“Is there anyway to check to see if we got caught in the transfer between universes?” Threwn asked, “Outside of firing our phasers.”

-XO

Sha frowned and tilted her head. “Maybe two probes, one fore, one aft. See which one hits .... something… first?” It wasn’t the greatest idea, “It is the safest way I can think. If we are in space type area, it will read the changes on the fringe. But if,” her mind shuddered at the thought, “we are ‘in’ something, if will hopefully agitate it less than firing weapons.” After speaking out of turn, she glanced up at Sinclair. Learning to step back was a bit harder than she anticipated.

She quickly turned back to her console with a self chiding mantra echoing in her head.

Colter began going though Intel files to see if there was anything new regarding the Mirror Universe. A recent article caught his eye.

“Captain, Intel reports from the USS Olympic state they recently had a run-in with the mirror ‘verse. Command staff was slowly being replaced with their Mirror’verse counterparts. They weren’t switching places. The real crew was being . . . killed by their replacements. There was some kind of device hidden in the bowels of the ship allowing the mirror people to come through. They were planning an invasion with the Olympic as their flagship and base of ops.”

OOC: This prolly has nothing to do with this sim, but I play on the Olympic as well, and that did recently happen. Just thought I would add some recent Intel info.

OOC: Nicely done, I love the flavour

Colter (CIO)

Sha frowned. “The Mirror Verse, I thought it was actual space, but… different. Do we think that’s where we are? Some alternative version of a universe?” The idea didn’t track but then, neither did an entire space ship being in a bubble of ‘nothing’. So while it made no sense, she couldn’t exactly discount it either. At least, not right away. She merely added it to the list of ‘strange things’ happening on her first day back.

Though she ‘was’ happy she had been aboard when it happened. She couldn’t imagine having come this far in a shuttle only to either see them disappear, or have them not here at all.

“Launch the probes, we will see if anything happens although I have a feeling we’re not stuck in anything with such defined boundaries.” Dante rubbed his jaw for a moment in thought. “The structural damage could have been from a localized moment of stress when we phased out of our universe, we may not be able to explain it but if it’s not critical, we can come back to that. What we need is to find our way out of here, and back to there, without going further where we don’t want to go. So how do we do that? We need a starting point, something to give us something to work with here. Any ideas? Can we look closer at that damage and find out how it happened? Maybe it left some kind of residue behind that will help.”

Captain Knight, CO

“With the lack of… well… anything… around us, could it be plausible that we have kind of fallen between the two universes for some reason? Like we were about to cross into the Mirror Universe… but somehow failed to do so?” Sinclair asked. Physics was never his strong point, but he had done decent in his classes on the subject.

Sinclair, CoS

“That’s the direction I was going, Sinclair,” Colter added. Perhaps if we reverse course and follow the path we came in on. . . if there was a window or opening that brought here, maybe it’s in the same place and will let us out?”

Colter (CIO)

Probes would locate again no phenomena, but an exterior scan of the Saracen showed residual effects of breaching through a dimensional barrier.

-GM Fate

“Well, gentlemen, there you have it. No beginning, no end, and no idea.” She shook her head and glanced up in concern at Royal. “I don’t like this at all,” she murmured to him.

“Right, so if we have fallen into an empty dimension between ours and the mirror universe,” Dante verbalized his thoughts as he eyed the Terran symbol flashing on the screen intermittently, “we must have entered through an Interphasic Rift.” He looked up and eyed Colter and Sinclair, “Lets try your idea of heading back the way we came, Helm, reverse course, half impulse.”

Captain Knight, CO

“I could send one probe ‘forward’ and one back, whence we came.” It would be safer to have a probe hit whatever was out there first.

An idea came to Adam. “Where are these symbols coming from?” He asked curiously. “Is it a signal from someplace, or do we have a potential intruder onboard?” he asked to everyone, looking at the captain as they prepared to reverse course.

-XO

Sha worked on moving thru the systems to see if there was a way to trace the location of the symbols. Or perhaps she could find a system they ‘weren’t’ in.

On her other screen, she was monitoring the return trajectory and the hull cameras as they moved, hoping to catch the event horizon as they moved back into normal space.

Sinclair began cross referencing bio signatures with comm signals, lookingbfor any odd gap or overlap.

Sinclair, CoS

OOC : Fixing typo.

DaVinci replied to the XO. “It’s possible that some personnel from the Mirror ‘verse, may be on our Saracen.” He gazed at the crew on the bridge, taking in the behaviors of each person and what he knew of them. “I don’t believe any one here on the bridge has been replaced, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened elsewhere on the ship.”

He continued making sure everyone on the bridge could hear him. Remember, this other universe is brutal, aggressive, their social norms and actions tend to resort to violence. It is easier for a civilized person to act barbaric, than for a barbaric person to act civilized.”

