evacuate those in need. All departments are to begin preparations for supporting Aldebaran III. =/\=

Rico read the message and smiled. “Well, I think that means we need grenades.” He slapped his hand on the desk and stood, looking at the assorted weapons and hoping, just quietly, that they were not going to need any of them.

Lt Rico Vanhall, Armorer

Cargo bay left to the science heads, Sha had gone to security to update the rotation roster to account for extra man power. After sending messages to those the changes affected, she headed for the armory. Arriving about 30 minutes after the announcement, she smiled at Rico as the door closed behind her. “I’m surprised your woman lets you work this odd shift, Vanhall. You know there are others capable, right?”

“But there is nobody as capable,” Rico joked, slapping the battery pack into a Phaser rifle and checking the status indicator.

She and Sinclair hadn’t gotten to the point where shift preferences were necessary. But she imagined once dedicated to one person, you’d want to be with them all you could.

Lt Sha Triton
CoS

“We’re both Starfleet Officers and have jobs to do, Sha,” he used her first name more informally. “Besides, working a few shifts apart means that we appreciate whatever time we do get together that much more.” He grinned, whatever thought he had in his had was certainly a pleasant one.

“So what happened with that probe thing? Did we end up putting a torpedo into it?”

Lt Vanhall, Armorer

Flynn had always trusted his intuition. So when he had heard that the Captain was requesting Security was on standby, he had had a hunch that she would be at the Armoury and had headed there himself. He carfully hid his smirk behind his mock concentration on his work. Finishing off the weapon he had been cleaning under careful supervision (no thanks to that irritating Counsellor), he subtly moved closer to his two superior officers, intent on learning a little more about the current situation if he could.

Sha laughed slightly and shook her head. “I think she lets you so she can get a break from you and a good night’s sleep,” she laughed at her counterpart and took the now prepped weapon from him and stored it in the cabinet behind him. He had two more in front of him, and Flynn had one he was cleaning. Quick calculations taking into account who was on duty, she was pleased to see the exact number of phasers gone from the next cage down. She teased the Lieutenant, as he did her, but he ran a tight weapons locker.

Seeing Flynn sidle up slightly made her grin to herself, glad he was willing to listen. “Nope, still intact. Captain kicked it out the door after the science folks got what they needed. I can tell you I’ve had enough decon clearing to suit me for a while enough. Ridiculous contraption contaminated half the deck!” Her Klingon side rearing up a moment in her growl of contempt. “Good bye and I’m glad.” She shook her head then calmed enough to slug the Lt’s shoulder. “Come on… hand me the next one. Unlike you,
I haven’t got all night.”

“Oh that was low,” Rico smirked, but handed her a Phaser from the locker.

She laughed and winked behind his back at Flynn to include him in on the banter.

Sha
CoS

Flynn smirked back at the CoS as he swiped his cloth around the barrel of the phaser rifle, careful to remove any residue on it. “At this rate even with help I’ll finish before you old man,” he teased a touch of competitivness sneaking through his tone as he idicated to the weapon in front of him where Flynn only had the one he was holding. In the easy atmosphere Flynn found it easier than normal to forget he was around superior officer and losen his guard a fraction. Especially as he was carefully schooling himself to hid the disappointment that nothing more dramatic had happened to the probe.

“You know I can open the next locker and have those weapons dismantled and recalibrated, right?” He said with a complete seriousness to his face that didn’t hold much longer than an instant before it broke into a smile. “What’s this old man business? I’m not even 40 yet and in my prime.” Rico’s physique and snug uniform tunic definitely supported that claim, the man clearly looked after himself rather well and even being new to the ship was already known as one of the most regular and hardest trainers in the gym. Rumor had it, he had taken a step down in position from Chief of Security on another ship to take on this role at the Captain’s request.

Flynn smirked “You’re older than I am,” he said using his smile to hide the jealousy at the other males physique. He wished his own would look like that. However, much he’d trained, or protien he ate, his fast metabolism and lean build meant most people couldn’t tell he worked out. He still looked good, but standing next to people like Vanhall he didn’t look as good and he hated it.

Picking up a hand Phaser, he quickly dismantled it into its major components and began to wipe them down. “What were your scores like in Phaser compliance training?” He asked Flynn and cast a sidelong glance and smirk at Sha. “I hear that they made the Academy tests easier to hit since the newer graduates kept missing the beginner targets and Command wanted the scores to at least look threatening in case we get invaded.”

Lt Vanhall, Armorer

“It wasn’t my stongest area,” Fraiser said a little of his cockiness dissipating as he wondered what that look meant for him, “But I was still at the top of my class. My hit rate was about 90%.” He finished wiping the last component of his Phaser and started putting it back together again, his hands moving with practiced ease.
