Royal nodded and said “Aye.” He then grinned and walked over to her replicator and ordered bangers and mash and mushy peas. As the computer processed the order he looked at her and said “Excellent place for a picnic. Now sit.” and he picked up the plate and got a glass of lemonade and went back to the couch.

“See? this is what I’m talking about. Textiles. I’m thinking a nice textured colourful area rug and then you could just picnic properly on the floor,” she said with a grin as she sat down next to him and lounged backwards into.

Pulling over a crate for a table, he grinned at her and said “I’d ask if you wanted something just to be polite, but I’m not wasting any time.” and he took a big bite of banger. “So…” he asked as he chewed, “… ask me something. Anything you wanted to know about me. No limits… shoot.” As informal as he was being, there was a purpose behind his direction… a purpose solely for her benefit.

Royal

“Anything. I mean, that does open up a whole slew of things…” she said, her electric gaze tilted upwards towards her ceiling for a moment.

Shifting to sit more forward and gaze at Royal directly, Cori smiled. “Okay, if you could anywhere right now. Just drop everything and go one place in the galaxy, where would you go and why?”

Royal smiled and looked at the chronometer on his wrist and grinned. “Edinburgh. National Rubgy pitch. Match between Scotland and Brazil in two hours Earth time.” and he looked at her and said “Smacked that one outta tha park, eh?” and he chuckled and took another bite.

Royal

“Ahhhh!” Cori said waving a finger at him. “But I asked you why. Why that out of allll the things in this universe you could do is that the one thing you’d want to do if you had no limits?”

He chewed for a moment and looked at her, the smile never leaving his face. Slowly swallowing and taking a long, drawn out sip of his drink; he set the glass down and said flatly “Because that is, and always will be, where I find true happiness. I have found joy and happiness in most places… but nothing like there. That’s why.” and he shrugged and took another bite.

Royal

Tilting her head, she was suddenly rather curious. “I know that feeling,” she said softly. “What is it about the activity? Is it just the camaraderie?” She understood well enough the communal aspect of sports. Ballet had been the same way often, but she couldn’t help but feel there was more to it than that.

Royal shook his head and shrugged. Wiping his mouth, he said “No… well… not just that. Rugby to me has always been something more than just a game. When I played, it was like I was supposed to be there. I loved everything about it. The smell of the leather the balls are made of still to this day. The tightness of my boots when I laced them up. The impact of hitting a back just right and popping that ball lose. The elation of tri. The bitterness of close loss… all of that was just… I dunnae… magical… every time.” and he picked up his glass and took a drink. Smiling with pride he said “You know… I was selected for the Scottish National Team at eighteen. Second proudest day of my life…”

Royal

It was lovely to see him so lit up about something he was passionate about. Not that Royal wasn’t often expressive, but she wasn’t sure she had seen him really like this before. “That’s quite an accomplishment,” she said with a warm smile. “Do you miss it? Or do you still play for fun?”

“And what was the proudest day of your life then?”
