Mark hunched over in the chair, resting his elbows on his knees as he read the results of a newly posted study about the use of dermal regeneration technology up to 72 hours after initial injury. Mark sighed and set down his PADD as he gazed out the window of Starbase 257. It seemed like yesterday that Mark was still completing his residency and wondering if he’d ever obtain his commission. As soon as he was a fully fledged doctor, the universe became a blur. With orders to the USS Saracen, followed by numerous shuttles and transports just to get him in a position to rendezvous with the ship, Mark “Flip” Atlas felt like everything he had ever known had been tossed up in the air.

Still staring out the window, Mark finally saw the grey hull of a Pendragon Class Battlecruiser warp into within a few kilometers from the station. This is it. He thought to himself. Finally, I can treat some real emergencies. The young doctor picked up the small bag that contained his entire life. His uniforms, a few sets of civilian clothing, a few family photos, his PADD, and a few basic toiletries. He slung the bag over his shoulder and made his way towards the dock where he would board the ship.

After several minutes, the USS Saracen was docked with Starbase 257. Immediately, the dock was abuzz with activity. Workers moving crates of supplies on and off the ship, crew members departing for liberty, and even dock workers outside the ship beginning repairs on the hull. She hadn’t even been docked for 10 minutes and already the Saracen was getting right down to business.

Mark reported on the quarterdeck and was given directions to his cabin. His very first cabin, on his very first ship, at his very first Starfleet command as an officer. Mark made sure to also ask for directions to Sickbay from his cabin, as that would likely be his first stop. The ship was far more confusing and massive than it looks from the outside. Upon reaching a turbolift, Mark stepped inside. “Deck 5.” He spoke, as the turbolift shot upwards.

After 15 minutes of searching, Flip finally made it to his new quarter. He stepped inside when the doors opened for him. Looking around, the room looked fairly standard. The room was bare, without a hint of color in the room. Mark didn’t mind. He wasn’t the kind of person who put too much thought into interior decoration. He smiled and set his bag on the bed in front of him. He was home.

Which was about when the lights in the room went out, suddenly and with an obvious fizzing sound and glow from behind one of the ceiling panels indicating some sort of malfunction. Not only had the lights gone down, but it was apparent that the replicator, desk console and door had also lost power, the only light coming from the window to his quarters that faced the station the Saracen was docked at.
