Corinne drew in a breath and then slowly exhaled, puffing out her cheeks slightly. “That night I came to see you in your quarters, after Jarred had come to see me and I was really upset. Well, before he arrived I had been going through some crates looking for something.” Cori paused could feel the strange anxiety in her, both real and entirely a figment.

Eyes cast downwards. “The crates have held all my personal effects. Stuff that was put into storage after the Douwd trapped me in the computer and everyone thought I was gone. This was before you suggested I get my own quarters. I was going through them to look for something and I can’t find it. There’s a missing crate and I’m not sure if it’s just been misplaced or lost entirely. But…” Cori took a deep and looked up at him, on the verge of tears. “They’re gone… my ballet slippers. I can’t find them anywhere. And it’s so stupid because they’re just slippers but, Royal, they’re the only thing left of my life before Starfleet. Of life on Ajilon. I know I’ve grown and changed and maybe it’s wrong to hold onto that, but I don’t know. I’m not sure if I can give them up. Or if I even want to.”

Without missing a beat, Royal simply said “Why would you want to give them up? They are a treasured possession. We humans are funny about sentimental items from our past. Seriously, have you seen my quarters? Those models are so impractical it’s ridiculous. But I want them, so I pack them up every move and make sure they are safe. Because I like them. They remind of the past, and the people I have lost. It gives me a tangible reminder of them. And where I come from.” and he cocked his head at her and smiled. “It’s perfectly normal, Corinne. You’re only human.”

She smiled though she was fighting back tears and shook her head. “I mean, before it seemed really silly given that I had no where to even keep personal objects. But now that I have my own quarters… it’s changed. I just don’t know what I’ll do if they are lost forever, Royal. Haven’t I lost enough already?” she said quietly, flicking her gaze off into the cozy bar that she had decided she was quite fond of.

“You are ruining my buzz, Corinne. Knock it off.” he said with a smile. “We can only lose everything once. And you haven’t lost that yet. So.. chin up. And let’s go on a scavenger hunt!” he said enthusiastically and stood up… and then fell back into the chair. “Tomorrow. Let’s scavenger hunt tomorrow. After I sober up.”

Cori peered at him with a grin. “How drunk are you really, and are you going to be hung over? I’m going to need you at your best if we’re going to find a random crate on a starship.” She leaned forward, a spark returning to her eyes again. “Then again, I always did like mysteries and games.”

Sinclair smiled and said “Really drunk. Very hung over. But if I can play a full regulation rugby match in the heat after drinking more than this, I can certainly help you find your missing crate.” and he slowly stood up. Managing not to fall over, he smiled at Corinne and said “See? All better.” and slowly turned to begin the long trek to hi quarters.
