Royal shrugged and said “Are you sure someone did that? It’s not something that was yours and mis-tagged, like the ballet slippers?” Royal knew the answer; he was, after all, for all intents and purposes speaking to the ship’s computer. But the question had to be asked.

She gave him a withering look. “Really?” Cori chuckled. “No, this isn’t mine and isn’t a part of anything logged that I can tell. If someone replicated the case, then I might be able to find out who, but I’d gave to go in the computer to do that.” Despite the oddity, and perhaps even the possible danger this riddle containing case posed, the scientist that she was was also very intrigued. She did like a good mystery, after all.

Royal tapped his comm badge. =/\= Sinclair to Security. Send me a list of every person to access these quarters since the transport of personal effects. And send me two scene technicians immediately. =/\= He looked at Cori and said “If there is someone who can sneak a crate past you, then we have a potential security issue. I’m gonna have the techs o over the case and the note and see if we can pick up any indication of who your riddle-leaving friend may be. Off the record, of course.” he added with a grin. He, too, liked a good mystery.

If the piece of paper had contained a warning or threat, she’d have been worried, and yet this riddle seemed innocuous. Echo. And echo of what? “After we’re done with the paper as evidence, I want it back,” she said, her already bright eyes gleaming. “Another personal effect to add to my living space,” she joked.

Looking around, they had made good progress on the unpacking. She wasn’t sure if they should continue now that they were distracted with their mystery, but Cori was still glad for the company.

Royal looked at her and asked “Is the note all thats in there?”

Sinclair, COS

The crate was pretty basic, and it hadn’t appeared that way, but Cori looked again. “Huh,” she murmured as she brought the crate closer and peered along the inside. “I think there’s a compartment or something. A space anyway. Gently she pushed the pad of her finger around the area she could see, her ‘senses’ detecting… plastic and… silica?

A moment later there was a small pop and the compartment flipped open. Cori pulled out a tiny sealed plastic bag measuring 5 cms by 3 cms containing fine pale grey sand. She held it up for Royal to see. “Beach day?”

A chime from the door indicated the team had arrived and Royal said “Hold that thought.” and stepped to the door. “Good timing. We have a crate, note, and a bag of something I want you all to scan. Full work up, trace tracking, DNA… the works. Got it?” The Lieutenant in charge of the team said “Got it, Chief. And here is the list you wanted.” and he handed the Scotsman a PaDD. Royal looked at it as he walked over to Cori and said “No unusual access, so that’s out. But what if…” and he looked at the crate ID tag and tapped a few commands into the PaDD. “Well well well… look at this.” and he showed the PaDD to Corinne. “Seems your crate here is a bit of a runabout. Looks like it was only recently sent here. From all the garbage attached to it, I’d say it got lost in transit at some point… and stayed lost for a more than a minute, thats for sure.”

Royal

After looking over the PaDD, Cori moved back to the sofa and sat with a puzzled expression on her face. “Well… I did die once and then I was declared MIA for three years, so… maybe not so unexpected.” She leaned forward and braced her arms on her thighs, looking at Royal. “So… someone sent it to me? Who though? Why? A riddle? she said with a confused laugh. “Sand?” She laughed more. The whole thing was rather hilarious to a degree. At least it didn’t feel suspicious anymore, or that someone had snuck into her quarters.

Her eyes went wide. “Wait, I have quarters now and if this arrived sometime, someone did bring it in her, didn’t they? It was’t in my stored belongings.”
