Jensen, for whatever reason, always felt the need to hold his breath during the transportation process; maybe he thought he’d materialize with his lungs flipped inside out if he did. Jay inhaled deeply once he was sure all of his atoms had materialized in the correct place and grabbed his duffel bag. He was the first Cadet in a while to be assigned to a front-line starship, instead of a behind-the-scenes ship fully staffed by cadets. Jenson knew all eyes would be on him to decide if the approach would be a success or failure.

“Cadet Jensen Truhart, Helmsman.” Jay said, handing his orders over to the transporter operator. To say he was nervous would be an understatement, but Truhart learned a long time ago how to perfectly wear a fake smile. Jay watched as the operator quickly looked over his orders, then retrieved them once they were confirmed. “Thank you, Petty Officer,” Truhart said as he flung the duffel bag over his shoulder. Putting his PaDD in the back pocket, the Cadet headed out into the corridor. He had all of the usual symptoms of a new situation running through his head; nervousness, excitement, and self-doubt. Jay stopped momentarily to gather his composure, then continued off to the turbolift, ensuring he wore a smile along the way.

“Deck 2, as close to the XO’s office as possible,” Jensen said after the turbolift doors closed behind him. He gave the computer a more in-depth location so he have to find himself lost on his first day. The destination was only a few decks above him, so it only took several seconds for the humming to stop and the doors to open. Cadet Truhart shifted the weight of his bag as he stepped out into the corridor. To his surprise, the XO’s office was a few meters down from the turbolift. Jensen felt a tad awkward dragging his bag with him, but since the XO assigned the quarters there was no place to store it.

Jay smiled and nodded at an officer passing by as he approached the XO’s office. “This is it,” He said, then pressed the chime.

Cadet Truhart

DaVinci approached his office to see a young man standing outside his the door. “You must be Cadet Truhart. Welcome aboard the USS Saracen, cadet. I’m Cmdr. Colter, ships XO and Chief of Intel.”

At more than six feet and a solid 230 lbs., many of the Saracen’s crew described the XO as the perfect example of a Roman gladiator, and with his experience in the US military’s Delta Force, the description was more than appropriate

Jay turned at the sound of his name being called and spotted the ship’s XO approaching him. Certainly a meathead by his standards, but Jensen was working on not assuming one’s capabilities and personality based on their looks. Though, I’m sure he’d stick out like a sore thumb if he was ever needed on Tellarite.

The XO stopped a passing crewman in the corridor and said to the man, “Please take the cadet’s belonging’s to his quarters while he and I have a chat.” He asked for the cadet’s PADD and typed in a few commands. “This is his cabin. Deck 12, Cabin 4C. As a cadet, you’ll be in the enlisted quarters, Mt. Truhart. Hopefully, you don’t have a problem with room mates.

“Please to meet you, Commander. ” Truhart said, handing his bag over to the crewman. While not ideal, Jay didn’t want to fret too much about sharing quarters with two other crew members. He was used to doing so back at the Academy and found them a tad above tolerable.

As the two entered the office, DaVinci said to the newest member of the crew, “Alright cadet, The Saracen doesn’t usually take on cadets as members of the crew. Impress me and tell me why you deserve to be here.”

“Well…,” Cadet Truhart replied as he took a seat in front of the desk, “I didn’t have much of a choice.” He added. “My name was chosen at random and my original assignment was the USS Atlantis, but since she’s been presumed lost they sent me here, ” Jensen said shrugging his shoulders. While it wasn’t his choice to be a part of the program, the Cadet was expected to jump at every opportunity to build connections with the officers.

DaVinci pulled up the cadet’s Academy file on his computer and was silent for a few moments while scanning the files. “Flight Control, huh? Tell me this, what makes you think you’re good enough to fly a battleship. This battle ship, in particular. The Saracen is the cream of the crop. I know you said you were chosen randomly, but I want to know why YOU think you’re good enough.”

“I also hope you understand that this isn’t your normal cadet cruise. This is the real deal. There is no reset button to let you start a scenario all over. The crews lives are in your hands and depends on how quickly you can respond to Captain Knight’s or my orders on the bridge. There will be a great amount of pressure on you.”

Cream of the crop....? Jensen thought to himself. The Cadet could beg the differ and offer up a name such as the USS Wolverine who could fit the bill, but Jay thought it would have come across as insulting. Relaxing a bit in his chair, Cadet Truhart thought for a moment before he spoke.

OOC: LOL!!! Good answer!!!

“For starters, Commander,” The Cadet Helmsman began, “I’m one of the top in my class who not only excelled in academia but in social awareness as well.” Jensen couldn’t put a number on the amount of times he had come across a very intelligent officer, only to find that they lacked the common sense or social skills to ever beak into command. “We all make mistakes, Commander, but I’m quick to acknowledge, correct, and learn from them.” Truhart noticed a speck of dust falling from the corner of the office which caught his attention for a moment. The Cadet knew he didn’t have to prove his worthiness of being on the Saracen. That part was already made up when Starfleet Command placed him on the ship. Of course, Jensen would need to work his butt off to meet the expectations in order to stay on the ship.

DaVinci continued to sit quietly and contemplate the cadets reply. Finally breaking the awkward silence, he replied. “You’re right. We all do make mistakes. The important thing is that we DO learn from them and that those mistakes don’t result in any loss of life.”

Cadet Truhart nodded in return. Surely, Starfleet has overlooked a few mistakes that ended in people dead, but that was neither here nor there.

“I’m going to talk to your surpior, the Chief Flight Officer and have him schedule for bridge duty when I’m there as well. That will allow me to personally assess your skills and offer suggestions. I hope you’re good with constructive criticism, because that is exactly what I’ll be offering you both verbally and in my reports. It is in no way meant to demean your skills and abilities, but an attempt to make them and you an even better helmsman.”

“I’m sure I’ll succeed, Commander,” Truhart said, standing up. Though, probably not wanting to make a career out of flight control, Jensen found that starship navigation was the first step to command.

The XO stood up and offered his right hand. “Welcome to the Saracen, Cadet Truhart. I lok forward to seeing what you’ve got.”

The Cadet extended his hand to return the shake. With a quick nod, Jay straightened out his uniform and disappeared into the corridor.