“Skipper, I suggest if any of us leave the bridge, we do so in groups of two or three, and be wary of anyone that appears to be acting. . .different. Right now, until we can figure out a sure-fire way to tell the difference, WE. . .are possibly the only ones we can trust.”

Colter (CIO)

“Universes have slightly different constants. Each mirror individual should vibrate at a different frequency than the individual in this universe. We could create a detector system. It might take a bit of doing.”

Graham CSO

Sha turned around. “How about something in our Comm badges, or even a marker under our skin? At least for command crew with vital system access?” She wasn’t sure if it was too extreme on short notice, but never hurts to ask.

Sha

“Would something like that be feasible?” Dante asked, his mind going to his wife and child, the sudden worry at the problems suggested bringing in a measure of doubt. “Of course, currently we are only getting a sporadic signal from the mirror universe from what we can tell, so we should be able to get a signal from ours as well, or get a signal out although that might be detected on the other side as well.”

Dante thought for a moment and then turned back to Graham. “Hang on, is that terran signal something we are getting as a transmission, or is it coming from our computer directly?”

Captain Knight, CO

The Terran signal in the LCARS display appeared to be mixed with their own systems, there was no sign of an incoming transmission or signal that would explain it.

“Subcutaneous transponders are fairly common and can be made only to activate under a specific scan… so as not to alert others. The other detector is an innovation. I would have to design and create it from scratch.” Graham stalled until the GM could tell him how long that would take.

It would take a few hours for a Scientist of Grahams ability to create a device from scratch, and there would be no guarantee it would be any better than existing tech that was tried and true.

Adam looked back at his display as he waited patiently for the results. He tried to remember what he could of the mirror universe.

“Wouldnt do us much good if some had already swapped places. We need to know if that’s happened. Maybe compare radiation signatures to last physical. Background radiation is unique to all dimensions.”

Sinclair, CoS (also a PhD)

Sha had an idea, “The transporter buffers. They should have the actual crew patterns and we can find a way to use ‘that’ information to look for ‘that’ particular signature on the ship. The duplicates would be slightly off so we could ask for close comparisons as well. Would that work?”

Sha
Security

“Buffers only carry the information of the last transport and then only as long as they are on. Its a huge amount of data.” Teller remembered the two Enterprise D missions that covered that topic and the one incident on Deep Space Nine.

At his console, DaVinci listened to the conversation as he watched the ship retrace her steps on his monitor. He called out distances as they got closer to the point they first felt the effects. “5000 kilometers (for lack of a more accurate number) and closing. . . .”

Colter (CIO)

Sha felt sheepish for not remembering that. Her mind was so jumbled with trying to help she wasn’t thinking straight. She took a deep breath and went back to her console, her monitor showing the ship in relationship to what they hoped would be the horizon to getting them out.

Sha

“Let’s assume for the moment that the computer is all that is affected,” Dante stated as he began to pace back and forth. “If any crew have switched places, others should notice the change in behaviour but, so far we only have evidence of the computer. Lets trust our crew to be who they are until proven otherwise and solve the problem in front of us.”

Sha nodded. As she relaxed, just marginally, she reminded herself that as long as nothing went awry, they were fine.

The ship approached the mark the computer had set as their entry point, although in the ‘nothing’ around them that was maybe a best guess at most. There was simply no outside marker to measure distance, speed or anything else for that matter.

The Saracen passed the mark, and nothing happened. Dante sighed and turned to Colter, but as he was about to speak, all the consoles on the Bridge started flashing. The Terran symbol alternated with that of the Federation on every screen, rapidly changing back and forth and the lights on the Bridge dropped once again to emergency levels.

“Helm has locked out, we have no control of the ship!” The NE at the Helm station reported, his hands frantically moving over the surface and finding no response. All of the other stations would find that they were locked out of the computer one moment, had access the next and then lost access once again. The computer was struggling to respond to any input.

At the Tactical station, the Saracen suddenly began searching for targets for it’s weapons systems. The probes they had launched earlier appeared in the targeting systems.

A shower of sparks from the Engineering console alerted them to a sudden surge in power, as the ships computer switched rapidly between conflicting power overlays, some of which were never in the Saracen’s power scheme and seemed to come from, somewhere else.

Captain Knight, CO

As if in cue to her thoughts, the consoles went haywire. Her own gasp, followed by a growl made her head shake. “Nothing at Security, either, Captain. I can’t seem to keep it focused.” She was running her hands over her console and the one beside her to see if she could isolate the security system during the brief seconds she actually could see it. “AHhhhhhrrrr....” her deep rumbling growl a clear indicator to anyone who knew her that whoever did this was gonna pay dearly in the end.

“I’ve have zero matter readings, zero power readings.” which was close to impossible.
