His antenna were pressed almost flat against his head as Kyrith materialized on the transporter pad. He would never get used to that sensation, no matter how many times he transported around. He reached up and touched the vial of Eran’s blood, quietly muttering a few words. He stepped down off the pad with a nod to the transporter operator, and quietly exited the room. Emerging into the corridor, he brought up a map on his PaDD.

As he walked, his antenna slowly rose, angling in two separate directions as did his curiosity. He had never been on such a wonderful Federation ship before, so this was his chance to detect and explore as much as he could. He should, however, watch where he’s going, as he found out upon running into the door of the Chief of Security’s office a few minutes later. Managing not to fall on his butt, he rang the chime.

Ensign Kyrith Th’zylen

Brenna was expecting a new officer to report today and she was currently sitting at her desk reading over his personnel file. Three canine heads lifted and barked as something hit the door. Geri let out a low rumble and Brenna tapped the security feed on the monitors. “Lu’” She gave them the command in Klingon and they seemingly went back to sleep. At the chime she called, “Come in Ensign Th’zylen.” She watched as he did so. “Come in, have a seat.”

Three dogs were curled up in the far corner and raised their heads as he came in. Siberian huskies, a black and white, a grey and white, and a brown and white. They sniffed the air, taking his scent and the settled back down.

Kyrith entered, his antennae sweeping around the room, his curiosity piqued. As he took a seat, he went back to keeping them pressed back close to his head, a method he used to protect himself from sensory inputs he wasn’t wanting. He’d taken to using that method in the last few years since Eran died.

Ensign Kyrith Th’zylen

Atoded leaned back in her chair, “Tell me what you bring to the security team, ensign.”

Kyrith eyed her for a moment, before speaking. “I’ve been in the Imperial Guard back on Andoria, so I’ve, unfortunately, seen combat.” His hand moved up and lightly touched the vial of blood around his neck. “However, I do not let my feelings or emotions cloud my judgement. I make myself ignore any familiarity I have with anyone i may need to deal with.”

Ensign Kyrith Th’zylen

Brenna noted the movement and that the vial was blood. A serious loss. “Noted. Now tell me what you bring to the security team. You were part of the Imperial Guard and passed,” she glanced at his file, “the security division requirements. You must have skills that are valuable to us as a team. What are they?”

Atoded, CoS

Kyrith was never good at these sort of questions, but he decided to just go with it. “Extensive hand-to-hand combat training from my time in the Imperial Guard, as well as some combat training I hope to never have to use. Some minor investigative experience i taught myself after my brother’s murder.”

Ensign Kyrith Th’zylen

Ah, the blood then. “My condolences, En.” Battle was one thing, murder was quite different. “What weapons are you certified with? Do you have any personal weapons? They need to be registered and checked with me.”

Atoded, CoS

“Phaser types 2 and 3 are my only currently recognized certifications. I’d like to put Ushaan-tor on there but Starfleet doesn’t recognize that as a certifiable weapon at this time.” He hated to take up the weapon, but it’s something he was trained for, so it’d be an option in the future. “No personal weapons at this time. Too many memories.”

Kyrith Th’zylen

“Well just because Star Fleet doesn’t issue it doesn’t mean it isn’t a valid weapon. What positions have you taken in your patrol groups? Any one in particular you think you are best suited for?”

Atoded, CoS

“I generally get stuck with either point in a patrol group of 3 or more, or, if it’s simply a pair, I get stuck with watching the rear. No one ever asks what I’d like to do so I don’t know what I’m really good at.” Kyrith hadn’t been the most social of cadets, so nobody had gotten to know him or what he was good at.

Kyrith Th’zylen

“Then we will rotate you through positions, but what would you like to do? Not just in a patrol group, but within the division.”

Atoded, CoS

“I served for some of my time in the Imperial Guard as the person in charge of weapons and their upkeep and maintenance. I did actually enjoy that for the short time I did it. Is there a similar role in Starfleet?” As he spoke about work-related stuff, he slowly relaxed and his antenna raised as he became more comfortable.

Kyrith Th’zylen

“Armory officer. Head officer is Lt Rico Vanhall. We have openings for extra armory officers. Vanhall is very good at what he does. We’ll go see him and see what thinks.” Atoded very much believed in giving her section heads a choice in filling their openings when possible. “Tell me Th’zylen, you left the Imperial Guard and joined Star Fleet, so what are your plans? What do you want for your career? Do you want to be a section chief, ship’s tactic officer, learn more about investigation? Do you want to simply serve quietly and efficiently?” All were valid answers. Not everyone wanted to lead and that was fine, some simply wanted to do well at what they did.

Atoded, CoS

“I want to just serve efficiently and do what I need to do. I have bad memories from my time in the Guard coupled with my brother’s murder. I want to get away from that as much as I can.” Kyrith said. “If becoming a section chief, tactical officer, or anything else happens, so be it.”

Kyrith Th’zylen

Atoded gave a brief nod, “Nothing wrong with that.” She stood and the dogs all lifted their heads, alert. “Pelos.” The dogs settled back down. “Come with me.” She led him out of her office and down the corridor. She entered her Security code and the doors to the armory opened. “Vanhall,” she spoke to the Lt in the room. “This is En Th’zylen. He has some previous experience with weapons and maintenance.”

Standing behind one of the nearby counters with most of a disassembled phaser rifle in front of him, Rico looked up. Above average height and carrying the noticeable bulk of muscle under his uniform tunic, he sported very short hair and a light, tidy stubble. Ice green eyes first rested on Atoded before flicking towards Th’zylen, then back to Atoded and one corner of his mouth curled upwards slightly. “Don’t all of us who live to be this age?” He quipped and then nodded at the newcomer. “Welcome to the Saracen. Little old to be an Ensign aren’t you? Ex-Imperial Guard then?”

Lt Vanhall

“Not many can spot it first time. Yes, former Imperial Guard.” Kyrith said, looking at the disassembled rifle. He was curious as to what was wrong with the weapon that required it to be torn down, considering Starfleet weapons were known to be quite reliable. “Left after they refused to listen to my evidence that my brother’s death wasn’t an Ushaan but instead murder.”

Kyrith Th’zylen

“I will leave you here with Lt Vanhall. Report back to me En after you get your physical and counseling evals.”Brenna gave Rico a nod to let her know what he thought later. She had an inspection to get to.
