Royal didn’t stop to drop off his bags, he went directly to the bridge. Stepping off the turbolift, he looked over the bridge and smiled at the few faces he saw there. The Ensign at the Security station immediately stepped in front of him and said “Sir. Can I help you?” in a tone that conveyed his concern that an unknown individual just walked onto the bridge. Sinclair smiled inwardly, the action and tone making him remember that he was no longer a Security officer himself. He looked at the Ensign and said “I am Lieutenant Commander Sinclair. New ship’s Counselor. I was told to report to the Captain.” He made no move to bypass the Security Ensign who, after verifying Sinclair;s identity, said “Welcome aboard, Sir. Captain is in the Ready Room.” and indicated the door. Sinclair smiled and said “Thank you very much.” and walked over to the door and pressed the chime.

Lt. Cmdr. Royal Sinclair, CNS

At his desk, Dante had a selection of PaDD’s spread around the surface, and his console split into multiple screens, some with reports of repair estimates after the last mission, some with crew rotation orders, others with department head performance reviews that his hard worked Officers had submitted. As the chime rang, he didn’t look up, just said the time honored “Enter” and allowed the doors to slide apart to admit the next person with a request or report to offer.

Most things here were being done at an advanced pace, the odd situation they had found themselves in meant that the ship was going to be docked at Starbase for a time to undergo repairs, refreshment and allow Temporal Investigations to do their thing, along with set Dante and his Executive Officer as the formal Command team of the Star Ship after both of them arrived in less than ideal circumstances during the mission, his Orion XO in particular.

Once he sensed movement coming through the door, the Captain looked up from his work and saw their new Counselor, one Lt Cmdr Sinclair who had been assigned to them out of the Academy training ship, on short notice as well. He stood and nodded, and held out his hand in a friendly if slightly less than formal greeting. “Welcome to the Saracen Commander Sinclair” he said, “I trust your trip out here wasn’t too rushed?”

Sinclair took the Captain’s hand in a firm grip and said “A bit unexpected, Captain, but I’ve had a couple’ days to adjust.” the big man said with a broad and friendly smile. “And from what I’ve garnered from the few reports I could get my eyes on, ‘rushed’ seems to be the modus operandi for the ship over the past few months.” and he released the handshake. “Mind if I sit, Sir?”

Sinclair, CNS

“Not at all, go ahead” Dante said, and returned to his own seat. “So, Counselor. Academy service, prior you were in Security I see. That is an odd career switch from Security to Counselor don’t you think? What made you take that step?” Dante had read the mans file, it was extensive and his performance at the Academy was noted. All in all, Dante felt that his background in security was going to give Sinclair an advantage considering the mission brief that he had received from Command about his vessels assignments.

Sinclair laughed a bit and said in his thick Scottish brogue “Wasn’t actually a choice, Captain. I was training in psychology and sociology; specifically with mediation, negotiation, and dealing with the mentally ill in order to make myself more effective as a Security officer. Well, I guess it turns out I had a knack for it, and before I really knew what was happening I was enrolled in Counselor training. On the surface, the two don’t seem at all related. But the more I learned, the more I saw the two compliment each other quite well. Counselors have a unique role in dealing with the crew . That let’s them identify potential issues before they happen and treat the problem before it becomes unmanageable. That helps take some of the burden off the Security staff. And being able to take part in discussions with outside agencies that have business with the ship, and knowing how to assess a Security threat, makes the Counselor more effective at giving advice on interactions. I wrote my thesis on this very subject, and..” here Sinclair chuckled a bit and scratched the back of his head a bit, “… and it was like no one had thought of it before. So after I graduated, it was suggested I fill the void on Challenger as we hadn’t had a Counselor on board in months. The Skipper though it was a good idea, and the next thing I knew I had more pips on my collar, a closet full of blue uniforms instead of red, and a much cushier office that got a lot more visitors. Got Challenger up to speed on their overdue psyche exams, and then got a call from Command saying ‘Haul your hind end to rendezvous with the Saracen. You’ve been transferred.” and he smiled and looked at the Captain squarely and said “So here my hind-end is, reporting to you, Sir.”

Sinclair, CNS

“Unfortunately Counselor, your hind-end isn’t going to get much rest. We’ve been without a counselor ourselves for some time and the crew may be in need of your guidance after our last mission. Our Executive Officer was previously Starfleets representative on OEDV, but went missing. We discovered her trapped in the year 2025. I’d like you to pay attention to her Commander, she is a capable Officer but something like that is bound to leave a mark, and she seems to chafe a bit at her enforced absence. I don’t want her trying to prove herself to everyone when she doesn’t have to.”

Captain Knight, CO

Sinclair nodded and said “Understood, Captain. I know you have been sans Counselor for more than bit, so my first priority will be assessments of all the crew. Once I get that done and we can say we are current on our fitness reports, I’ll see if the XO is open to a little extra discussion. And I will make sure I keep you appraised if I notice anything. Do you have any other concerns or areas you want me to pay attention to specifically?”

Sinclair, CNS

“The only other concern I have now” he told the man, “although slight, is our new Chief of Security. She’s been placed in this position rather quickly, although I trust her completely and she is more than capable. Still, it is a new experience she didn’t arrive here prepared for and she may have doubts. If so, work with her. Other than that Commander Sinclair, I welcome you to the Saracen and look forward to having you as part of my crew.”
