Newly dressed out in the Security uniform from his fislrst incarnation as a Star Fleet officer, the big Scot made his way to the shuttle bay. As the doors slid open, he walked into the large space and saw the security personnel, those not on duty anyway, milling around and asking questions amongst themselves. “All right. Questions at the end. Fall in, everyone.” the brogue rang out and the assembly feel into ranks in short order.

“Now most if not all of you know as the ship’s Counselor. That was yesterday. This is today. As of now, I am your new Security Chief. And before you ask, yes, I am qualified to hold the job. That’s what I did before I was a Counselor. So… where do we go from here? Let’s start with the basics. I expect each of you to do your job, and do it well. To that end, I want you to take a minute and absorb one very important lesson.” and he paused for a second to make sure they were listening.

“I know a lot of you… hell, probably all of you can fight. But fighting isnt what our priority is. We are keepers of the peace, first and foremost. So before you engage your fists, engage your mouth. And before you engage your mouth, engage your brains. You are no dummies. You wouldnt be here if you were stupid. So… use those brains. Assess, evaluate, plan, react. In that order, every time. Understood?”

Sinclair, CoS

She had finished Medical and figured her DH was the next logical step. Again, having run Security for so long, she hadn’t bothered to look at the information or the schedule, figuring she wouldn’t be on it right now anyway. So it was a complete surprise when she walked into the room, saw the backs of everyone in formation and realized she had walked in on morning briefing or a meeting. The resounding, “Yes, Sir”, was all she heard as she came in.

Sha let the door shut behind her and tilted her neck to see around the heads in front of her to who was at the front of the room. Her half Klingon features suddenly very visible to the person in the front of the room if he was looking. She bit her lip to keep from gasping as she saw Sinclair at the front of the compartment. The shock looking almost comical on the woman’s face.

Sinclair didn’t flinch or pause, but it was obvious he saw the new arrival when he spoke. “And just so we are all clear. Lieutenant Rah-Triton is back with us. Her position in the department is not a demotion. It’s a side effect of some of the demands Star Fleet puts on us from time to time. We go where we are needed. Sometimes when we come back, our former roles aren’t there. So we do what is best for the crew, the ship, and the Federation. If you don’t think that happens… well, remember… I was the ship’s Counselor yesterday.” and he laughed. “Additionally, the Lieutenant will be my Second. Anything coming from her, assume it comes from me. Now, shift assignments. Bravo, Hotel, and Kilo teams. You have enjoyed the luxuries that first shift provides. You all have third watch effective immediately. All of you are dismissed, go get some sleep, okay? Alpha, Charlie, and Echo. You move from second to first. Delta, Fox, and Golf. You get second, moving from third. We will rotate shifts every seven ship days. Amy questions or concerns, find me or the L-T later today and we can discuss. Dismissed.” and his gaze locked onto Sha. “Lieutenant. A word, if you please.” and he moved away from the departing security personnel towards a vacant side of the hanger.

Sha straightened up and let the meeting finish. She was in the back, and grateful for it, because she couldn’t hide her smile as his mention of her return sent a murmur thru the crowd. A couple folks turned around but most held his gaze.

Once dismissed, several flocked around her to hug and welcome her back with hand shakes and back pats. She took a moment to shoo them off with laughter and promises of drinks and stories when time permitted.

Once the room was void of all but the two of them, she leaned back on the wall and crossed her arms. “So… I am sure there is a name for someone who takes his friend’s job when she leaves. I would say ‘stalker’ but I wasn’t here.” She smiled and looked at him. He was the same, yet different. She had left without a goodbye, because their wasn’t time, or clearance. It had killed her to be gone all this time without being able to reach out and see how he was. Like all supervisors, he would have her service record. It was the same as when she had left except for a highly redacted few pages at the end that left only the information of the fact she had been off world and working with a military group near the farthest borders of the Alpha Quadrant.

She looked him up and down once more and tried to remember the feel of his hand in her hair. She couldn’t. And she took a deep breath and smiled once more to hide the fact her mind had wandered. For all she knew, he was married, now.

Royal looked at her at smiled. “Welcome back. I’d ask how your assignment was, but the blank lines in your record and the fact that you are here without any newly visible scars seem to say it went ok.” and he shifted a bit and then turned and grabbed a cargo crate and swung it over and set it down on the deck like it was an empty cardboard box.

“Grab some crate. Let’s talk.” and he took a few steps and repeated the process with another crate. Sitting down, he looked at her. “So…” he began, his brogue as thick as it had been when she left but still clear and friendly, “… how have you been? How you feeling about being back?” he asked, his tone still that of when he had first met her in his office as the Counselor and she had pulled a phaser on him; soft, non-judgmental, but carrying a solidity that came from a level of experience that seemed greater than his age.

