“No, Mama” he said to Allesandra Knight. “I came here to sit and talk with her, work it out. I wanted to. Unfortunately I found that Ashley isn’t ready to work it out with me, her focus is on her future, and who else she wants around her, not us. That’s fine Mama, that is her choice, hers. My choice is to do what makes me happy, be with who makes me happy, and who I make happy.” Dante looked out the door and thought of Natasha, she had never asked him to do something purely because it was how she wanted it even though she knew it wasn’t the best for him, never asked him to put himself second for anyone else, either outright or by intention. In fact she had always been there when he had finished course if he wanted to spend time with her and she was free, always thought of him when she had spare time. Dante could see, now, how much Nat had done for him, respected him and cared.

“Ash and I were in love, Mama. But things have changed for us, and it’s time to go.” Dante placed his hands on his mothers shoulders, leaned forward and kissed her on the cheek, just once. “I am done, Mama. No more. I am walking out and not coming back, I know you will come with me. Say goodbye to Ash if you like, wish her a fortunate future and let her know that I love her, I am just no longer in love with her.” With that, Dante turned and walked out the small shop.

“Dante Knight,” Allessandra yelled stepping out of the shop and looking up and down the street. “Dante,” she said spying her son half a block away and moving towards the campus. “Italians are known for expensive shoes and cursing. I have enough of the latter to make everyone stop on this street. The shoes, on the other hand, are not meant for running so slow down,” his mother said walking towards him.

Dante slowed to a stop then turned around, despite the circumstances he smiled at his mother. She was a woman of old ideals and little shame, if she wanted to curse and have everybody stop and take notice, he had no doubt that is exactly what she would have done. There was a seat nearby, one of those park bench types that had been placed for people to sit and wait, rest. Dante did that now, he took a seat and leaned forwards, elbows on his knees and hands clasped together ahead of him as he watched the traffic and breathed slowly.

Approaching her son Allesandra sighed and put her hands on her hips. “What’s her name?” The question was simple yet the weight of it hung in the air like a lead blanket. There was no animosity or judgment in her voice. Mrs. Knight spoke in a neutral tone only wanting the truth.

He glanced upwards at Allesandra and grinned. It was over with Ashley and the truth was, he was pretty sure that had Natasha not been in the picture, if they hadn’t of slept together, he might have made far more of an effort to fix things with Ashley after three years, nearly four, of their relationship. Ashley had been the woman he had wanted to marry, then things had become complicated as they do in every relationship at some point. It was just bad timing, or maybe perfect timing if the universe was putting its finger in, that Natasha had come along when she did. His mother wasn’t someone who didn’t see her son and the emotions he carried, she was intuitive, and read between the lines. It was why she was so successful in what she did.

“Her name is Natasha, mama,” he said quietly. “Natasha Ivanov Daye.” He looked up at her and patted the chair beside him for her to sit, then leaned back and turned to face her, placing one foot on his knee as he relaxed to tell his mother about her. “Don’t raise your eyebrow mama, yes, she is Russian, and has the most amazing accent and pair of green eyes I have ever seen. She is training as a Doctor, mama.”

“Is she worth losing the devil you know for the devil you don’t?” This was a common saying in their family. His elderly Aunts and Grandmothers at times would spit on the ground from some archaic superstition as if to punctuate the statement but Dante’s mother never had done this. “You spent a lot of years with Ashley. Everyone has problems. You spoke of the possibility of not serving with her for the past year but true to your nature,” she ran her fingers through his hair, “you always have a plan. So does any of this break up with Ashley come with a new life plan or a new amore della tua vita (love of your life)?” Allesandra had no idea which it was, to be honest. She just knew her son. He was intelligent, charming, determined, and headstrong. He would not throw away something without cause. The question was which one was it.

He took a deep breath, and looked skyward for a moment, then down again to Allesandra. “Yes, I have a plan. I do always have a plan don’t I?” He chuckled slightly, and continued, “Ashley wanted me with her on the Wellington. I know she wanted me there because she loved me, in her own way, but to be with her I had to lose what I have worked for, what I believed in, and she made that choice without talking to me about it. That isn’t the type of relationship I am going to be in, so I walked away. I’m staying at the Academy for a fifth year mama. I have been offered a course in Advanced Tactical, and a position as a senior assistant to the lecturers. That means I have been accepted as a candidate for the Command Mentorship Program, it will mean I can jump a few years ahead of where I would be if I was assigned to a ship as a Security Officer next year. I don’t want to spend the next ten years on the Wellington as Security, guarding boxes of emergency rations. I want to be on the Bridge, making the calls and doing what I know I can do best. So, my plan is to stay here.”

“And here, is Natasha.” He said, smiling at his mother again. “Natasha is worth losing the devil I know, mama. But I do know what I am getting myself into with her. That is of course, if she will have me.” The look he gave his mother let her know that he wasn’t expecting anything with Natasha no matter how he felt about her. He hadn’t broken up with Ashley on the expectation that Natasha would have him, he had broken up with Ashley because it was the right thing to do, for him and for Ash, and for Nat.

“I am going to be here for another year, Natasha has a few more years of the Academy to go mama. She is not my amore della tua vita, not yet. I’m not even sure that I love her, or her me. But I like her, deeply, and I know she likes me deeply as well. I want to explore that with her, and Nat has always been there for me, waited, told me I am a fool when I needed to be told and loved me as a friend when I needed to be loved. We slept together, mama. Once. Yesterday.” He left out the part about it being in the girls locker room on campus. “I had an argument with Ash, a big one about the Wellington. Passions ran high, Nat appeared and Ash had words with her, nasty words, and Nat and I left for a course. Nat told me I was a fool, that I was going to let Ash ruin my career just to be with her. She kissed me, I kissed her. You can guess the rest, it was wrong but I am telling you it wasn’t a mistake. We both knew what we were doing and we talked afterwards, honestly. So, that is it mama. I broke up with Ash, and I am going to stay at the Academy and work to getting those Command assignments. Natasha is here, and she is a reason, but not the only reason. I would like you to meet her, I think that much of her.
