Cases weren’t extreme at times like this. Pareses squares, careless engineers, no great challenges. When the head of every biobed failed, and the ship went to emergency lights, the paradigm changed.

Natasha clicked on the small penlight again taking a second look at Ensign Bender’s tongue. To her knowledge, there was only one condition that caused this. “Okay so you have Lingua villosa nigra or Melanoglossia,” she announced taking a step back from the young man sitting on her biobed. Her face held a perplexed expression as if she was confused about what was happening.

“Is that bad doc,” Ensign Bender’s tone trembled slightly as his eyes held a wild look of worry.

“No it’s just commonly called Black Hairy tongue,” she gave him the common medical term as she pulled a PaDD from her coat pocket. Tapping a few buttons on her screen she researched a hunch.

“Can I spread it by kissing,” he reached over grabbing Nat’s arm in a panic, “and would if anyone comes in you can’t reveal I have it right?” The anxiety in the young Ensign’s voice concerned Nat making her raise an eyebrow and smirk.

“No, and I can fix it before you leave. Black Hairy Tongue is a condition with we see from several different etiologies. Yours is from a reaction to the antibiotic I gave you a few days ago. ” Pulling a hypo from a drawer she injected the man in the neck filling the room with a soft pneumatic pssssstttt. “Now just don’t go kissing anyone for the next few days and you should be fine,” she smiled at the young man who looking immensely relieved. It was then she noticed the lights flicker and then switch to emergency mode after a long pause. “You are fine to go,” she dismissed the young man and tapped her comm badge. =/\=Engineering we are…engineering....=/\= she repeated noting that the communications systems seemed to be down.

“Kavonne, keep an eye on things here. Comm systems are down and I am going to head to engineering to see if they can get someone up here,” Natasha told the duty nurse as she walked towards the door of sickbay.

Sha was on the other side of the door as the Doc headed out. She jumped slightly at the surprise of another person so close to the door. “Oh, sorry, Doc,” the half Klingon apologized as she stepped aside. “Was just coming to see you for my check in. Should I come back later?”

While she was in the security uniform and rank pips, if Knight was aware of her return, she’d know of the demotion in station from Security Chief to Security Officer that the woman had acquired on her return from whatever mission she had been on.

“Yeah we are,” Nat said looking up from her PaDD as the woman addressed her., “oh my god when did you get back?” Instead of remembering anything about Klingon customs, Natasha immediately hugged the woman trying to enter Sickbay. Rah-Triton had been gone a while but not long enough to ever be forgotten.

“Barlow,” Natasha yelled out to the ensign filling the supply station. “Do me a favor and go let engineering know we are having technical issues,” she ordered. The Starfleet Corman immediately left to follow Natasha’s orders as Nat led the ex security chief to a bed.

“Seeing you is a huge relief in more ways than one,” she confessed to the woman. “We were fine a few minutes ago before we started having power and comm trouble. If you are here checking in though that means it can’t be anything serious,” Knight pulled out her tricorder and began to scan her. While she would have to wait to upload the information from the PaDD to the computer Natasha could at least do this end of the paperwork

The hug startled the half Klingon, but she was used to it. After her initial shock, she managed a half hearted hug back. “It’s good to be missed,” she smiled and nodded. As Knight led her back into medical, she raised her eyebrow and thumbed over her shoulder. “You know, if that was important, I could come back later. It wasn’t worth skipping wherever you were going.”

“Yes and no,” Natasha said. “We are just having power issues but you know engineers,” she rolled her eyes. “Two guesses says Jarred has run some variance scan to squeak out a few extra whatever squeaks out of a warp corp so that when we are in a pickle he can say he doesn’t think it will work but it will. He probably blew some fuse. Anyway, power will come back eventually. I would rather spend my time catching up with you than dealing with the engineers.” Pulling out her tricorder, Natasha began to scan her friend.

Obediently, Sha hopped up on the medical bed. The scan would show sever things, none of them good, had happened to the Lieutenant. There were two long lines down her back like a two clawed animal had caught her from just near her right shoulder and sliced down towards her left hip. They were helped along with healing, but her Klingon stubborness had meant she hadn’t let the surgeon dermo the skin back to its normal smoothness. So the scars remained. There was also evidence of a busted hand, cracked rib and hairline fracture in her jaw. Except for the scars on her back, the others had been healed and were doing fine.

Natasha tried not to show concern as she began to scan Sha. She expected lumps and bumps from security officers and burns and lacerations from engineering but Sha seemed to have injuries that were not run of the mill for her chosen career. Starting with the most recent injury, Natasha ran it over the long lacerations still healing. “So I had a baby when you were gone and you decided to go several rounds with a batlif blindfolded,” she left the sentence open-ended. If they hadn’t jun down the entire length of her back from scapula to the pelvis, Natasha might have let it go but whatever happened worried her. Sha was extremely good at her job and for her to take a injury like this, the situation had to have been extreme.

Sha took a deep breath and looked to be sure they weren’t being listened to. “You have a right to know. I was gone because I was sent on a Mission for the Fleet. I can’t go into details till I know how much they gave you access to. Suffice it to say, things went.... ‘sideways’?” She queried the word with the Doc as if making sure she was using it properly.

She smiled at the woman and smiled with a tenderness that made her look more like she was scowling because of her ridges. “I promise to take it easy till the scars healed, but I admit the tauntness of the skin means I need to work out more to keep it from hindering me in the future. So do not be surprised if I come to you to occasionally with a couple spots bleeding cause I stretched too far. I am sure you are already aware of my pension for pushing the limits.” She laughed then cause more than once she had come to medical for a quick fix because she hadn’t known when to stop.

“I am well aware of your pushing the limits,” Daye let out a deep sigh and half frown. “My routine used to always be to get coffee, pull up the reports, and find out when your appointment was.” The tone was slightly joking and partly serious. Sha was in a lot but she was also the toughest person Natasha knew. The designation did not come from sitting in the security office eating a donut.

Then her face went still. “I do have one request, however.”

Natasha stopped all her playful banter noticing how Sha seemed to be needing something. The woman’s personality was not the type to be shy or pensive. She was al Klingon from the standpoint, Sha most often was direct and to the point. “Name it.”

“Something to help me sleep.” She didn’t say anything further, but the look in her eyes, though she wasn’t aware of it, had gone haunting. As if she was remembering something at that very moment that she wished she could forget forever. Whatever had happened in the three months she had been gone, hadn’t been a good thing.

Natasha didn’t say a word but headed to her pharmaceutical area. Flipping past a few bottles she retrieved on and walked back to Sha. “You can take on a night but do not go past three or you will be sleeping for days,” she instructed her. Holding it out she waited for the woman to take it.

“I have no problem giving you this but you know a good bender with a few close friends can work miracles. I am not a counselor but I do know the therapeutic effects of vodka.”
