Newly dressed out in the Security uniform from his fislrst incarnation as a Star Fleet officer, the big Scot made his way to the shuttle bay. As the doors slid open, he walked into the large space and saw the security personnel, those not on duty anyway, milling around and asking questions amongst themselves. “All right. Questions at the end. Fall in, everyone.” the brogue rang out and the assembly feel into ranks in short order.

“Now most if not all of you know as the ship’s Counselor. That was yesterday. This is today. As of now, I am your new Security Chief. And before you ask, yes, I am qualified to hold the job. That’s what I did before I was a Counselor. So… where do we go from here? Let’s start with the basics. I expect each of you to do your job, and do it well. To that end, I want you to take a minute and absorb one very important lesson.” and he paused for a second to make sure they were listening.

“I know a lot of you… hell, probably all of you can fight. But fighting isnt what our priority is. We are keepers of the peace, first and foremost. So before you engage your fists, engage your mouth. And before you engage your mouth, engage your brains. You are no dummies. You wouldnt be here if you were stupid. So… use those brains. Assess, evaluate, plan, react. In that order, every time. Understood?”

She had finished Medical and figured her DH was the next logical step. Again, having run Security for so long, she hadn’t bothered to look at the information or the schedule, figuring she wouldn’t be on it right now anyway. So it was a complete surprise when she walked into the room, saw the backs of everyone in formation and realized she had walked in on morning briefing or a meeting. The resounding, “Yes, Sir”, was all she heard as she came in.

Sha let the door shut behind her and tilted her neck to see around the heads in front of her to who was at the front of the room. Her half Klingon features suddenly very visible to the person in the front of the room if he was looking. She bit her lip to keep from gasping as she saw Sinclair at the front of the compartment. The shock looking almost comical on the woman’s face.

Sinclair didn’t flinch or pause, but it was obvious he saw the new arrival when he spoke. “And just so we are all clear. Lieutenant Rah-Triton is back with us. Her position in the department is not a demotion. It’s a side effect of some of the demands Star Fleet puts on us from time to time. We go where we are needed. Sometimes when we come back, our former roles aren’t there. So we do what is best for the crew, the ship, and the Federation. If you don’t think that happens… well, remember… I was the ship’s Counselor yesterday.” and he laughed. “Additionally, the Lieutenant will be my Second. Anything coming from her, assume it comes from me. Now, shift assignments. Bravo, Hotel, and Kilo teams. You have enjoyed the luxuries that first shift provides. You all have third watch effective immediately. All of you are dismissed, go get some sleep, okay? Alpha, Charlie, and Echo. You move from second to first. Delta, Fox, and Golf. You get second, moving from third. We will rotate shifts every seven ship days. Amy questions or concerns, find me or the L-T later today and we can discuss. Dismissed.” and his gaze locked onto Sha. “Lieutenant. A word, if you please.” and he moved away from the departing security personnel towards a vacant side of the hanger.

Sha straightened up and let the meeting finish. She was in the back, and grateful for it, because she couldn’t hide her smile as his mention of her return sent a murmur thru the crowd. A couple folks turned around but most held his gaze.

Once dismissed, several flocked around her to hug and welcome her back with hand shakes and back pats. She took a moment to shoo them off with laughter and promises of drinks and stories when time permitted.

Once the room was void of all but the two of them, she leaned back on the wall and crossed her arms. “So… I am sure there is a name for someone who takes his friend’s job when she leaves. I would say ‘stalker’ but I wasn’t here.” She smiled and looked at him. He was the same, yet different. She had left without a goodbye, because their wasn’t time, or clearance. It had killed her to be gone all this time without being able to reach out and see how he was. Like all supervisors, he would have her service record. It was the same as when she had left except for a highly redacted few pages at the end that left only the information of the fact she had been off world and working with a military group near the farthest borders of the Alpha Quadrant.

She looked him up and down once more and tried to remember the feel of his hand in her hair. She couldn’t. And she took a deep breath and smiled once more to hide the fact her mind had wandered. For all she knew, he was married, now.
