The jefferies tubes were always a quiet place to work, free of distractions. Siarram liked when there was something he could repair from in there. He was in one of the horizontal tunnels, sitting on the floor by an access panel, just finishing up a repair. It had been an easy time lately, no urgent things needing work. Instead he was getting things done on the “When Engineering has time for this” list. It made for a nice, relaxing day. He closed up the access panel, finished with this particular job, and then checked his PaDD to see what else was on the to-do list.

Hannah had some down time to herself, Daniel.was busy doing XO things, and she was bored sitting in their quarters. The holodeck we’re free, but she just wanted to move. So taking a small knapsack she was moving through the Jefferies tubes, climbing the ladders. No destination in mind, just climbing for the exercise. It wasn’t as challenging as Rick climbing but it would do. For the moment. She also was planning on keeping her search and rescue certifications so she needed to know her way around the ship.

Heading towards one of the ladders, Siarram looked before descending, and he was glad he did because up came another officer. Someone he recognized, even. “Doctor… Asimina, wasn’t it? What are you doing in here?” He meant it as a curious question, and he was smiling as he spoke. She didn’t look like she was rushing anywhere, and he had a little time to spare.

It was the movement of air above her that made her look up. Her combadge started a patterned beeping as he spoke and she reached quickly with one hand and adjusted something on her implant. “Lt Ch’Thaanaq.” She grimaced internally over the way his name sounded so botched in her voice even though she was very careful in pronouncing it. She hurried up the ladder and moved off to the side and grinned. “Oh well I’m an avid rock climber, but I got tired of the holodeck programs, so thought I would do some climbing around the ship. I checked first, I must have missed there was work in this section. I’m very sorry.”

“Siarram is fine,” he said, offering another smile. And easier to pronounce, he added in his head, though he was used to humans having difficulty with it. “Nothing major, you’re not in the way. Climb all you like.” Siarram didn’t see the point in rock climbing, though perhaps that was his logical side talking. Rock climbing was unecessarily dangerous for a way to exercise in his mind.

Hannah turned a little pink. She knew the look, when people were ‘kind’ because of her disability. She inhaled through her nose and then out her mouth. As always she spoke slowly and made sure to enunciate clearly. “I’m sorry Lt. I didn’t mean to offend. I didn’t hear my first sound until I was 8. It was another year and half until I could speak basic words.” She pointed at one of her implants. “I hear all the nuances in language now, but I can not always form them with my voice.”

Siarram looked a bit confused as Hannah started sharing about her disability. Then he understood, she thought he was offended she couldn’t pronounce Ch’Thaanaq. “That’s alright. Even humans who don’t have trouble hearing can’t always pronounce my Andorian name very well. I’d be happy to teach you the finer points of Andorian, sometime.” Siarram was fluent in the traditional languages of both his heritages.

“I love learning new languages. Well learning about them. I can usually read and write okay, but verbal fluency is a bit or miss.” In the process her hands moved. One might think she had overly expressive body language but she was actually signing while talking.

Siarram nodded. “Andorian has a lot of different dialects, because of its clans, but the written language is always the same. Its letters are nothing like the letters from the earth languages.” Well, they were a little similar to Earth Japanese or Chinese, but Siarram had little exposure to those languages.

“Written languages fascinate me. How a specific shape came to represent the sound of a letter or a whole word. Much like how specific hand gestures came to represent specific words in sign language.” Hannah waved her hands in a back and forth twisting motion just to draw attention to them, indicating what she had been doing while they spoke.

She smiled her thanks. “Thank you. I’m also on the rapid response and search and rescue teams. Reading a map and using it to navigate in an emergency isn’t quite the same as being familiar with the Jefferies tubes.”

Siarram nodded. “Oftentimes those maps, while accurate, don’t quite capture the intricacies of the tubes. I’ve seen too many take a wrong turn, trying to follow the maps, and get all turned around. You like to be prepared in case of an emergency, don’t you? A logical decision.” He commented, remembering this was the doctor who had insisted on attempting to replicate his blood in case there was ever an emergency in which it was needed.

“I do. It cuts down reaction time and if someone is hurt or lost, being familiar with the area can reduce critical minutes until help arrives.” Hannah grinned, “It’s good exercise too. How are you settling in?”

Asimina, med

He smiled, “I’d want you on the team if I ever find myself hurt.” Then he shrugged. “It’s been busy.” Really, Siarram was just a bit of a workaholic, though he tried not to be. “I’m starting to have more time for hobbies, now that I’ve had time to settle in and get to know the rest of the Engineering staff.”

Her right fingertips touched her chin and moved outwards, “Thank you.” Hannah didn’t know if he was saying that just to be polite but she would take the compliment. “Saracen always seems to stay busy.” Her first day aboard had been a whirlwind. They had traveled through a rip in space-time and there had been a lot of casualties. She hadn’t even been checked in before she was put to work. “What types of hobbies do you enjoy, Siarram?”
