The shuttle had been prepped by Engineering and modified for the specifications provided. There were a few Engineering NE’s milling about, making the final preparations. There was a note that Sickbay would be bringing additional supplies for the mission, which hadn’t been delivered yet.

Asimina arrived a few minutes later, box and med kit in tow. The box contained the adjusted rebreathers, and the med kit contained the hypos that Dr. Knight had prepared (OOC: I don’t remember why we did that). Hannah pulled out the tricorder and waited for the away team. She would fine tune each rebreather for the individual user before they boarded the shuttle. She had not been told yet which of the medical staff would be accompanying the team.

DaVinci stepped into the shuttle bay and smiled seeing Hannah standing by. “Come by to see me off or just checking to make sure I’ll be coming back.” He grinned and looked around the bay. Seeing no one but the tech crew milling about, he grabbed her hand and pulled Hannah into the shuttle with him.

Hannah smiled when she saw him walk in. Though she wasn’t surprised he was going, she couldn’t say she was thrilled. His words hit home just a little too closely. As he pulled her into the shuttle she was scanning him with the tricorder. “I thought you were here to wish me luck.” Her orders came just before he arrived. She would be going on the away team.

He gave her a quick kiss and added, “I’m coming back. I promise!! I didn’t find you again, just to disappear.”

She returned the kiss, and then glanced out the entrance to see if any of the tech crew was watching. Taking a deep breath to stave off the blush. “I know. Now hold still.” She finished the scan and then made an adjustment to the rebreather. “This is calibrated specifically for you don’t loose it. It will regulate the air from the high oxygen atmosphere.”

He gave her another kiss, this one lingering a bitter longer and then slid into the pilot’s seat and began the pre-flight check.

Hannah blinked and took a deep breath. She needed to focus, and not on the way he kissed her. She stepped out of the shuttle and returned with the box of rebreathers and the med kits. “Of course you’re coming back because this time, I’m going with you.” She turned the tricorder on herself, took the readings and adjusted her own rebreather and then tucked it into her med kit. She would repeat the process for each member of the away team as they arrived.

DaVinci raised an eyebrow in surprise. “You’re coming along? How sweet. Our first Away Team together. But I do have to warn you, Hannah. I sometimes have to take chances and do things that are kind of. . . risky. That’s part of my job and I’m good at it. I haven’t survived this long on just my good looks, charm, and luck. . . . “

Hannah nodded, “I know. I have no delusions about your job. Don’t worry about me. I know my job. I’m a certified search and rescue team leader and an expert in emergency medicine and triage.” It hurt that he felt she needed to be ‘educated’ on their job. He was the Cmdr, she was just the jr Lt doctor. But she was damn good at her job. But 5 years was a long time, she was fresh out of the Academy then, not so now. He had years of experience on her, but she wasn’t stupid. She wanted to give him back the same attitude he’d given her, or maybe it was just both their nerves doing the talking. Instead she spoke, calmly and matter-of-fact. “No matter what I might want, if you get hurt, you may not be the medical priority. Just like you may have to order me to do something you don’t like.” Just because they had personal preferences didn’t mean it would interfere with their jobs. And she would not disappoint him by begging him to not do his job. People were in trouble down there and they were supposed to help them. “I understand Cmdr if you think I am not the right person to go. You can ask Dr Knight for someone else.” She caught his eye, whatever his decision, she would respect it. She turned, tricorder in hand at the sound of the two approaching officers.

A moment later, Sha and another security officer walked into the bay. Stepping into the craft, she glanced at the two. “I hope I am not intruding. We have come to lend aid and protection. Where do you want us?” She smiled though it looked more like a leer. Hazard of head ridges, no matter how subtle.

Hannah smiled and spoke clearly so her accent wouldn’t cause any misunderstandings. She wasn’t sure where Daniel, nope Cmdr Colton would want them, “For right now if you two could stand right here for me. I just need to take some scans of both of you. Normal breaths please.” Hannah scanned their respiration and blood oxygen levels picked up two rebreathers, made some fine tuning adjustments and handed them to Lt Sha and the NE security officer. “These will help negate the effects of the high oxygen atmosphere. These are calibrated specifically for your body’s respiration needs. We have others, but these will be best.”

“Lt. Triton, Dr. Asima, once you get your gear stored and the rebreathers calibrated, strap yourselves in. We’re just waiting for Lt. Cmdr. Sinclair to finish up this road trip.’

Colter (CIO)

“I’m here, I’m here. Had to grab a few things before I left.” a deep Scottish brogue said form just outside the craft, and soon the big Scot came in carrying a black backpack on one shoulder.

Asimina took out one more rebreather and then stored the rest inside the med kit, or as many as would fit, and stowed the rest of the gear. As soon as Sinclair arrived, she’d take the scans she needed and calibrate his rebreather. Other than the scan she could do the rest strapped into her seat.

The shuttle ride to the planet was rather turbulent, but as they got closer to the planet’s surface, the interference and turbulence cleared considerably. As they broke through the clouds, the planet came into view.

The terrain was rocky, desert-like, a sea of brown and grey. Several mountain ranges jutted out from the earth, and there were no large bodies of water in few from their vantage point.

Sensors were able to pinpoint the location of the transmission signal. It was coming from approximately 1000 meters below the surface. As they continued their descent towards the signal, the atmosphere of the planet appeared to be changing slightly. The closer they got to the surface, the more the air resembled a more breathable atmosphere.

Hannah pulled up the sensor readings on the console next to her seat. If the air was more breathable, they may not need the rebreathers, or she made need to adjust them. If the atmosphere was radically different from their initial scans they would be adjusted properly and she would need to fix the before they left the shuttle. While she waited she considered how deep underground the signal was located. She hoped there was an easy way down. If not that meant climbing and she didn’t see any climbing equipment. 1000 meters down was a long way to free climb for someone inexperienced. She could do it, but she didn’t know if anyone else on the team could.

Sinclair watched the readings from behind the doctor and tapped her shoulder. “Will we need supplemental respiration with those readings?” he asked. He was a doctor himself, but his medical training was only slightly more than base-line for a medical professional.
