Brenna’s first stop was her quarters. Why? Well she wasn’t sure how her new command team would feel about her boys following her onto the bridge. They were working dogs, and they would be seen frequently around the ship with her, but better to see what the limits were first. She entered the area and Fekri went right to the replicator and barked 3 times but nothing happened, which left the dog confused. “I’ll have to set up the programming boy. For now you’ll have to wait for me.” Brenna ordered a very large bowl of water and three bowls of food and set them down on the floor. She did a quick walk through of the rooms looking for anything suspicious. Brenna was just a bit over cautious. She heard the whine of a transporter and walked to the connecting doorway and watched her trunks appear. “Alright boys, I gotta work. Geri.” The black and white husky looked up at her, “Find.” The dog started pacing around the room, nose touching everything. Then she left heading to deck 2.

She took the long way around deck 3 to get a feel for it. She’d done her research and had read up on Cmdr Daniel ‘Da’Vinci’ Colter. Interesting story there, and he had a background in Intel as well. This was going to be interesting. A small smile flickered across Brenna’s face as she stepped into the lift. “Deck 2.” The lift took off and stopped one deck up. She made her way down the corridor. The gold of her uniform reflecting back at her in the reflective surface of the computer interfaces. Reaching the XO office she pressed the chime. No she didn’t ask the computer if he was there. If he wasn’t, that meant she got to go looking, and that was always fun.

Lt Cmdr Atoded, CoS

“Come,” came a gravelly voice from inside the room. As the doors slid open, the linebacker sized XO/CIO stood and extended his right hand.

“Lt. Cmdr. Atoded, I’m Cmdr. Colter, the Saracen’s Exec and Chief of Intel. Welcome aboard.”

Breena took his hand and shook it. Some how she managed to make it feel more like equals than the fact his hand positively dwarfed hers. Her grip was firm and confident. “Thank you, Cmdr Colter. I’m excited to be here.” And Breena was. She’d learned a long time ago if you weren’t excited about the assignment, you’d be waiting till the end of eternity to find joy in something.

DaVinci indicated to Atoded to take a seat as he sat back down behind his desk. After getting comfortable, he got right to the point. “Our new security chief has some Intel work in her background, too. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think Command was setting us for some classified ops of our own. You wouldn’t have any inside poop on that would you?”

Colter (CO/CIO)

Breena sat down in the offered chair and grinned, “It seems that way doesn’t it. So I can tell you I finished my last assignment and between then and getting orders to come here, I was informed that members of a task force I was in…am in,” Hmmm was it being disbanded, at least for now it was, “are being targeted. So they are attempting to tuck me quietly out of the way. As for classified ops for the Saracen, I haven’t heard and I did look, but we both know it’s a huge possibility.” She shrugged, it was part of the job. “That does bring me to something else I discovered on the way here. You are expected a new Chief Tactical Officer. One Richard Marsh. My last posting was the Constellation and he was the XO. He left 6 weeks before I did, assigned to another ship. I can’t say it doesn’t raise red flags to me that he’s suddenly been assigned to the Saracen as well.”

Atoded, CoS

“Now you’ve got my curiosity piqued,” DaVinci replied as he began to bring up Marh’s file. “Let me guess, he’s got some backgrounf in Intel as well?”

Colter (XO/CIO)

Brenna had checked when she’d gotten the assignment and Colter had a high enough security clearance she could tell him about almost every op she’d ever done. It made it easy to speak freely. Not that anything they were discussing fell under need-to-know or classified. It was refreshing in a way though. She shook her head, “Actually no, his back ground is Tactical and Command. Well, to be more specific if he is, it’s buried deep. I checked and couldn’t find anything. Richard and I were in the same co-op at the Academy our Freshman year. We dated until graduation. The day after I was pulled for a special assignment. I hadn’t spoken to him again until the day he boarded the Constellation. He was eager to resume our acquaintance.” Brenna wasn’t ashamed of it, it was a typical situation that many officers found themselves in. “I did a background on him then of course and nothing flagged. Like I said he left for his next XO assignment 6 weeks before I left the Connie. I wasn’t reassigned right away. But what is making the hair on my neck raise is that as soon as I got orders, he got a transfer to Saracen as well. Now given I know someone is going after a task force I was in, it seems strange. I didn’t find anything but that isn’t always fool proof. There is always someone better at the game out there. Or the other two possibilities are that Richard Marsh has turned into a creepy stalker, or it’s just pure coincidence.”

Atoded, CoS

DaVinci first put on his XO’s hat and asked, “Just for the sake of argument, let’s say he did follow you here to pursue your relationship, how do you feel about that? Is that going to be a problem for you, whether you have the same inclinations or not?”

Brenna appreciated the question and concern, but shook her head, “No Cmdr it won’t be a problem if that’s the case. We work quite well together, or at least we always have. On the personal side of things, honestly…that will take me some time to wrap my head around. I suppose I should be flattered.” Atoded help her hands palm up and shrugged. It was really only a problem if Richard had become an unknowing pawn in some scheme. She would have to deal with that later, and hope she’d been sent far enough away to a “dull” enough post that no one wanted to come after her.

And now to put the CIO hat back on. “Tell me about this task force you say is being targeted. My clearance is high enough that I can find it if I need to, but I’d rather hear it coming straight from you.”

Colter (XO/CIO)

Brenna smirked, “You’d think that, but it’s debatable.” Brenna pulled an item out of her pocket, Colter would be familiar with it. A small palmed sized pyramid that she set on his desk. Standard equipment for scrambling listening and recording devices. She pressed the sides in sequence and the small device lit up and pulsed softly. “As you know every power, great or small, has their own intelligence agencies and then levels of skill, power, and freedom to operate. In the Federation we have SFI which you and I work for, but at times seems to be controlled or at least used and manipulated by Section 31. But Section 31 doesn’t really answer to anyone, there is no strong oversite. It’s similar everywhere.”

“Several years before I joined the academy, sometime between the Borg and the Dominion War members of some of the big intelligence groups somehow ended up in a room together. Well as the story was told to us, they started swapping stories. Pride and Ego mostly just enough truth to not give away what they were really doing. But as the stories went on, they started to notice just enough similarities to know something was not quite right. There were leaks in each, but where or to whom they were leaking information was elusive.”

“Fast forward to now, the task force is comprised of members of Section 31, Klingon Intelligence and Order of Kahless, the 3rd Andorian Battalion, the Romulan Tal Shiar, the Cardassian Obsidian Order, Bajoran Intelligence, Idanian Intelligence, the Vulcan V’Shar, the 3rd Andorian Battalion to name a few. Our job is simply to listen and report, to work together to make sure our individual governments stay that way and to plug the leaks. We report to our COs as it were and they report directly to a committee. In the last year alone four of us have either disappeared or become nearly so.”

Atoded, CoS

DaVinci almost choked on the water he had taken a drink of. During the time he was “gone” and under deep cover, his job had been to eliminate possible leaks within Starfleet Intelligence. He had been give target dossiers and was expected to do the job with no questions asked. That had been the mission that had constantly kept him away from Hannah for those 5 years. Coincidence?? Had Atoded’s name been on the list and he had just not gotten to it before he was compromised and pulled off the job?

If she was on the list, either his replacement had that far yet, or the mission was scrubbed prior to her name. This could complicate matters on the Saracen if his old handlers were aware of the situation. Then again, maybe she was cleared and removed from the list. That would be the best case scenario.

He needed to know if the names on his list and her team coincided. “are you able or willing to share the names of your team that Have been disposed of? That could help determine if there are still parties after you or the surviving members of your team.”
