She had seen Hannah book the holodeck for personal time and made what she hoped was a correct assumption about the intention. Otherwise, this would be rather embarrassing. And while Cori couldn’t really say for sure if she was looking forward to this, she was curious to get to know this other woman better.

Hannah had booked the holodeck and sent the reservation to Cori, or at least she thought she had. She wasn’t sure how that worked for Cori, if it went into the computer or showed up on the screen in her quarters, but she hoped that she sent it correctly.

Appearing in the blank holodeck, the grid was oddly soothing. It spoke of possibilities, of whatever you imagine being at the tip of one’s fingertips. As much as this space was also confining to her in a way, it still held sway over her memories and idea of what could be.

Black legging and a teal long sleeved tunic, cut asymmetrically over her hips, Cori awaited Asimina’s arrival.

Hannah arrived wearing leggings, but more heavy duty than dancer’s leggings. She’d researched practice clothes for dancing and she’d put on the closest thing she had. These were more heavy duty for climbing than soft for dancing, but she hoped they worked, and then a fitted long t-shirt. Which was too long for climbing but she thought it might be appropriate for what Cori would need her to wear for dancing. Hannah was excited. It had been awhile since she’d met anyone who actually wanted to talk to her like a normal person and even share interests. Hannah had had friends on the Fearless, but it had taken a long time to get to that point. She was hopeful of making friends here on the Saracen. “Hi Cori! How are you today?” Hannah walked over and looked around, she hadn’t set a program because she didn’t know what Cori would want to do. “It looks so plain like this, but it’s kind of like a cliff you’ve never climbed. It can be anything, easy or terrifying. It’s awesome!”

Ohh boy! Cori had never been the energetically enthusiastic type and rarely gravitated towards that kind of person, but here she was and she knew she would have to give Hannah a chance. Casting her gaze around she nodded. It gets more interesting when you’re not limited by actual programs too. Like, because I can generate anything, I just have to think about what I want, and it appears. Better than any programmer”-she leaned in conspiratorially, placing her hand upright to touch the side of her mouth as if she were pretending to tell her a secret-“but shhh! don’t tell the engineers that. They get prickly when they think someone else can do their job for them,” she said with a wink.

Hannah laughed, “I won’t tell. Promise. Engineers don’t like me. They like to create all the prosthetics I work with but I can do it better. I made the mistake of telling an engineer that once. Won’t do that again.”

“And I am… here. Another day. Though I suspect it’s going to feel very different later,” she said with a slight shrug. “But before we get started, let me ask you this: when you climb, what do you get out of it?” Cori asked curiously.

~Corinne Dalton

That caught Hannah’s attention, “Different? Is everything okay?” Her concern was genuine. What could make Cori’s day feel different?

Corinne shrugged. “As much as it can be,” she said, knowing it was cryptic but not interested in getting into the nitty gritty of it all.

“It’s hard to explain. When I was younger being outside was always…more real to me I guess. I was born deaf and our colony was in a floating city above the actual planet. But we had natural preserves where we were allowed to go. The air, the light, the ground, everything felt different and distinct. Unlike inside where it was all the same. When I climb I can feel the vibrations in the rock. I can feel when the spike goes in by the vibration if it will hold or if the rock face will crack.” Hannah shrugs, “It fells real.”

She nodded slowly. It made sense. And the holodeck could simulate that well enough- that was the beauty of the holodeck. “Let me guess, you’re totally an adrenaline junkie,” she teased with a grin. By her nature and upbringing Cori was an adventurous person with little fears, at least not when it came to physical limitations. But those limitations were an entirely different thing for her now.

~Corinne Dalton

Hannah shook her head with a grin. “Not really. Though I do enjoy a good challenge. My mother said I was a ‘tree hugging dirt worshiper.’ As long as I’m outside I’m happy. Doesn’t matter if I’m climbing or sitting. It’s just more real to me than anything else.”
Lt jg Asimina, Doctor

“I grew up on a farm and spent a lot of time outside,” Cori said softly. “I get it.” Her chest expanded with a simulated breath. “I’m happy to do this, but just remember that for me now it’s different. Reality is entirely subjective,” she said with a shrug. “I’m not going to experience exertion, or that sense of pushing yourself. Sure, I can experience the simulated effect, but it’s not quite the same. There’s no risk.”

~Corinne Dalton

Hannah smiled, “Cori you don’t have to enjoy it for the same reasons I do. You don’t even have to enjoy it. If you don’t, we can find something else. If there is no physical challenge for you, think of it as a puzzle. You have to find the right combination of hand and foot holds to get to the top. Now what about this dancing thing, I have no experience with it at all.”
Lt jg Asimina, Doctor

“Well… I haven’t taken lessons since I was a teenager, and I’ve never taught anyone. And while some people have a natural rhythm, you can learn to find the beat. Once you have the beat, you can figure out how to move yourself from one beat to the other.” Cori realized that might not sound very convincing and shrugged. “We’ll wing it,” she said with a chuckle.

~Corinne Dalton

“I love music with a deep bass. Even before I got my implants I could feel it. But I don’t know if you can really dance to that.” Hannah put her bag and water down and walked over. “So where do we start?”
Lt jg Asimina, Doctor

“You can dance to anything,” Cori said with a grin. “It just changes how you dance. But a deep bass beat makes sense. We can work with that. Why don’t you pick the music and I can teach you how to find the undercurrent that you can move your body to?”

~Corinne Dalton

Hannah looked a little unsure. She reached up taking off her implants. For her with the on the bass could get lost in the other sounds. “Computer, play Sad But True cover by The Hu” (ooc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpxA_ZxGX_M). She ordered the computer to adjust the music imput to increase the bass output of the music. The music started and it took a few measures before the bass kicked in, but when it did, Hannah couldn’t help but smile, feeling the rythm pulse around her as a feeling rather than a series of melodies and notes.
Lt jg Asimina, Doctor

It wasn’t exactly typical ‘dance music’ but all music could be danced to. Watching Hannaha nd standing in front of her, Cori made sure the doctor could see her directly. She signed, Do you feel the rhythm in the bass beat? That’s the thing you can match your movement to. Watch me for a moment.

Stepping back, Cori simply rocked side-to-side on her feet but used her hips to push the motion in each direction. After a few beats of this she then began to lift and set down each foot in time with the bass beat. After a moment of that she began to sway her body in the direction she was stepping so she was stepping back and forth in a fluid almost undulating motion.

~Corinne Dalton

Hannah nodded and watched, her head already bobbing to the bass beat moving through her. She freely admitted that she was totally impressed by Cori as she created, from scratch, the graceful movements of a dance. Hannah was athletic, but she never thought of herself as graceful. Of course, she’d never tried to do anything graceful, like dance, either. She watched Cori for a few more beats and then began to copy her, starting with swaying and then stepping, almost like a round, where she was one complexity behind Cori. She was able to follow the beat and steps easily though her movements had none of the fluidity of Cori’s movements, but looked rather like she was trying to repeat the choreography in her head than simply dance, which she was.
Lt jg Asimina, Doctor

Nodding in approval, Dalton smiled. Good, she signed. But don’t lose the feeling. Maybe it can be helpful, since you can’t hear the lyrics, to imagine your own story this song is telling. That will tell you the kind of feelings it might bring up. From there you can match your movements to the feeling. Try to keep it lose, but don’t overthink it. She hoped that didn’t seem contradictory, as it could be a lot to do at once, but in her experience, with some practice, one could find their own way to express themselves through movement. After all, there was no right or wrong way to dance (though some might disagree).
