Cori returned her gaze to him and then gave something of a small grin, nudging Lacey forward towards the winding path that went down the embankment. “Careful, parts of the dunes are less stable, shifting,” she warned as she took the lead, but made rom for him to ride alongside her.

“Noted,” he said, and moved Cash to catch up to her, then returned his eyes to the path ahead of them.

After a few moments, she looked appraisingly at Knight. “If you couldn’t do the things you always do, what’s the one thing you would miss the most?”

~Corinne Dalton

Dante scratched his jaw in thought for a moment, then took a deep breath as he juggled the options. “One thing, that’s not as hard as it sounds to me. Things I’d miss are coffee, starting my day with music or relaxing at the end of the night with a whiskey and a movie. But the one thing that I’d miss, every single day without fail, waking up next to Natasha.” He looked at Dalton and shrugged a little. “I did that for more than 15 years while I was posted places she wasn’t, now, we are together. Everything is empty without her, I’ve been there, although I always had the knowledge it wouldn’t be forever.”

Dalton knew her own response to that well enough to tamp down on any external reaction. While time had passed, there was something still lingering from her previous relationships that was not settling well with her.

Their pace staying steady, he looked at Dalton and paused slightly. “What was it that you missed the most?”

She looked over at him, her gaze wistful. “Ballet,” she said softly. “I can change my appearance and dance. I’ve even performed on stage for… someone. Even made up my own choreography, but while the holoemitters can simulate the strain on my body and the effort it requires, there’s no physical evidence of my dancing. No soreness, no bloodied toes. Nothing that proves I had done what my body was simply not designed to do. It’s… strange. Unsettling.”

Dante’s eyebrow rose slightly as he listened, it wasn’t quite what he had expected but after she finished and he processed it, he had to chuckle softly as he looked back at her. “Of all the things you could miss most, it’s the physical sensation of pain?” He breathed out and shook his head, looking at his own hands but his slight smile remained. “I guess the pain is a reminder of our mortality, our physical existence, yes? Without it, I can see how it would be unsettling. Some people might get a god complex about that after a time, no physical pain, unlimited power. You would have to be remarkably mentally strong to deal with that.” His smile didn’t change, and he hoped the compliment would lighten the mood slightly.