Sinclair, CoS

Sha watched him move the boxes and then came over and sat on the offered crate. She didn’t want to ruin his good humor with saying the scars weren’t evident. “I’m alive so I guess it went well. I did what I was supposed to and they let me go. That’s all I can say.” She bristled slightly as she realized his ‘Councelor’ voice was the first she had to deal with.

Figuring it wasn’t going to just shut off, she continued. Her body relaxed a bit, but she was still on edge. They had been heading somewhere intimate when she had left… or she had thought so. Now she wasn’t sure about anything, including her last mission. “All I can say is that not all scars are visible and not all black lines are bad. I can tell you that it was a military mission. That’s why the black lines. Apparently Star Fleet doesn’t want everyone knowing we cross lines sometimes.” She laughed, but between being half Klingon and it being almost forced, it came out closer to a growled rumble.

Quickly changing the subject, she smiled and nodded to the uniform. “Got tired of just talking people down off the edge, you graduated to shooting them down? Seriously, though… congrats on the promotion to Security. You are a great choice for Chief.” Her face, and voice softened slightly. “I mean that, Sinclair. I honestly do.” She was distracted, off balance and unsure and Sinclair would know her well enough to sense it.

“Well, not my first time in the role… as you know.” he said lightly. “And if Star Fleet doesn’t want people knowing they cross lines sometimes, they do a crap job of hiding it.” and he chuckled softly. “Be that as it may, I appreciate the vote of confidence.” and the smile slowly faded a bit. “But enough small talk. So I’m going to ask you two questions, Lieutenant. Three, if you get the first two right. Pay attention. There is no retest on this.” His voice was stern, professional… commanding. It was a tone that made it clear he was not psychoanalyzing her… he was looking for answers.

“One. Can you work in this new role? Going from the Supervisor to the supervised can be hard. Are you going to resent your new position?”

He didn’t register any reaction, didn’t even blink. His blue eyes never left hers and he spoke as soon as she was done answering. “Two. Are you comfortable taking orders from me as the Security Chief of this ship? No second guessing, no going off the reservation. I take input, but this is my section. Not yours, not ours. It has to be that way. You good with that?”

Sinclair, CoS

She was as relaxed as she was going to be, for the moment. Listening to him remind her he had done this before, she remembered reading his jacket and thinking what a good Second he would have made for Security. It made sense, then, that he would take over in her absence. But then again, it was a departure, not an absence. He was the new Security Chief and she was merely a Lieutenant under his command. When he shifted and said he was going to ask her two questions, she let her brows crease more a bit in worry. If he asked her outright about her mission, she would have to deny him. And to that, it would have reprocussions, she was sure. “I’ll do my best,” was all she could say when he asked her.

But when the questions were asked, she went defensive. How dare he ask her! He knew her like few on the ship did. Her fingers tightened on the edge of the crate and she was weak enough for a moment to let a growl audibly slip between grit teeth. She then shuddered and took a deep breath, her eyes closing a moment as she realized, a moment too late, that it was a reasonable request and she had no right to be mad. She was letting this get personal, and it wasn’t.

The whole thing took barely two heartbeats before she looked at him dead in the eyes and answered. “I am back as a Security Lieutenant, nothing more. I’ve never had any problem following orders and never will. I promise you I will never have an issue with your orders as long as this crew isn’t placed in jepeordy from them. In which case I will pull you aside personally, if possible and ask your reasoning and explain mine. I will not lie and say I will follow blindly and without question because I wouldn’t expect that from anyone. And I won’t even give that answer to the Commander. If that’s satisfactory for you, I give you my word I will honor the positions we are both in and won’t cross the line.” She waited for his reaction. She wouldn’t give a blind ‘yes’ answer to even a Captain or Commander or Fleet. She was not an unthinking creature and was not a blind follower. But she would not disgrace herself, the uniform, or the position.

She flexed her fingers slightly to unleash the cramps from her hasty reaction.

Sinclair looked at her intently for a long moment and then leaned forward and looked her dead in the eye, his expression unreadable. He was silent, looking at her, and then finally said “Good. Question three… you want to have dinner with me tonight? As I recall, we were in the middle of something, and I think we should… discuss it… somewhere more private than the Shuttle Bay.” and a small smile played across his lips.

Sinclair, CoS

She didn’t flinch. He was testing her, and she recognized that now. The only reaction was a tightening of her jaw as she fought to keep her body still. He knew her background… her tendencies… and her temper. And yet he baited her. She wasn’t going to give him reason to send her from the ship.

As the question came, Sha’s reaction was immediate, untamed and instant. Her brows rose and she opened her jaw to answer but nothing came out. Closing her mouth she tilted her head slightly and confusion was evident on her face. “You want to have dinner… tonight? I thought…” She swallowed and relaxed a bit. The true, calmer, Sha came out as she looked at him. “I thought you being my supervisor would end that. I didn’t want to ho… to think it was going to continue.” It only took her a moment to smile and nod. “I’d love to have dinner with you. And you are right… not in the cargo bay.” The Lieutenant relaxed for the first time as she realized she was truly home again.
