Sheleah debated on going back to her quarters for a quick nap or completing her check in. She decided it would be best to just get it all over with.

=^=Commander Colter. Do you have a minute to complete my check in? I’m your new counselor and I would really like to get to work.=^=

  • Sheleah, CNS/DO

DaVinci’s gravelly voice replied. =^=Of course, Lt. I’ve got some time for you right now. I’m in my office on Deck 2 and look forward to meeting you.=^=

Colter (XO/CIO)

Sheleah stopped by her quarters, freshened up, fed Rex, and was at Commander Colter’s office in ten minutes. It was true, she could have gone straight for the Captain but, after meeting Doctor Knight, she wanted to get a little emotional distance before meeting Captain Knight.

Waving at a passing ensign she smiled and rang the chime.

  • Sheleah, CNS/DO

“Come on in,” replied the gravelly voice from inside the room.

The door slid open and DaVinci Colter stood from behind his desk to greet the new counselor. The XO/CIO stood almost a foot taller and a solid 110 pounds heaver. Despite his size, he moved with a smooth, casual grace.

DaVinci extended his right and and said “Welcome to the Saracen, Lt. I’m Cmdr. Colter, ships Exec and Chief of Intel. Please, have a seat.”

After the handshake, DaVinci moved back behind his desk and to the replicator. “Can I offer you something to drink before we begin?”

Colter (XO/CIO)

Sheleah stepped in, looked up, and shook his hand.

“Coffee. Dark roast with cream. So, Intel as well as XO… This should be interesting. Thank you for sparing a minute Commander.” she said slipping into the offered seat.

  • Sheleah, CNS/DO

DaVinci ordered her coffee and replied while waiting. “Not a problem, Lt. I’m happy to get this out of the way, so that you can start your work. We’ve been without a counselor for too long.”

With a full cup of steaming coffee, the XO turned and set the cup on front of Ruby. “During my time in the Army Rangers and Delta Force, I was to and developed a particular set of skills that came in very handy in the Intel field, so it was only natural to continue my career in that department. When my predecessor moved on, Capt. Knight figured I’d make a good XO, as well. Since my time on the Saracen, we’ve come to realize we make a pretty good team.”

“But enough about me, I need to know about you. Tell me, who is Sheleah Ruby, counselor AND diplomatic office?”

Colter (XO/CIO)

Sheleah picked up the coffee and took a long drink. She would really need to stop after this. Between here and sickbay she was almost at her caffeine limit for the day.

“Well, I’m the only child of a JAG officer and a minor diplomat. I learned early on that life is a negotiation so I guess I sought out a career that would go with that strength but, for lack of a better word, my heart always got in the way. So that’s when somebody suggested counseling. That’s usually a really good fit for me and then my adventurous side pops up which you can blame on my daddy.”

  • Sheleah, CNS/DO

“I’ve always thought that counseling and diplomatic services went hand-in-hand. Both jobs deal with persuasion and negotiations. I’m really surprised there aren’t more people in the fleet that specialize in both roles. If you could only do one or the other, what would you choose?”

Colter (XO/CIO)

Sheleah leaned forward and set her empty cup down.

“For the rest of my life or can I negotiate a five year rotation on that?” she asked with a mischievous smile.

“I’m actually surprised no-one’s ever thought to ask me anything like that before so I’m not certain I have an answer for you. You see, counseling has to do with one person or a small group of people if you’re running group therapy. Diplomacy is kind of super sizing that so sometimes they can be like the same job.” she explained.
