The thought of that made Sheleah smile. Rex had the manners of a teenager sometimes but loved to play and knew when to keep his claws to himself.

“Did you have pets growing up?” she asked.

Brenna nodded, “Betazoid cats. Several, all the time. My mom bred them. And then we had a dog, a beagle from Earth. My dad visited there and fell in love with it and brought one home.”

Sheleah couldn’t help but laugh at that.

“In my experience, Beagles are terrible. If you don’t have the right temperament to train them, I think they’re too smart for their own good. My daddy brought one back from I don’t know where. We had it 6 months before my mother convinced him that we might not be the right family for it. Of course you probably had a different experience.”

“Oh my dad loved him, spent hours working with him, training him, he was a really good dog. A lot of energy, and every once in a while he’d get the urge to howl non-stop. And he always gave me away when I was listening where I shouldn’t be. That’s when I found out I had a knack with animals. I learned how to keep him calm, or happy anyway. My dad always wanted a pack of them, so he could listen to them sing together. My mother said no.” Brenna grinned, “Luckily I have huskies they don’t like to howl together.”

Sheleah remembered several arguments over the beagle Colin had brought back but they were just masking the real argument and her parents divorced soon after the beagle went to the family next door.

“Wow, a pack of singing beagles… Yikes. I don’t think I, personally, could have handled that but I’ve always known huskys to sing. Rex just purrs. Very soothing” she said.

“Mine do howl, but not often. Usually only when they get to be planet side or they see Ch’otok. The man who helped me train them.” Brenna grinned, “One thing I have learned about animals, is that choosing the right one, is as personal as choosing your best friend or significant other. There is no ‘one size fits all’ pet.”

Sheleah gave the other woman a look. Brenna had no idea how truthful her words were.

“Are you sure you weren’t a counselor in a past life?” she asked with a laugh.

  • Sheleah, CNS/DO

“I have filled that position a few times over the years. But my last posting I was in charge of a field test of a program that required every member of the crew to have a pet. I raised, trained, matched, and cared for all the animals. It’s why my dogs have some much experience with different animals.” In ways Brenna missed it, and arranging to have those animals transferred along with their crew had been a logistical nightmare. But at least command hadn’t scrapped the program completely when her mission was over.

Atoded, CoS

“I’m going to have to read up on that mission sometime. I’m guessing it was a rousing success? Other than that, I find you fit for duty. I’d like to see you back in six weeks just to touch base and make certain you’re adjusting to life on the Saracen.” Sheleah said as she finished the review and passed the PaDD across the table.
