“Well you can always train an animal to work with you. Our CMO had a Capuchin Monkey that was trained to retrieve non-sensitive equipment and entertain scared patients. Our CE was Keb, if you haven’t met one they are very very short, he had a Savannah cat that was trained to get into the racks and retrieve things out of his reach. I even saw the cat once let him use her like a step stool. And my boys of course help with security.” Brenna pet the smallest one that hadn’t made any effort to leave her side. “I will admit I miss all the animals.”

Atoded, CoS

Hannah bit her cheek to keep from laughing. “I can NOT imagine the chief allowing animals in sickbay.”

Brenna nodded, “Yes there was quite a stir when I brought the boys in for their medical check. Had to do their exam they in the waiting area. Lieutenant Do’trahk threatened to eat them.”

Hannah grinned, “He’s all bark and no bite. Don’t mind him. He wouldn’t hurt these guys.” At least she hoped he wouldn’t.

Asimina, med

Siarram was now imagining one of these animals fetching his tools for him while he was fixing something or other. He wasn’t sure what a capuchin monkey was, but he did (vaguely) know what cats were. He knew humans evolved from animals called apes. He wondered if a capuchin monkey was like those. “I can’t imagine animals in Sickbay, either… At least not regularly. Doesn’t that sort of environment need to be sterile? But I also can’t imagine eating your dogs.”

“Well really it wouldn’t be that bad, everything that goes through any entrance to sickbay passes the decontamination fields, so they would be clean. And if they were very sick, even as an ‘animal’, they would be put in an isolation room. So sickbay would stay sterile. Just because they are hairy or scaly or have feathers doesn’t mean they are inherently dirty.” Hannah ruffled Freki’s ears and fur and stuck her face right next to his, “You are too handsome to try and eat. What a horrible thing to suggest. I bet you like to pretend you can fit in laps and get on the couch every chance you get.”

Brenna laughed, “Almost. Freki does love his attention, but he likes his space, so if the other two are on the couch he won’t get up.” Turning to Siarram, “It is as Dr Asimina says, the decontamination fields take care of most of it, but the Constellation had a refit to take care of such things because of the extensive nature of the study. In fact, though, it is standard procedure to have all living creatures checked by medical staff. From animals studied in science labs to pets. Each Chief Medical Officer handles the how of the procedures differently.”

Asimina and Atoded

Siarram nodded. “So the uncleanliness of animals is handled by the sickbay’s decontamination fields. That makes sense.” He was now sitting on the floor with Fenris, still scratching his head. “You’ll have to show me those studies of the effects of pets on the crew’s wellbeing.”

Brenna nodded, hiding a grin as the CE ended up on the floor with the dog. “I would be happy to share the preliminary data. With the Connie being decommissioned we didn’t get to finish the study. But it was based on some older research I can share as well.”

Atoded, CoS

Siarram nodded. “Whenever you have the time to serve it my way.” Then he looked at Fenris in bewilderment when the dog decided to lick him. “What did he do that for?”
