A week had passed since the Saracen had left the site of the destruction of the Bhari, heading towards Meridian Station for a little R&R and resupply, as well as a crew rotation. In that time, Captain Knight and Commander Colter had gone over the events of the last mission and filed their reports and recommendations to Starfleet HQ.

All that was left, was the post-mission meeting with each departments staff. For this, Dante had decided to use the War Room adjacent to the Bridge. It was both more spacious and had a bigger view port than the Captains Ready Room, and, as one of its’ uses was as a Senior Officer briefing room, wasn’t used enough.

Sitting at the desk with the ever present cup of coffee in one hand, Dante awaited the arrival of some members of the Science team that had been summoned to this meeting, namely, the Chief Science Officer Lt Commander Teller Graham and Ensign Tobias Rax. Looking over at Colter as they waited, Dante dropped the cup from his lips for a moment.

“Hey we never actually managed to take that trip to Earth to visit your ranch. We need to actually do that some time.”

Captain Knight, CO

“Yeah, well, some things got in the way. . . . I was actually asking Hannah to. . . .never mind, she’s moved on”

DaVinci took a sip of his coffee and continued. “Whenever you’re ready, skip. Just say the word and I’ll let the staff know to get ready for some visitors.”

Tobias hadn’t anticipated being included in the science debrief directly with the Captain. As a junior officer, he had assumed that his reports and the department head’s debrief would suffice. The prospect of facing the Captain directly heightened his anxiety yet again, adding another layer of pressure to the situation.

Taking a deep breath to steady his nerves, Tobias approached the door and pressed the chime. He hoped fervently that he wasn’t the first to arrive, nor the last, allowing him to slip in and blend seamlessly into the proceedings.

The door opened almost the instant that Rax pressed the chime and inside, the faces of the two most senior Officers on the ships turned to look at him. In silence for a few seconds.

“Come in, Ensign, find a seat. Welcome to the Saracen by the way. I understand you arrived right before our trip into the Nebula.” With a motion of one hand, Dante waved to a seat. “Once we get cleared to depart from Meridian Station, I’ll look into whether we can drop by Earth for a bit to visit your Ranch.” Dante replied to Colter while waiting for Rax to find a seat.

“Still talking about the Wyoming trip,” Teller asked walking into the room and overhearing the conversation. “You know I am in but do we have a date this time?” His comment was jovial enough given that each time they had planned it work had been interrupted causing it to be postponed.

DaVinci groaned a bit at Teller’s comment.

“Yeah, that was my fault, Commander. I swear Starfleet Intelligence is keeping me away from Earth for a reason. I don’t know why, but it might have something to do with the fact that last time we were there, I replaced a warehouse of real beer, with replicated stuff..”

“See that is your problem. If you have come to a scientist,” he glanced around before touching his chest and making a Oh what that is me we are looking for expression on his face, “you would not have been caught. I am a wiz in chemistry and brewing is nothing but chemistry. We could have altered the formula just enough that it would have imitated flat beer and you would have gotten away with it.” The ribbing and banter were all light-hearted. Graham liked the XO. It was hard not to.

Tobias observed the interactions between the senior staff but did not contribute, he hadn’t really spoken to them in great details outside of a professional relationship.

“Would either of you like coffee?” Dante asked the new arrivals. “I think we had a bit of a tight time frame on that one, didn’t we?” He looked between the two senior officers. “Something about time travel and preventing future tech from being used in World War 3 on Earth, something like that wasn’t it? Plus we made a detour for that pizza you kept going on about, Commander.” Dante’s face lit up with remembrance for the last part.

Captain Knight, CO

Tobias nodded in agreement, appreciating the offer of coffee. He had developed a liking for it back in the Academy, especially during late nights working on assignments. “I wouldn’t mind having one,” he replied, intrigued by the story. However, he couldn’t help but wonder if getting pizza would violate several protocols related to time travel.

“It was worth it, wasn’t it, skipper? Admit it, it was the best damn pizza you ever had!!! As for the beer I replaced, I don’t think there was a lot of people at that time that could tell the difference. Synthahol, as we know it now had only been around since the early 1970’s. By leaving the replacement beer, I was actually doing the bar owners a favor by increasing their profits. You had to drink about 10 of the fake ones to match the equivalent of alcohol of one real beer. So that’s my logic and I’m sticking to it. Trust me, once you’ve had a real beer, the fake stuff just doesn’t cut it.”
